“What’s the use of just saying you love me? I’ll be a useless person in the future.” Evie forcefully pulled her hand out of Jasper’s large palm, a cold smile playing on her lips. “Let’s break up.”
“Evie?” Jasper looked at Evie’s pale face in shock, his heart aching. “Why break up? I would never break up with you. I want to marry you!”
“Just because you want to marry me, I have to agree?” Evie gently touched her lower abdomen, where a child once grew.
She hadn’t even had the chance to feel its presence before it was gone.
Tears uncontrollably streamed down her face.
Would she never be able to have children again?
Would she never have a child of her own in this lifetime?
A dull pain in her lower abdomen reminded her of the fact that one of her fallopian tubes had been removed.
She was still so young…
Evie wiped away her tears and stubbornly glared at Jasper. “Leave, get out! I don’t want to see you.”
Seeing her anger, Jasper quickly tried to soothe her. “It’s all my fault, Evie… Don’t joke about your health. You’ve had surgery and need to stay in the hospital for at least a week. Please don’t get too emotional, okay?”
He was afraid she might hurt herself.
Evie, with tears in her round eyes, glared at him. “Don’t worry about me. We’re breaking up now! Jasper, leave. Every time I see you, I think of my child and everything I’ve been through. Just go… Don’t appear in front of me again.”
Tears flowed down her cheeks, making her pale face look even more pitiful.
Jasper felt another stab of pain in his heart, his voice hoarse. “Alright, I’ll go. I’ll leave.”
But he only stepped out of the room and sat on a chair outside, not leaving the hospital.
He couldn’t bear to leave.
Inside the room, the atmosphere was heavy. Evie watched Jasper’s back as he left before closing her eyes again.
She felt so sad.
Sylvia wanted to comfort her but didn’t know where to start.
She glanced at Franklin, who nodded understandingly and walked out, closing the door behind him.
Sylvia sat in front of Evie. “Why break up with Jasper? Don’t you like him a lot? You two are so close; don’t say break up so easily.”
Evie looked at Sylvia with tearful eyes, her voice choked. “Boss… I don’t want to either! But my child is gone, and so is my fallopian tube.”
“Whether I can have children in the future is uncertain. He should find true love elsewhere.”
“Why should he be entangled with a broken woman like me?”
How could Jasper’s family allow their lineage to end?
Rather than being humiliated and abandoned by the Gibson family later, she thought it better to leave voluntarily now.
“You’re really too foolish. Jasper doesn’t care about these things; didn’t he just say that?” Sylvia looked at the young girl with pity.
“You can always adopt if you really want children…”
“Adopted children are not the same as biological ones. Boss, you don’t need to persuade me anymore. My mind is made up.” Evie wiped her tears again. “Fate is like this; it always picks someone to bully harshly. Like me.”
She never thought she would have an ectopic pregnancy one day and might not be able to conceive again.
It’s too ridiculous!
She was so young…
She didn’t dare think further.
“It’s okay; I can go back to Middle Evroya. Sierra and Alex are still there! I’ll raise Alex with Sierra and make him a strong man!” Evie forced a smile.
Seeing that she couldn’t persuade her, Sylvia changed the subject.
“I’ll stay with you tonight.”
“Alright! Having Boss accompany me is such an honor.” Evie playfully stuck out her tongue.
But Sylvia couldn’t smile.
She felt sad, her chest tight with grief.
The issue of children weighed heavily not only on Evie but also on Sylvia.
She might not be able to have children either, and Franklin wanted a baby of their own.
She took a deep breath. “Since you’re awake, have some porridge. Otherwise, you’ll have no strength.”
She opened the thermal lunch box and took out the porridge, feeding it to Evie.
Evie couldn’t sit up properly, so Sylvia had to feed her.
Franklin stayed with Jasper outside as night deepened.
Just as Sylvia opened the door to let them go home, hurried footsteps echoed down the hallway. She looked up to see Mr. and Mrs. Howlett rushing over.
They were clearly fresh off a plane, having come straight to the hospital.
“How is she now?” Mrs. Howlett asked urgently upon seeing Jasper and the others.
