Chapter 491: Peril!

Book:Fallen Heir Rising Published:2024-8-26

A pack of wolves surrounded the two, who stood back-to-back, gripping knives and flashlights, ready to fend off any attack.
The wolves bared their teeth, looking ferocious and menacing.
“That’s the alpha,” Quentin said.
At that moment, the alpha let out a howl, and the pack lunged at them, moving with lightning speed, their forms almost imperceptible to the naked eye.
Quentin and Eileen remained calm and composed despite the danger.
Their knives flashed faster than the wolves’ attacks, cutting down the oncoming pack with precision.
In just a few breaths, the clash of blades and claws was over. The ground was soon covered with a mountain of wolf corpses, blood flowing like rivers.
The entire pack was decimated, leaving only a few stray wolves and the alpha.
Seeing Quentin and Eileen’s icy gazes and their blood-stained blades, the remaining wolves retreated in fear, but the alpha stood its ground, ready to attack.
Despite knowing Quentin and Eileen’s strength, the alpha chose to defend its dignity as the leader.
The alpha moved even faster than the other wolves, leaping towards them with sharp fangs bared and claws slashing through the air.
Quentin moved with the speed and grace of a dragon, charging at the alpha.
He blocked its claws with his knife and delivered a powerful kick that sent the alpha flying.
The alpha twisted in mid-air to reduce the impact as it landed, steadying itself despite spitting blood. It charged again with renewed ferocity.
Quentin smirked coldly, sidestepped the alpha’s claws, flipped behind it, and grabbed its head, slamming it into the ground.
Half of the alpha’s face was buried in the dirt as it struggled fiercely, glaring at Quentin with defiance.
“The pride of an alpha is worthy of respect,” Quentin said before driving his knife into the alpha’s skull without a hint of mercy.
Pity for a brave opponent is disrespect!
The alpha ceased its struggles, its last breath escaping its body.
Seeing their leader dead, the remaining wolves fled in terror, running at incredible speeds.
Quentin didn’t bother to chase them; he had no time to waste.
Time was pressing; he needed to get out of this mountain and find Miao Village quickly.
Quentin and Eileen packed up their gear, skinned the alpha for its fur, and continued their journey.
The mountain’s temperature was extremely low, and they hadn’t brought warm clothing. The wolf’s fur would provide excellent insulation.
They climbed upward, soon reaching the mountain’s peak. Ahead, they could see a glimmer of sunlight filtering through the trees.
Quentin and Eileen quickened their pace towards the light.
Finally, they reached the summit and emerged from the forest as if stepping out of a dark abyss into the sunlight.
But what lay before them left them stunned.
The peak was a sheer cliff, shrouded in thick fog below with no visible end. Who knew how many had perished at its base?
Another cliff faced them across a chasm. According to their map, they needed to cross to continue their journey.
However, there were no ropes or bridges in sight.
Fortunately, Quentin had studied the terrain beforehand and brought climbing ropes and equipment just in case.
He attached a grappling hook to one end of the rope and threw it across to the opposite cliff, where it caught firmly on a large tree root.
Quentin pulled hard to ensure it was secure.
He then anchored the other end to a sturdy tree on their side, creating a taut line across the chasm.
Quentin and Eileen secured themselves with safety harnesses attached to the rope.
They gripped the rope tightly with all four limbs and began climbing swiftly across to the other side.
Looking down into the bottomless abyss sent chills down their spines.
If the rope snapped or they made a mistake, they would be shattered to pieces.
They climbed skillfully and quickly; rope climbing was routine for them from their military training.
Soon enough, they reached the opposite cliff, unhooked their safety gear, and continued on their way.
The rope would remain for their return journey or for future travelers heading to Miao Village.
They entered another forest, descending further. The forest was just as foggy, dark, and cold as before.
They reached a flat area where a cave entrance loomed ahead, pitch-black like an endless abyss.
“Sir, according to the map, there are two routes. This cave seems to be the quickest way to Miao Village,” Eileen said.
“How long have we been traveling?” Quentin asked.
“About two hours,” Eileen replied.
“Then let’s take the cave. It will save us considerable time.”
“But we don’t know what dangers might lurk inside. Stay alert.”
“Who’s there? Show yourself!” Eileen suddenly sensed movement and hurled her knife towards the sound.
