The next day, Quentin arrived at Charlotte’s house.
Janessa and Theo had already gone to school, Emery and his son had gone to the Purity opening, and Charlotte was also not at home. Only Emma was in the living room watching TV.
When Emma saw Quentin, she did not make things difficult for him as she had before. Instead, she greeted him with a full smile.
“Quentin, you’re here so early today. Come, have a seat.”
Seeing Emma suddenly become so polite, Quentin was a bit taken aback. Could it be that Emma had come around?
“Auntie, where did Charlotte go?” Quentin asked as he sat on the sofa.
Quentin first inquired about Charlotte, not paying much attention to Emma’s unusual behavior.
“Charlotte went out to handle some matters today. She won’t be back soon.”
“Do you want me to ask her for you?”
Thinking about Charlotte’s previous bet with Virginia, Quentin could easily guess that she had probably gone to the Zeustimes Group for a meeting.
“No need, Mom. If Charlotte is busy, let’s not disturb her.”
“I’ll come back later.” Feeling a bit helpless that Charlotte was not at home, Quentin stood up to leave.
Emma quickly called out to him.
“Quentin, stay a while and help me with a small task.”
“Mom, just tell me. We are family; there’s no need to talk about helping or not helping.”
Quentin didn’t know what Emma wanted him to do, but he was willing to help with anything, as he owed Charlotte’s family a lot.
“Charlotte bought a few boxes of fruit today and left them in the kitchen. Can you help me move them to Charlotte and the children’s rooms?”
“The old man and Rashad are not here, and my back is not good. I can’t move them.”
“Charlotte works so hard for this family. I want her and the kids to have more nutrition.”
Emma said as she patted her old back.
“Mom, it’s nothing. This is what I should do. You sit and rest; I’ll move them right away.”
With that, Quentin went to the kitchen to move the boxes of fruit and took them to the children’s and Charlotte’s rooms.
After delivering the fruit to the children’s room, he entered Charlotte’s room. It was a simple room with a bed, a wardrobe, and a desk.
The air was filled with Charlotte’s fragrance, and a photo frame on the desk stood out. It was a picture of Charlotte with her two children.
Quentin put down the two boxes of fruit he was carrying and sat by the bedside. He picked up the photo and looked at it for a long time, thinking about how much hardship Charlotte and the children had endured in the five years he was gone. His heart was filled with guilt.
Now that he was back, Quentin vowed to protect them at all costs.
He put down the photo and carefully observed every corner of the room. As he looked around, he noticed a phone placed by the pillow with a letter underneath it.
“Isn’t this Charlotte’s phone? How could she be so careless as to forget her phone?”
Quentin picked up Charlotte’s phone and saw an unread message from Nash. He couldn’t resist opening it.
Charlotte: Nash, where are we meeting today?
Nash: Moonstar Hotel. I’ll be waiting for you.
Charlotte: You go first; I have some things to take care of. I’ll be there soon.
Nash: Waiting for you.
After reading these messages, Quentin felt his heart being torn apart. His face contorted with rage, veins bulging, breathing heavily. He almost crushed the phone in his grip.
He couldn’t believe it! He couldn’t believe Charlotte would do such a thing! But at this moment, Quentin began to lose control of his rationality.
He painfully opened the letter dated five years ago when Charlotte and Nash were still in high school together.
The letter was filled with Charlotte expressing her admiration for Nash.
So it was true. What Nash had told him that day was all true. He was merely the one who had disrupted their childhood romance.
With waves of heartache, Quentin put the letter and phone into his pocket and quickly walked out of Charlotte’s room, each step almost shattering the floorboards beneath him.
Seeing Quentin come out exuding an aura of menace and with eyes gleaming coldly, Emma was terrified. She had never seen Quentin look so frightening.
“Quentin, what’s wrong? What happened?”
Quentin ignored her and quickly left Charlotte’s house, driving away at high speed.
Watching Quentin speed away, Emma revealed a triumphant smile. Everything had gone according to her plan.
