Mia
Mum was wrong. I wasn’t about to get new friends, I only succeeded in getting new enemies. I was also wrong. It wasn’t about to become interesting. Rather, it became hell for me. I didn’t think that I was going to get a warm welcome when we were coming here but I didn’t think that I was going to get an hostile welcome as well.
The only thing mum was right about was that they were my cousins; cousins who hated me with a passion without knowing me.
While I was on the call with mum, they had been looking at me like I was a product on the shelf, set there for their appraisal. Immediately I ended the call with mum, they looked up at me and their eyes were filled with an intense hatred that I took a step back unconsciously. I didn’t know what brought that on but I didn’t have to wonder for long as they informed me pretty quickly on why they didn’t like me.
“So, you are the new baroness.” One of them sneered.
“Excuse you!” I reacted, hating their tone.
“Oh! She is already acting like one even before her coronation.” The second one said. “Forgive our manners, your honor. I’m Amy and she is Avilla.”
I snorted at them. They were being unnecessarily cocky and arrogant and I needed to let them know they were being ridiculous. “I don’t think I have to be a baroness to know I shouldn’t put up with rude and annoying strangers which is what you are.”
Avilla snorted. “We are not strangers. We are your cousins.”
“Then act like one.” I hissed at them. “Even maids treated me better than too have done. I’m glad though that you know you are rude and annoying as you didn’t deny that.”
Their eyes flashed with fire and I wondered if they would yell and pull at my hair. I really wished that they would so I could teach them a lesson they wouldn’t forget in a hurry. I was stronger than they were as I was a werewolf and they were humans. It would be easy for me to scrub their rude mouths with the floor.
I was spoiling for a fight and I wondered if the full moon night was getting nearer. It could be possible that was why my emotions were all heightened up. I missed the boys with an intense pang that surprised me and now, I was angry, boiling with a rage inside of me that didn’t feel natural as well.
It was possible that fighting with the girls was how I was going to lose my fatigue. I thought of what the boys had said, asking if the wolves I was pushed to were ones that I could handle. I snorted as I glared at the girls. These were easy targets for me, they weren’t what I couldn’t handle on my own. I was going to crush them and they wouldn’t know what hit them until it did.
“What?” I scowled at them, hinting at them to stop glaring at me.
“You are being annoying.” Amy snorted.
“Says the queens of annoyance.” I snorted at them.
“Watch your backs.” Avilla said to me. “You know this isn’t your house. We live here and know everywhere around here.”
“Watch your necks.” I growled at them. “Try to harm me at your own risks.”
The sisters held each other’s hands and walked away but not before I saw the fear in their eyes. Good. They had better be scared because I would eating them raw if they overstepped their boundaries with me.
I went back into my room with a hiss. It took me a lot of strength to not be petty and bang the door shut as I entered the room. To think that I was an eager fool and thought that I had gotten friends here that I could talk to.
What was their deal? They said we were cousins and yet, they acted like that. One would think that they would be hsppyyto see me since we had never met but it seemed like I was the only one who thought that. I was glad that I didn’t show how excited I was on the phone to meet them when I first opened the door. I would have hated myself right now.
I was also glad that I had gotten caution for myself and didn’t bang the door shut. The door wasn’t the one who ruined my day so I didn’t see why it had to suffer for it. Moreover, the girls would hear the sound of the door slamming against the frame and would know that they had gotten to me. That would dispel the fears in their eyes and encourage them that they can get at me and I didn’t want that.
I sighed as I dropped on the bed, bouncing off it with a pout that wasn’t dignifying. I thought of calling the boys and sharing this with them but I didn’t think it was worth it. I would only end up worrying the boys unnecessarily and giving the girls the attention that they didn’t deserve.
I could do this alone. I could survive this unwanted place alone.
I decided to rest for the one hour that was there before dinner and I didn’t know when I slept off till dinner time. I jumped off the bed when I heard a knock on the door. I looked around the room with confusion, wondering where I was until I finally remembered.
“Oh!” I nodded to myself as I rubbed my hands over my sleepy face. “Who is that?”
“Miss?” I heard the voice through the door and I knew that it was a maid. “Dinner is served and the others are waiting for you at the table.”
“I will be there soon.” I yawned as I got up, stretching up as I did. I heard the pop of my bones and winced. I must have fallen asleep in an odd position. I was glad that I was a werewolf, I knew that my body would work on it and I would be back to being new.
I got to the bathroom, washed my face to erase the signs of sleep. I couldn’t leave any weakness for anyone to attack me with while I would be here. I fixed my hair and didn’t go out until I knew that I was presentable.
“How good of the baroness to join us now for dinner?” Avilla said as joined them.
“She had to have been busy with only what baroness had the privilege to do.” Amy jeered with her.
“Where is this coming from?” Sloan asked, looking at the girls.
“You don’t want to know how she treated us, dad.” Amy whined.
Oh! They were his daughters. I didn’t think we were cousins then. They had lied. Sloan wasn’t any of my father’s siblings based on what mum had told me. He was the manager of the family estates and affairs while Durian was the lawyer. None of the children of my father’s siblings were interested in taking up the responsibility of being here and overseeing the family heritage and so Sloan and Durian had taken it up on themselves to look for me when the old ruler – who was the first son of the family, my father’s eldest brother – died without a heir.
I wondered why the girls were angry at my presence. Did they think that the estates were going to be handed over to their father since the former baron had no heir? They had to be delusional if that was what they thought of. They had to be.
Sloan sighed. “Girls, I know she is rude but you don’t have to make mockery of her. She is the baroness. You have to respect that.”
I rolled my eyes. What comforting rebuke! Was that how he was going to tell his daughters to behave? By smearing me in the mud? What a priceless father. I knew I didn’t make the best of impression on him but he didn’t have the right to judge me as rude when he was the rude one for asking me a questions that were none of my business.
“What?” Amy scoffed. “It’s not like she would send us out of the house.”
I glared at her. “I can.”
I looked at Durian. I was already being seen as rude. It wouldn’t hurt if I give them one more memory to remember me with. “The meeting isn’t until after dinner, right?”
He nodded. He seemed amused by the show and I was annoyed. I wasn’t interested in making anyone entertained at my expense.
I turned to the butler who was standing behind, waiting on us. “Please have my dinner delivered to my room.”
“You have to eat with the family on your first night.” Sloan scowled.
I chuckled. “Exactly why I’m leaving. I’m meant to only eat with my family.”
His eyes darkened with annoyance as he understood what I meant. I didn’t care about his hurt feelings and repeated my instructions to the butler. He nodded and I moved away from the table, shivering with rage as I walked towards my bedroom. I didn’t think I was going to eat well if I sat there and pretended to be fine.
What? Family? They had to be kidding. Did they think people became family because they lived in the same house? I almost pitied the late baron who never had anyone to be with except them.
I could finally understood why dad didn’t bring me here and I knew nothing of this side of his family. They were annoying.
