Book:His Burning Obsession Published:2024-8-26

I couldn’t concentrate in class the whole day, as my mind drifted to what Lucas had said earlier.
I had expected him to give an explanation but he walked away, leaving me staring in astonishment.
What had happened to Lola?
Was he mistaking me for another person?
Oh God! What’s all this?
And even though I looked like the person he mentioned, does that give him guts to mistreat me anyhow.
I sighed restlessly and felt moody throughout the maths period and I was glad it was finally over.
Many questions were running through my head, I wanted to know who was this Lola of the person he mentioned, did he hate her so much as he did towards me… I needed answers but I dared not walk up to the devil himself and start asking him questions about it.
Everything was okay at least for a moment and each time I mistakenly glanced to the back, I would see the invidious and envious glares visible on Jenny’s face.
Lucas looked off guard, he didn’t look like someone whose mind was in the class.
He looked pale and remote.
The bell rang for the next period and Mr. Kent our geography teacher walked in.
I’ve always loved Geography subject since 3rd grade, it’s one of the coolest subjects that canvass about the natural features of the earth.
I’ve always loved traveling around the world and explore new places and environments, and I hope to get there someday.
Mr. Kent sounded a bit happy today as he discussed the depth of the seas.
We have an excursion we science final year students were going for but I don’t know which one it is.
I just pray we don’t have one at all because where is the money I would actually use to pay for the fees and I didn’t want mum to get disturbed and bothered due to the situation we are in.
I was lucky about my school education and that’s because I’m on scholarship.
That gave me the zeal to pick one of the best universities in America that will be sponsoring a scholarship, at least I might get lucky and save mum from less stress of looking for my school fees.
“Kids, there will be an excursion!” Mr. Kent announced jolting me out from my spacey.
I became distraught and fagged, as my peers and mates squealed and shouted happily.
They all except me have been waiting for this moment since we resumed our finals.
Why does it have to be that I get so unlucky most of the time and my wish doesn’t come true?
I stared in dismay at Mr. Kent wondering the kind of excursion we were going for.
“Where are we going, sir?” A girl asked happily as the whole class started a chattering noise.
“You all will be amazed about it,” Mr. Kent chuckled as he put on a little smirk on his face.
“We want to hear about it,” Susan squealed from where she was sitting and I had to roll my eyes.
“Silence!” Mr. Kent ordered making everyone go mute as we all anticipated what he was about to say.
My eyes stared glued to his lips like I could get a hint of what he was about to say.
“The Pacific ocean,” Mr. Kent dropped the bombshell as my eyes grew wide in terror.
Oh God!
Someone tell me it’s not a dream…
“Wow!” I heard someone say behind.
“That’s awesome,” Another person said and everyone started talking again.
They all agreed with it.
“Sir, is it only Science that’s going for this trip?” MG asked and Mr. Kent nodded.
I frowned in frustration, even if I had to go, meaning Beatrice won’t be my side because she’s in the business department.
“It’s going to be fun kids, There will be boat rides, snorkeling, Scuba dives, River cruises, kayaking, beaching, and so many others,” He explained.
“Wow, that’s cool!” Rolly spoke and the rest of the class concur.
This is getting crazy, what the hell are we supposed to be doing in the Pacific ocean?
“Sir, is it compulsory to go for the excursion?” I asked raising my palms for him to see and everyone snapped their head towards me.
“It’s compulsory, all students for this final year will have to attend any activities organized by the school, You don’t go for the excursion, your results become degraded, you all know the rules,” Mr. Kent disclosed and I bet my mouth dropped to the floor.
Why the hell would they have to degrade someone’s results because she isn’t interested in going for the excursion?
This school is just something…
Oh! I doubt about that school part having rules, where were the rules when I was bullied, assaulted, embarrassed and so many humiliating kinds of stuff done to me that I don’t want to remember them and not only me but to victims like me.
Where were the fucking rules then when I was always mortified?
They only care about themselves and their stupid reputation as a famous wealthy school.
I nodded and sat on my seat falling deep into my thoughts.
I cringe at the thought of snorkeling and scuba diving, I hated being in the waters, it creeps the hell out of me.
I remembered when I was little around the age of 7 and my dad was still alive, he took me and Lillian to the water park to have fun.
Well, it would be my first day swimming in the pool. I got in with Lillian and some other kids, I was given a floater since it was my first time, Dad excused himself to get something while the guard was on watch.
Lillian told me to remove the floater so she would be able to teach me out to swim, I watched her dive into the water and I felt like doing the same too, so I removed the floater as she said and tried to dive in as she held my hands.
