Sophia’s POV
I collapse onto the floor, my limbs trembling, as tears of pain well up in my eyes. My surroundings spin around me, and when I look around, I realize that I had walked to one of the deserted areas and there was no one nearby that could help.
Summoning every ounce of strength, I force myself to crawl towards where my phone lies. Each movement sends a fresh surge of pain through my body, but I can’t afford to succumb to it. I need to reach my phone and call for help.
With gritted teeth and a determined mind, I drag myself across the floor, inch by agonizing inch. The distance feels insurmountable, but the thought of calling Alexander keeps me going. He’s the only person I can turn to in this moment of vulnerability.
Finally, after what feels like an eternity, I reach the phone. My trembling hand fumbles to grab hold of my phone, and I pull it towards me. My vision blurs with tears as I navigate to Alexander’s contact and press the call button, praying that he’ll answer.
The phone rings, each second ticking by painfully. My heart pounds in my chest, and I can feel the weight of desperation pressing down on me. Then, as if the universe has heard my plea, I hear Alexander’s voice on the other end of the line.
“Sophia? Is everything okay?” His voice carries a mix of concern and urgency.
I struggle to catch my breath, my words coming out in gasps. “Alexander, it’s… it’s me. I.. I think my water broke. I’m in so much pain.”
There’s a moment of silence, and then Alexander’s voice fills with alarm. “Where are you? I’m coming over, where are you right now?”
“I’m in school. Near the hallway of my department.”
He pants, “Sophia, stay on the line. I’m coming right away. Just hold on, okay? Everything will be fine.”
His words provide a glimmer of hope in the midst of my anguish. I clutch the phone tightly, tears streaming down my face, as I whisper, “Hurry, Alexander. Please, hurry.”
The line remains open, and I can hear Alexander’s hurried footsteps and muffled voices in the background as he arranges for someone to accompany him. Time seems to stretch endlessly as I lie on the floor, each passing second a reminder of the excruciating pain I’m enduring.
Finally, I hear the sound of hurried footsteps approaching and Alexander’s voice grows louder as he appears. “Sophia! Where are you?”
His words are like a lifeline, and I manage to croak out a weak response, “Under the tree.”
Within moments, Alexander appears before me with Ethan behind him, his face etched with worry and determination. He kneels down beside me, gently cradling my head in his hands. “It’s going to be alright, Sophia. We’re going to get through this together.”
As we reach the car, Ethan opens the door and helps me settle into the backseat. Each movement sends a fresh surge of pain, but I grit my teeth and bear it. Alexander slips into the seat beside me, his eyes never leaving my face.
Ethan quickly takes his place behind the wheel, his hands gripping it tightly. The engine roars to life, and we speed off towards the hospital, the urgency of the situation hanging in the air.
The pain persists during the drive, each jolt of the car adding to my discomfort. But Alexander never lets go of my hand, providing a silent reassurance that anchors me.
He looks down at me, palming my face. “How do you feel?”
“It hurts…” I cry out to him, feeling tears gather at the rim of my eyes again.
His expression darkens as he looks toward Ethan’s direction. “Drive faster, Ethan.”
Ethan looks toward us from the rearview mirror. “I’m trying, sir. But it seems there is traffic up ahead.”
“Traffic!?” Alexander suddenly roars making me jolt.
He looks at me, realizing he scared me and he reaches out to palm my hair. “Sorry, I didn’t mean that.”
He pulls out his phone and dials a number. Almost immediately, I hear the phone connect and Alexander says, “Clear the road to Hinton Hospital right now!’
I heard the voice on the other line quickly respond and the call was disconnected. At this moment, my mind is completely away from the intense pains wracking my stomach. Just being so close to Alexander was enough to comfort me. He has been busy in the past few weeks so he barely has the time to come over.
The ride to the hospital is faster and I can barely see any cars on the road as we go. I suddenly remember something however and I quickly look at Alexander.
“Alexander, it’s only four months. How come my water broke earlier?” I ask. “It’s crazy…”
He doesn’t reply to this and merely looks at me silently, making me feel that there is a different aura enveloping him. I have always known he is a mysterious man. But now it is clearer he has a lot of secrets.
