*Danika*
Slowly I peeled my eyes open an inch, then opened them fully, wondering why I felt out of place. I stretched my hand as I skimmed my eyes around my setting, my brain still reorganizing itself. I feel unnaturally good, why is that?
I pushed to a sitting position, then recollected the event of last night that had led to me being here. A creep was in my room. Alonso had brought me to this room and had stayed when I asked him.
I darted my eyes to the left side of the bed where he lay with me in his arms last night, but he wasn’t there. Like every other night, he was gone. I felt bad, despite knowing it was bound to happen. I should be happy he was here with me last night and didn’t leave me to tremble throughout the night in fright.
Slipping to the edge of the bed, I paused, a certain sensation running through me, then it occurred to me at once! My training! I missed my training, Gad damn it! How did I slept in so late? The morning light was fully covered by now. It could only be blamed on Alonso holding me throughout the night. It’s always like that whenever he stays with me. Alfred would be crossed with me.
I picked up my phone that was as usual nestled at the top of the glossy bed stand and dialed his number. It was turned off. He never turns off his phone-he told me. I dropped the phone and tried to link him, but he blocked me out.
What is going on? Hope he is okay? Shrugging away the ogre sentiment, I stood from the bed and went to the pristine bathroom to pee and quickly take my bath. When I came out, I dressed up, picked my black hairband on the table and tied my hair haphazardly on top of my hair, and made my way out of the room. I have to pick up a few of my stuff since I would be staying here for now.
Snaking through the halls, I made it to my room and brought out one of the packing bags to heap my things inside. Then I felt someone trying to link me and opened up.
“Hy, Ms. Danika,” Nadia reeled in excitement.
“Hy, Nadia. Good morning.” I was still packing.
“I came to the room, you weren’t there. Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I am in the room now, you can come.”
“Okay, I will be there.”
The link went off and not long, there was a slight knock and she came in.
“I was so worried when I came in very early and you were not on your bed. Since we spoke last night I couldn’t sleep,” she rambled once she was in, lurking at me.
I looked up from my bag of clothes, holding a cloth in my hand. She looked very weary. “Someone came into the room yesterday. I had to leave.” I guess I had to tell her. We were becoming somewhats close, so it’s inevitable she would know since she is my maid.
“Someone came in here? Who?”
“That’s the problem. I don’t know,” I pointed at the window. “The person came in through the window. It’s apparent they have an evil motive.”
“Oh, my. Was that why you asked if I opened it? You should have told me. I would have come immediately.”
“There was no use. I went to the King. He confirmed it, so I had to go to the guest room,” and slept with the King. I didn’t tell her that part. She would grow horns in shock.
“I’m so sorry, Ms. Danika. I’m just worried about why the person would come here in the first place. You are a very nice person, who would want to hurt you?”
I bobbed my shoulders and dropped the bag, then she ran forth and began packing my other stuff. “So you would be moving to the new room?”
“Yeah. The King thinks till it’s resolved, it’s best I stayed in the guest room,” I said.
“Oh, I’m happy he didn’t say you should go back to the Beta’s house.”
I cocked my brow. “Why? Would that be so bad?” Now she said it, it reminds me of the rumors. I will have to tell Alonso about it later. I had forgotten as usual in the fling of our moment. He constantly makes me skip shits.
“I have gotten used to you. I wouldn’t want you gone at all. It’s hard to see mistresses like you that are kind to low ranking wolves like us,” she sounded down.
I grinned. “You are nice too. Besides, you were kind to me, so we are friends. Friends are good to each other.” I said and meant it. She’s very nice and does her duties without grumbling. I should be the one grateful to her for making my life stress free. I have seen most Omegas from my former pack. They were bratty and crappy-faced!
She giggled heartily and went to the washroom. I hope she finds her mate soon. She told me some time ago that she hasn’t met her mate since she clocked eighteen two years ago. I believe he is out there and would find her someday. I wish she doesn’t have to go through the shitty phase of rejection like me. She is soft-hearted and might not bear it.
