Mia
I flicked off the paper in front of me, tired of staring through fonts and ink. I had been busy. No, I had been trying to keep myself busy. Those were what I had been trying to do all day, all week since the boys had left.
I missed them. I missed them with an ache that had my heart rolling and I couldn’t imagine how they would feel as well since we were all mates and were apart. I was sure that it would be hard on them the same way it was hard on them. I wondered how they felt. We had calls everyday and almost every minute but that couldn’t suffice for being together.
I couldn’t tell if they were in pain from our phone conversation as they were trying hard to hide it from me which was also what I was trying to do. I was also hiding it from them how much I missed them so they wouldn’t be distracted and be able to concentrate where they were.
I sighed. As if we could hide how we felt. Even if we didn’t talk about it, we all knew that we were missing one another greatly. It was the magic of the mating bond at work and there was nothing we could do to it. I had been trying to get myself busy by immersing myself in documents from the estates and the pack but I couldn’t do it anymore.
I was tired. I flicked off the last paper I was going through, closed the laptop on my desk and sighed as I held my head in my hands.
I heard a knock on my door and raised my head up. “Who is that?” I asked, wondering who it was. I didn’t think it was time for lunch yet and I didn’t ask for any of the maids.
“It’s me, darling.” My mum’s voice boomed through the door.
I quickly picked up my phone, checking through the screen to see if I had sheen of tears in my eyes. I hadn’t been crying but I didn’t want her to know that I had been close to tears.
“Come in, mum.” I said to her.
She walked in with a tray in her hands. I could smell the tea even before she got to where I was. She set the tray on a stool before me and sat beside me. “Here. I thought you would need it. You have been working a lot lately.”
“I thought I had to do it.” I shrugged. If only she knew that her daughter might go crazy if she didn’t find something to keep herself busy.
“Are all these documents from the estate? I had no idea it was this much work. What is then the essence of getting a manager to make the workload reduced?”
“Hmmm.” I said instead of replying as I didn’t want to lie to her. She didn’t know that I was now also the Luna of a pack and had more duties on my hands. I could get a manager to help me out with the duties of being a baroness because I lived far but I couldn’t get a personal assistant to help me out with the duties of a Luna. I had to do the work myself.
She placed her hand on my shoulder and rubbed it. “You will be fine.”
“Hmm hmmm.” I groaned in pleasure. That felt fine. I wished that she would do that again.
“Hope you are fine though?” She asked. “You have not been showing up at meal times.”
“Yes, mum.” I nodded. “I have been asking the maids to bring my food in here. I have been eating, you don’t have to worry about me. It’s just that I’ve been busy lately.”
She nodded. “I understand. I hope that you would take care of yourself though.”
“I always do, mum.” I smiled at her to reassure her. I couldn’t tell her that I was avoiding joining them at mealtimes as I didn’t want to see where the boys used to sit and be reminded of them. I was worried that I would burst out crying then and mum would be suspicious of why I was crying because I missed my brothers.
I would have to explain myself and there was no way I would do that without letting the cat out of the bag and shocking the hell out of my poor mother.
No, that wasn’t right. I wouldn’t be telling mum about my relationship with her step-sons that way. Moreover, I didn’t want to do that unless the boys were around, no matter how much I wanted her to know of my hidden secret.
She exhaled and nodded at me. “If you say so.” She smiled as she got up from the bed. “Let me leave you to your work so I do not disturb you.”
She said and walked out of the room. I took a sip of the tea and moaned at how good it tasted. I had missed mum’s cooking. I sat back and enjoyed the tea, thinking of how delicious it tasted on my buds. It wasn’t like I was going to go back to work. I was tired of it and didn’t mind not seeing another document for the next one week.
My phone rang and I gasped in surprise to see the caller ID. “Ava!” My voice was filled with excitement as I spoke. “It’s so nice to hear from you again.”
She chuckled. “You say that and yet, you couldn’t call. We were expecting you to call after you left in a rush that day and have been trying to get across to you as well but we couldn’t. All your lines were unreachable. I couldn’t believe that I was going to be able to get to you now. I just decided to try again and voila, it went through.”
I chuckled at her lengthy words. “Don’t mind me. We have had a lot of things to do since we have been home. I don’t think any of us have been with our phones. I’m sorry we missed your calls.”
“Hope no problem? What happened?”
“Quinn became the alpha of the pack and I became the Luna as well. We had been busy going through the selection process and ceremony.”
“Congratulations, girl.” Ava screeched. “I’m happy for you. No wonder you have been busy.”
I sighed. “Yes.”
“Where is Quinn?” She asked. “Is he there with you? I would like to greet him.”
I sighed. “He is here. He went away to work. Their boss suddenly called for them to resume.”
“That is sad. Don’t you miss them?”
“I miss them like crazy.”
She chuckled. “I know you do. Why don’t you visit them?”
“What?” I gasped. That was a crazy idea. “Can I do that?”
“Why not?” She clucked her tongue. “I know they miss you as much as you miss them and would be happy to see you. It’s going to be a great surprise that they wouldn’t ever forget.”
I smiled, loving the idea and ended the call. I told mum that I would be back and quickly dashed out of the house, knowing I had a long journey ahead of me. I didn’t tell the boys that I would be coming and I smiled as I drove, imagining their reactions when they see me.
It was dark by the time I got there and was allowed in. I was directed to where I would find them and walked with a bounce on my feet, excited about seeing them again.
“What!” I shouted at the sight I saw. There was a lady trying to flirt with Quinn. I tried to be cool but I couldn’t. I was blinded with jealousy and rage.
Quinn turned at the sound of my voice and gasped when he saw me. I was certainly not what he was expecting to see. Seeing a lady with him wasn’t what I was expecting either.
“Mia! Wait! I can explain.” He said, pushing off the lady he was talking to.
I didn’t bother listening to him and walked away before I could do something that I would regret. Ava was right. This was a surprise that we all wouldn’t forget.