She left my hands a few minutes and told me to get hold of myself and feel the water, she and her stupid mediation, I started creeping out as I nearly got myself drowned, other kids were telling me to calm down but it seems I couldn’t control my body in the water. and the next thing the guard drew me out from the pool.
After that day, I swore never to enter any pool or dream of swimming.
“Miss. Evans are you here with us?” Mr. Kent snapped me out of my past.
“Uhm! Yes… Yes… Of course, I’m here with you,” I blurted and everyone burst into laughter while Mr. Kent stared at me in shock.
What?
I didn’t do anything wrong… Did I?
So, what’s funny?
“What was my last statement?” He asked with narrow eyes and every pair of eyes in class was focused on me.
Totally Done…
“Ehm! Yo-You… Sa-Said! That…” I stammered staring around but everyone just kept mute and fixed their gaze on me.
Sorry, Mr. Kent but it seems I don’t have your answers, and there’s no way I wouldn’t get detention from Mr. Kent for trailing off in his class.
He hates that, especially when you can’t answer his questions, that’s why most students pray he doesn’t pick them when he asks questions and if he does, you need to provide an answer straight away.
So, a nasty thought came into my mind, I’m certainly going to create a drama for myself today.
“Yo-You sai–”
Then I clutched my chest hard pretending as if I was choking as I started coughing badly.
“Are you okay, Miss. Evans?” Mr. Kent asked as I noticed his tone change in a worried state.
“Yeah!” I coughed hard again pretending to fall as all I felt was to laugh.
Everyone was silent staring at me, like I’ve gone nuts, yes, I am cause I can’t waste my remaining precious time in a detention room.
Mr. Kent walked worriedly to me, as he held my hands while I avoided his gaze and started coughing the more.
“Miss. Evans try to seat down!” He said worriedly and I nodded.
“Wa-Water! I need water,” I gasped still holding my chest as I picked my bag.
I brought out my water bottle and opened it as I gulped in the water, while I tried to subdue the cough breathing deeply.
“Are you okay, Miss. Evans or you need to be taken to the school clinic?” Mr. Kent asked with a concerned look, and I tried to restrain my inner self from bursting out with laughter.
I should be an actress, I just pretended in front of him and everyone.
“No… No! I-I’m fine now, My throat just got irritated and droughty,” I said smiling wearily till he bought my lie.
He nodded and patted my shoulder before he walked to the front.
Wow! That was close…
“You’re to pay $2, 500 for the excursion and we’re using up to five days,” Mr. Kent disclosed and I became frozen to my seat.
The bell rang and everyone walked out of the class while I sat still on my seat.
I was lost in thought, $2, 500 that’s a whole shit of money and I don’t want mum to get bothered about it, cause she would look for every possible way to get the money for me and I don’t want that.
“Nice act, you framed up there,” Someone’s voice jolted and I glanced to see Lucas sitting on my table with an amused look as his lips curved up into a smile.
Gosh! He looked so handsome but I could see the sadness lacing that handsome face of his.
I averted my gaze away from his and looked around and noticed the class was empty, Just me and this psycho alone.
I packed my books and grabbed my bag as I tried to hurry out from the class.
I stood up planning to ignore him, but he caught my arm immediately and drew me to himself as I crashed on him, I almost fell but he was quick to wrap his hands around my waist holding me placing.
I felt my cheek burning up as I looked up at him with a flushed face.
“So, were you trying to ignore me, little sparrow?” He asked tugging strands of hair behind my ear and I inhaled sharply staring intensely at his green eyes.
“Yeah… I mean N-No!” I stammered dumbly.
He didn’t say anything but just grazed his fingers on my cheeks as my body shuddered, his gaze shifted to my lips and my breath hitched.
He leaned closer and I tried to withdraw away from him thinking someone could walk in on us and found us in this awkward position.
“Uhm! I need to go,” I said biting my bottom lips furiously.
“You looked worried earlier, what’s wrong?” He asked taken me aback as he brushed his thumb on my lips.
“Nothing,” I said shifting my gaze away from him.
“About what I said in the hall–”
“Woah! Woah! What I’m seeing here?” Leticia one of the girls in my class interrupted as I withdrew away from Lucas immediately, he tried to tighten his grip but I succeeded in freeing myself from him.
“You saw nothing,” I gasped and glanced at Lucas who wore a hurtful expression as he stood up and walked away.
What the hell is wrong with him?
“Don’t mind me from being nosy, I just wanted to grab my book,” She said.
“No, there’s nothing between us,” I breathed out as she gazed at me for a while.
“You may not notice, but I think Lucas likes you though, he might be crazy but it’s clear when he always stares at you in class,” Leticia winked and walked out of the class leaving me speechless.