“The surgery was successful,” Jasper briefly explained Evie’s current condition.
Mrs. Howlett sighed sadly and handed Jasper a jade bracelet. “I’ve thought it over. If you truly love her, children don’t matter… give this to her.”
Tears streamed down her face as she leaned into Geoff’s arms, heartbroken. “What a tragedy! How did it come to this?”
“Mom?” Jasper looked at her in shock. “Didn’t you disapprove?”
“What good does my disapproval do? Evie is a good girl; she’s already suffering physically and emotionally. If we don’t show some support now, how much more pain will she endure?” Mrs. Howlett was deeply saddened at the thought of possibly never holding a grandchild.
“Your mother has been thinking about it all the way here and decided that as long as you two are happy, that’s all that matters,” Geoff added, equally distressed by his wife’s sorrow.
Jasper nodded heavily. “Mom, thank you.”
With that, he walked back into the room.
Sylvia didn’t disturb them but sat with Mrs. Howlett instead. “Evie wants to break up. She’s not in a good emotional state.”
“Break up? Why break up?” Mrs. Howlett cried even harder, grabbing Sylvia’s hand. “What kind of mess is this!”
“Mrs. Howlett, please don’t be too sad. One fallopian tube was removed, but there’s still another one. The chances of pregnancy are lower but not impossible,” Sylvia gently comforted her.
Inside the room, Evie thought Sylvia had returned but looked up to see Jasper’s familiar face instead.
Her expression immediately darkened. “What are you doing here?”
Jasper walked over and gently opened a box. “Evie, this is a family heirloom of the Gibson family, traditionally passed down to daughters-in-law. My mom brought it here for you. Once you wear it, you’ll be mine and part of the Gibson family!”
His voice was firm and resolute. “You’re the woman I’ve chosen for life.”
“Jasper, stop being crazy! I can’t have children! Are you insane?” Evie shouted at him angrily. “I’m flawed.”
“So what? I don’t care! Even if your chances are slim or nonexistent, I won’t let go! I want you, not just children!” Jasper patiently explained, almost ready to bare his heart for her.
“One day you won’t care, two days you won’t care, but what about three or four days? A year or two? You’ll eventually envy others with children and wish someone called you ‘Dad’!” Evie cried bitterly. “Stop coming after me; we can’t be together!”
Jasper deserved someone better than her.
She wasn’t worthy of him!
“I don’t care; I won’t let go in this lifetime.” Jasper grabbed her slender wrist and tried to put the jade bracelet on her.
Evie tried to pull back but was too weak compared to Jasper’s strength.
Normally strong and energetic, Evie now felt like a sick kitten with no strength left.
Jasper’s nose tingled with emotion; if it were before, she would have thrown him over her shoulder in anger.
But now… she lay weakly here…
Jasper’s heart ached deeply.
“You don’t even have the strength to throw me anymore…”
He looked at how the jade bracelet highlighted her fair skin on her wrist. “Evie, get better soon. Once you’re well again, I’ll be with you no matter what you do.”
Evie looked at him in despair. “Why don’t you understand? We’re not suitable for each other.”
“I’ll cling to you forever,” Jasper said contentedly as he saw she wasn’t resisting anymore. “Wear this well; no matter what happens, you’re my wife. Evie, don’t be afraid.”
Tears streamed down Evie’s face; she was never one to cry easily but now… she couldn’t help it.
How could she ever deserve him?
“I’m staying with you tonight; let them go home and rest,” Jasper said softly as he kissed her hand before heading out of the room.
A moment later, Sylvia and Franklin came in to say goodbye while Mrs. Howlett and Geoff followed suit.
Seeing Evie’s frail state made Mrs. Howlett cry again despite having just stopped.
“My dear child! How are you feeling now? Any better?”
“Honey, you’re an elder now; you can’t keep crying,” Geoff comforted her quickly. “Didn’t Sylvia say it’s not a big problem? She can still get pregnant; it’s just less likely.”
“I can’t help it; I care about Evie too much.” Mrs. Howlett sniffled and handed over a bank card. “We rushed here straight from the airport without bringing any gifts; here’s five hundred thousand dollars for some fruits and supplements.”
