She even made sure to jiggle them now and then as she spoke in the pretense of adjusting to a comfortable position.
“Sir, your food is served,” She said as she went to stand beside Alpha Lake.
“You can bring the food over here to us, can’t you see we’re busy,” Adeline asked haughtily.
“Pfft!” Audrey snorted, holding herself back from laughing.
“What’s funny, maid?” Adeline could not endure Audrey’s attitude any longer.
Audrey looked at Alpha Lake, expecting him to say something to support Adeline, but, to her surprise, he had mirth dancing across his face.
Audrey couldn’t believe it, was he secretly conspiring against Adeline with her? She never knew he had this mischievous playful side to him.
“I’m sorry, I don’t serve visitors, I only work for the Alpha, if you’re hungry, please go to the Pack’s kitchen…or go for a hunt,” Audrey said with a smile, then turned and walked to the dining.
“You! Alpha! See how that human bitch is talking to me,” Adeline whined annoyingly.
Alpha Lake clenched his fists, he didn’t like the way Adeline had just spoken about Audrey, but he knew Audrey didn’t want people to know they had something going on, if not he would have lashed out at Adeline right then.
“She’s right, Adeline. I’m fine with this,” He pointed to the blueprint on the table, “She is mine, not for anyone to control. Please go to the Pack’s kitchen and order whatever you want,” Alpha Lake informed and walked to the dining table.
Leaving the furious-looking Adeline behind in the living room.
“How did you unlock the box?” Alpha Lake asked as they ate their food on the dining table.
He knew the box was locked with a special kind of key that was specifically designed for only that box.
It was the only one in the whole world, he’s been wondering how she could have easily opened it without breaking anything.
“Oh, that?” Audrey asked and subtly stuffed her mouth with food and chewed slowly, hoping he would forget his question by the time she was done.
“So?” He asked with a smirk, after patiently waiting for her to swallow her food.
Audrey sighed resignedly and looked up to him, “I shimmed it… sorry,” She said convincingly.
Alpha Lake stared at her unbelievably, what more did he have to find out about her? She was like a mystery box, you never knew what lay underneath the closed lid.
“Mm, it’s fine, I was just curious,” He said reassuringly.
He saw how she acted like she had committed some big offense, so he put her at ease.
Audrey smiled secretly to herself, she was glad he bought her lie.
Comfortable silence reigned between them.
“Why?” Alpha Lake asked, breaking the silence between them as they ate.
“Huh? Why what?” Audrey asked, confused. She’d been lost in thought, thinking about Adeline’s visit a few minutes ago, and thinking of a way to go see Janeth down the dungeon without being caught.
Now, hearing his one-worded question confused the shit out of her.
“I asked you to wait, why did you come down?” He stared directly at her.
“I was hungry,” Audrey shrugged ‘And, I didn’t want to get fucked,’ She said in her head. Alpha Lake feIt is bad for her nonchalant attitude.
He thought they shared something earlier, turns out, it was still going to end like it always did between them; her pretending like they were just a boss and a secretary.
“Does everything come and go so easily for you?” Alpha Lake asked with a frown. He was getting tired of their hot and cold relationship.
Audrey saw that he was getting worked up just because she didn’t wait as he had instructed, she sighed and smiled innocently at him, “Calm down, it’s it’s really a big deal-”
“Not a big deal?!” Alpha Lake angrily dropped his fork on the plate and stood from his chair.
Audrey shook slightly from the unexpected noise and temper, looking up to see his angry face.
‘Damn it, someone’s sulking,’ She thought.
She didn’t get why he was so worked up, it was obvious they hated each other and he had made it clear he couldn’t accept her as an adopted sister or a lover… she didn’t even foil herself by thinking about becoming his mate, so, what was the reason for his tantrum?
“You’re putting no effort at all to make this work! I’m here, trying to show you that I’m willing to accept you, even though you’re a human with no wolf, but you just keep sidestepping my advances and dragging all my efforts to dust! You’re just an ungrateful bitch!” Alpha Lake’s voice was so loud and guttural.
His eyes were changing from grey to red, signaling the battle between him and his wolf.
“Then stop,” Audrey sat still, forming her food around the plate.
“What?!” Alpha Lake asked darkly. Not like he didn’t understand what she meant, he wanted to see if she had the guts to say it directly to him.
“Then stop, Mr. Lake. Stop your advances toward a lowly human like me. After all, I never asked you to go against your tradition as a werewolf and try to settle with someone as useless as me,” She quietly stood from her chair, carrying her plate in her hand.
“Adeline seems like the best fit for you, and I’m sure she won’t drag your effort to dust,” She shrugged and scooped a spoonful of rice into her mouth.
Alpha Lake was boiling in anger, he knew she was purposely trying to irritate the hell out of him by acting the way she did. Was it so hard to have a normal conversation with her?
“Catherine, that’s not what I-”
“I’m not ungrateful, I didn’t just ask for your attention, you gave it freely and you got rejected,” Audrey looked into his eyes as she said the last part.
“Learn how to handle rejection, Alpha, I think more of that is on its way to you,” She scooped another spoon of rice into her mouth gently turned around, and walked into the kitchen.
“Fuck!!” Alpha Lake angrily pushed the plate down to the floor.
He hit his palm against his forehead and walked back and forth at a fast pace.
He was furious, this wasn’t how he had imagined this conversation to go, but he let his lust and the mate bond get the better of him.
He slowly walked into the kitchen, he intended to straighten things between them. It was time they started acting like the adults they were.
“Catherine,” He called from behind her.
Audrey had leisurely finished her food when she came to the kitchen, she was no longer affected by his harsh words, in fact; it would be lovely if he could really keep his hands to himself, she was also tired of the situationship between them.
Hearing his voice behind her as she washed out her plate in the sink brought back memories of what had almost happened in this same kitchen between them. She quickly discarded the useless and finished rinsing her plate before turning to him.
“Yes, sir? If it’s about your schedule; You’ll be having a meeting with Mr. Russell later this afternoon, Mr. Mark will be coming in later this evening, and the files- mng-”
Alpha Lake angrily closed the space between them and smashed his lips to hers.
He kissed her angrily and only pulled away when he noticed she wasn’t responding.
“What’s the problem?” He whispered.
“Everything,” Audrey chuckled and gently pushed him away.
“This,” She pointed from herself to him, “Is wrong. You’re doing it again…” She walked around him and walked out of the kitchen.
“Doing what?” He caught her arm before she could climb up the stairs.
Audrey took a deep breath and turned around to face him.
“This, you’re trying so hard again, like I said, you don’t seem to handle rejection well. I. Don’t. Want. You. It’s as simple as that. Can’t you see this is toxic?” Audrey asked in a serious tone.
“Let’s say I never looked like the person you hate the most, it still wouldn’t have worked between us, I’m just a lowly human… don’t forget that. If you’ll excuse me, I have some emails to attend to.” Audrey snatched her arm away from his grip and walked up the stairs.
“We can work this out, Catherine,” He held her door, preventing her from shutting it.
Audrey rolled her eyes and sighed, ‘How stubborn,’ She thought.
“Just yesterday, who was it that told me not to delude myself just because we’ve shared a few kisses? Huh?” Audrey taunted.
“About that, I was-”
SLAM!!!
CLICK!!!
The door was harshly slammed on him and the clicking sounds of locking followed almost immediately.
He was frustrated. Fuck the mate bond for making him lose every shred of dignity as an Alpha because of Audrey.
No one would believe that the most powerful Alpha was being treated like a dog by a little human woman.
“Shit!” He cursed and slammed his fist to the wall.