“So here we go!” She grabbed the bag on the floor and made for the door, lowered it, and faced me. “Which of the rooms?”
“Let’s go.” I grabbed my toiletries, ready to leave.
“No! You can’t carry anything. Do you want the chief Omega to bash me? Don’t worry, I will bring this to the room and come back!”
I gave her a quizzical look, snorted, and grabbed the bag. “It’s my stuff and if anyone hurts you, you tell me. Now let’s go!” I crossed her, ignoring her protest to walk out the door. What’s wrong with these people?
When we got to the new room, we started packing things away. It’s almost breakfast from the time on the clock, so we had to hurry.
“No wonder the King is having a meeting this morning,” Nadia continued our earlier discussion, packing away my dresses in the wardrobe.
“They are having a meeting?” My interest was piqued.
“Yeah. A serious one from the look of things. All the elders are present and it’s rare. It’s been a long time since the Kingdom experienced any form of attack or rebellion from any of the smaller packs. That is only when these meetings are ever held,” she rattled on.
“Oh,” I echoed. The King already called a meeting? Wow. He’s that efficient. Maybe that’s why Alfred didn’t respond to my link and his phone was turned off.
“I hope whoever it is, is caught and punished for such a heinous atrocity. And for the person’s good, let him not be a rogue.”
“Why?” I quizzed.
“The King’s worst enemies are rogues. He could easily forgive a Vampire or any of the other creatures crossing his path, than a rogue,” she informed me, dropping the last of my toiletries in the bathroom and coming back.
“Why does the King hate rogues? It’s not their fault they are packless,” I defended, knowing very soon if nothing changes, I will become one.
“His mate was killed by a rogue. From what I heard from mama, she went out for a pack tour and on her way back, decided to go for a run in the woods. She was attacked by two Prowler Venams. They’re the worst rogues due to how vicious they are. They had managed somehow to penetrate the pack barrier. They slaughtered her beyond recognition, only her remains were gathered. It was very painful. She was a very powerful white wolf and Mom said she had fought till her last breath. The King was devastated for years. I think he still is.”
I held onto the bag of undies in my hand tightly, my heart wrenching at her narration. Why would the rogues perform such an evil act? It was so painful to hear. No wonder the King is distant and cold. All these must have contributed to making him hardened and void of human emotions. Then on top of that, his mother who was supposed to be his comfort keeps him at arm’s length.
“Ms. Danika, are you okay?”
I looked up at her, only then discovering I was shedding tears. I sniffed, wiping snort away from my nose as I rose from the bed. Every day, I keep hearing things that melt my heart toward the King. He has been through a lot in life. Lost so much and yet, he is fighting through them to be the best King to his people. “Yes, I am. I’m just traumatized on his behalf.”
She nodded and came to sit by my side, taking my left hand in hers. “I feel the same too. That’s why I told you he is not as bad as y’all think. He has been through a lot and his mother doesn’t help much. She expects him to be like his father… Forgetting that his father was a bloodhound. People think our King is ruthless. But in my life, I’ve never seen anyone as heartless and ruthless as the former King.”
“Hmm, he was that ruthless?”
“More than ruthless! He killed his former mate for not bearing him an heir before he married the present Luna Queen.” She leaned closer to me and whispered, “I even heard the present Queen had cast a spell on him so he could mate with her and not just that, though it was never confirmed, they also said she was even pregnant before the Luna ceremony!”
My eyeballs expanded.
She shut off the bed, palming her mouth, fear written all over her visage. “I shouldn’t have said all that. Forgive-”
I broke down in laughter. “On the contrary, thanks for telling me all that. But, I think it’s time for breakfast. I have work today…” She nodded frantically and went back to work.
I went down for breakfast, thoughts of everything she said rummaging through my head. Even during breakfast I found my eyes flitting to the Queen in the introspection of what Nadia said about her. Could they be true?
