Mia
It was good to be back. I was glad that I was far from the boys for a while. I had no doubt that I was going to regain my senses soon if I was far from them. The proximity to them was doing shit to my head.
Thankfully, my colleagues had gotten over what was wrong with them and didn’t act like they were possessed as they had done that time.
They were all happy to see me and gushed about how better I looked with the leave that I took.
Sammy was at my table during lunch break. “Welcome back to work.”
“Thank you.” I smiled back at him.
“Here.” He said, handing me a bag.
I checked inside it and found out that it was a necklace that was inside it. It was beautiful but my heart twinged with guilt and discomfort knowing why he was giving me. I couldn’t take it. That would be unfair of me. I decided that I had to be honest with Sammy. I couldn’t let this go on for long and make it seem like I was stringing him along.
With the way I wasn’t enthusiastic about our dates, I thought he would have known of how I felt but it seemed like he was someone who held on stubbornly to hope. I felt bad that I would have to damage that hope.
He shouldn’t have brought this during the lunch break. I hoped that he had eaten or I would be ruining his appetite for the day and I didn’t want that. Sammy was a nice guy even if I didn’t share the same feelings he had for me. I thought of the kind of guy I liked and blanched as my mind went to Jack and the kiss we had shared.
Sammy must have noticed that all the blood drained from my face. “Are you fine, Mia?”
I nodded and cleared my throat. “Yes, I am.” I replied, pushing off the thought of Jack away from my head.
“Do you like the gift?” He smiled, looking hopeful.
I sighed. I didn’t like that I would have to do this.
“It’s beautiful but I can’t accept this, Sammy. I don’t like you as a man and I mean it. I don’t think anything is ever going to change that and it kills me to see you trying hard to win me over.”
He swallowed, looking at me as I spoke. He blinked and I hoped that he wasn’t pushing back tears. Of course, he wasn’t going to cry. I needed to stop being dramatic. He was a nice guy and not a sissy.
“I hope that we can still be good colleagues though.” I added, wondering what was going on with me. I seemed to have a knack for rejecting necklace gifts nowadays.
“Good colleagues?” He chuckled. “Not even friends?”
“I hope we can still be good friends.” I said, correcting myself.
“Good.” He smiled. “See you around, friend.” He said, placing emphasis on the word friend so I could know that he had gotten what I had said.
I sighed as I watched him walk away. I closed from work and went home. I could feel eyes on me and I shrugged it off, telling myself that I was being scared because of what I knew about the dark wizard.
I had felt the same way in the morning that someone was tailing me when I had gone to work. I didn’t want to ignore my gut feeling despite how hard I was trying not to give in to fear.
I decided not to turn off the lights when I went to sleep. I had intentionally overworked myself today hoping that I would be too tired to have nightmares just as I had been when I had gone out with the boys the other day.
I couldn’t delude myself anymore after a week passed and I couldn’t shrug off the feeling that someone was watching me. Before I started freaking out that it was the dark wizard, I needed to confirm if it was my brothers. After all, they had said they wouldn’t be far from me. As much as I didn’t like the idea of them spying on me, I would feel better if I found out that they were the one watching me instead of the dark wizard.
John was surprised to get my call. “It’s a good day that you are calling, Mia. What is the problem?”
I chuckled. “Does it have to be a problem before I call? Can’t I check up on my brother?”
He snorted. “We both know you wouldn’t be so nice. Why do you call?”
“Nothing much. I want to ask if you guys are serious about keeping a watch on me.” I wouldn’t ever tell them that I felt watched. They would be here before I could blink.
“Yes, we are but we haven’t made a move yet. You don’t want us to and we don’t want you to feel uncomfortable.” He chuckled. “Is that what you have been worrying about? You don’t have to look behind your back, Mia. We haven’t left the house so don’t be nervous.”
“Thank you.” I said and ended the call.
I was nervous. I couldn’t help it. My heart skipped many beats at his words. If it wasn’t them watching me, then it had to be the dark wizard. I slumped in my bed as I dropped the phone.
I was beginning to regret not collecting the necklace from the boys.
