Nicklaus’s POV
“Just don’t tell her. When everything has fallen into the right place, we can then tell her. Can you do that?”
“Do what? What are you both talking about? Are you hiding something from me? What could that be?” I heard Gabby’s voice. How much did she hear? I hope Jessica won’t blow everything up.
“Oh, talk of the angel; she’s here. Your husband and I were planning a surprise for you. I can’t believe you heard us. I think next time we’ll have to leave this mansion and go far away to plan, so we can still catch you by surprise.” I thought Jessica was going to ruin everything. This means it’s a yes; she’s going to keep it a secret at all costs, and I will make sure to repay her with something good someday.
I noticed the big smile on Gabby’s face. I guess she’s happy knowing we’re planning a big surprise for her. I will make use of this opportunity to plan something significant for her. I will spend my entire life making her happy and ensuring she never sheds a tear for any reason.
“Don’t worry; I didn’t hear anything. I can simply turn around now, and you both can continue planning. For the record, I love cake very much.” She replied. It’s also good she didn’t hear much; I can handle this case the way I want now.
“Don’t worry; we’re done anyway. I will be taking my leave now. Trust me, alpha; I won’t let her know,” Jessica said, giving me a clue to take over. I’m happy she’s very smart, and thank the goddess she didn’t doubt us as well. Things are working out well.
“I’m sorry, my love; I didn’t know you were planning something great for me.” She hugged me, and I felt guilty for lying directly to the woman I love so much. I kissed her forehead, saying, “You don’t have to be sorry, but I will also surprise you one day.” I carried her, and she insisted I put her down, but I am certain she doesn’t want that, seeing the way her cheeks are red.
“Where are you taking me, anyway? Please put me down.”
“I’m taking you out into the world. I want to show you off. You’re so beautiful, and you’re my mate. I’m proud of you,” I said with all sincerity.
“I’m bored here and tired of training every day. Is there anything fun we can do? Like just the three of us,” she said, and I was not happy at all. My mate was bored, meaning I had failed in my duty. What must I do to make her feel livelier? “Three of us” – does she mean along with Jessica? That’s not possible. If Jessica is tagging along, then Mateo is also needed, or maybe she meant our daughter.
“You mean both of us, along with our daughter?” I questioned.
“Yes, that’s what I mean,” she replied with all seriousness.
“Then let’s visit the pack. How about that?” I suggested. I know the pack is one fun place to be, and it’s also part of my wish to visit there with my family someday. I guess the time is now to fulfill that.
“That sounds fun to me. So when do we go there?” She inquired.
“How about tomorrow evening?” I know I won’t be free today and tomorrow, except tomorrow evening. I will use that time to spend quality time with my family.
“Not bad. I know Estella will be so excited. I’m going to inform her right now.”
She wanted me to put her down, but I refused. “If you want me to put you down, then you have to kiss me first, and I’ll think about it. So, do we have a deal?”
“I won’t kiss you,” she said.
“If you won’t kiss me, then I won’t put you down. So, will you kiss me or not?” I repeated the words.
“Okay, I will kiss you,” she finally accepted.
“That’s my girl.” I kissed her slowly and deeply. She closed her eyes throughout, and when she finally opened them, she looked extremely beautiful. I put her down and whispered to her.
“I love you.”
“I love you too,” she said to me.
Mateo’s mind linked with mine, letting me know they had found some things belonging to the enemy in our pack. I responded, “Okay, Mateo, I will meet you there. Also, let me know if you see anyone acting suspicious in the area.”
“Yes, Alpha, I will do that.”
“Good. Be careful.” I ended the mind link and turned to my mate, saying, “I need to go now, pack issues.”
“What about the lady in your custody? Did she tell you who she’s working for?” She finally asked the questions I had been dreading. I had no choice but to continue lying to cover up the lies I had already told.
“She doesn’t know. She was just paid some amount of money to mention those words to you.”
“Are you sure about it? It’s kind of suspicious. I think she might be covering something up.” She sounded skeptical, but I had to convince her at all costs.
“I thought as much, but it’s true. The person thought she would expose their identity, so they tried to kill her.”
“I’m glad she survived it.”
“Yeah, me too. But she will remain here until I am ready to let her go.”
“That’s the best thing to do.” She replied with a smile.
I left and headed directly to meet Mateo at the location he had shared with me. Upon arrival, I saw various items belonging to the enemy. “Are they trying to attack us again from within? This is a silver bullet and yellow wolfbane, both harmful to us.”
“I think they are prepared, and we need to be ready to attack soon. We also have to equip our men because with weapons like these, this fight won’t end well at all,” Mateo suggested.
“Yeah, you’re right. Hey, you there, take all these to our weapons storage as well. Mateo, come with me,” I ordered, and they obeyed without hesitation.
“Yes, Alpha.” Mateo walked with me as we stepped out together.
“What should we do with the woman in our custody?” I questioned him, and he took some time before replying, “I would say we keep her because we don’t know if she is lying or telling the truth.”
“Yes, I thought about that as well. But the problem now is that the guards once pointed at Jessica, saying she was the one who drugged them, and now this lady is also accusing her. Do you think this is just a coincidence?”
“Not at all. I will keep a close eye on her and report to you immediately if I notice anything suspicious.”
“Are you sure you can betray the woman you love?”
“She is not my woman,” he denied as usual.
“If you are asked to deal with her, can you do it? Think about it properly, and remember you are my Beta.” I said these words and got ready to observe the area.
That night, I couldn’t sleep at all. I looked at my mate sleeping soundly, kissed her cheek, and got out of bed to take a walk.
As I approached Mateo’s bedroom, I heard moaning sounds coming from his room. It seemed he had finally chosen to be with her, yet he acted like there was nothing going on between them. I hoped Jessica wasn’t the enemy we were supposed to fight. I regretted everything because this war had started because of me from the very beginning. I had learned something new: never break a woman’s heart, as she would seek revenge through any means.
I ran into the woods and shifted into my wolf form. Sudden anger consumed me for no reason, and I ventured deeper into the woods, farther than I had ever gone before.
I shifted back into human form, and Lethal said to me, “There’s something unsettling about this place.”
“There’s nothing wrong with this place. It’s just that none of us has ventured this deep before,” I replied.
“I smell death,” Lethal said, and I allowed him to merge with my senses. To my horror, I discovered a dead body on the ground. Whose body was this?
