Mia
Someone knocked on the door of my bedroom an hour later and I wondered if that was mum coming to wish me a good night rest.
I dropped the book I was reading and went to the door. I regretted my hasty move as soon as I opened the door. I should have asked who was at the door before opening it. I shouldn’t have worked on blind faith and opened the door just like that, knowing the kind of brothers that I had.
I tried to close the door but it was too late. He pushed his leg out and stopped the door. He was stronger than I was and despite how hard I tried to close the door, I couldn’t. I sighed as he stepped in and closed the door behind him, acting as if my room was his.
I moved back, folding my hands on my chest. Hopefully, he was going to leave if I didn’t give him the audience that he desired.
“What are you doing here, Jack? I don’t remember summoning you.” I said, figuring that I could chase him off faster if I was rude.
I should have known that wasn’t going to work on him.
He laughed and moved closer. “I thought you would appreciate some good night wishes. Do you still have nightmares?”
“No, I don’t. Thanks for the thought so you can go now. I’m not sleeping soon though.”
“Should I come back to wish you goodnight then?” He grinned, looking around my room.
I winced and closed my eyes, knowing that I had shot myself in the leg with that. “No. This is enough. Goodnight, Jack. Please go.”
He turned to me with mock annoyance. “Don’t you know it’s rude to chase off your guests?”
“Don’t you know it’s rude to come unannounced?” I retorted. “Moreover, you are in my bedroom. Did you check the time before leaving yours?”
He chuckled. “What are you nervous for? What is wrong with a brother checking up on his sister? Are you expecting something else? What are you thinking of, sister?”
I blushed and shook my head. I wasn’t going to let him get to me. I shook my head telling him that I wasn’t thinking of anything. He didn’t believe me. Well, he wouldn’t ever have believed me regardless of what I said because he didn’t plan to.
He smirked and moved closer to my bed. He picked the book I was reading and read out loud from it. I gasped as I remembered the page that I was on and flew to his side to get the book from him.
As if he had anticipated my move, he smiled as he raised his hand up, getting the book away from my reach and continued to read from it.
“Adam stopped me from falling and I gasped as our skins made contact, his hand wrapped around my waist. I looked into his eyes as I held on to his shirt for balance and I couldn’t stop myself from falling. He felt the same way I felt and I didn’t blame him. The chemistry in the air was huge and I couldn’t deny the charge running through my veins. He leaned closer to kiss me, his eyes on my lips and I didn’t stop him. I didn’t want to as I wondered what his lips were going to taste like.”
I groaned. Of all days, why did I have to pick a romance book on the night that he came barging into my room?
“That’s enough, Jack.” I hissed at him, blushing.
He obeyed and I was both surprised and relieved that he dropped the book.
“Go, Jack.”
He made a move to leave and then turned back. “Not until I ask this question. Have you been kissed by a man, Mia?”
I gasped at his words, my eyes widening as I stared at him. I eventually regained my composure and frowned at him. “That is none of your business, Jack.”
He moved closer to me, his eyes focused on me and flicking to my lips. “I’m afraid that it is, Mia. I’m like the character in the book that you are reading. I want to know how your lips taste.”
“In your wildest dreams.” I snorted at him.
“No, baby. Right here in reality.” He grinned.
He suddenly pulled me closer and I gasped as his hands wrapped around my waist. I didn’t have much time to protest and break free from him as his lips came crashing down on mine.
He angled his head, kissing me with the passion that I couldn’t deny that he felt. He slipped his tongue into my mouth, teasing and stroking the edges of my mouth. I let out a moan as the kiss continued though I didn’t hold on to him or kiss him back.
Damn, that was hot. Girls didn’t throw themselves at him for nothing and I realized that he wasn’t being boastful when he said that he was the ladies’ man. He knew how to kiss.
My body was on fire and throbbed all over. I couldn’t remember ever feeling that way. How could I when I had never gotten intimate with any men? It was one of them who had taken away my virginity and ruined me for other men because I couldn’t get comfortable with men again.
At the reminder of that hateful night, I broke away from the kiss, wondering what I was doing. What was wrong with me? Why did I let him kiss me? I could have said that I had no choice when he kissed me but I didn’t have to let it go on for that long.
“Leave, Jack.” I growled, pointing at the door.
He smiled like one who had gotten what he wanted. He ran his tongue over his lips and blew a kiss at me. I scowled at him, showing him how disgusting I found his attitude.
“Good night, Mia.” He chuckled and left the room.
I winced and dropped on the bed, feeling ashamed of myself. I touched my swollen lips and was mad at myself because I couldn’t stop thinking of the kiss.
I avoided going out of my room too much for the next two days before I finally decided to get back to work. I couldn’t stay at home anymore. Jack had gotten the boldness to kiss me, I couldn’t imagine what else he was going to try out if I stayed. I didn’t want to stay here to find that out.
The day of my departure came and everyone said they were sad to see me leave. Mum and Albert made me promise to visit soon and I told them that I would. The boys told that they would always check up on me at work and wouldn’t ever be far. I wished that they wouldn’t.
They walked me to the car where the driver was waiting. Mum and Albert stayed behind talking while it was the boys with me, all of us walking at the same pace.
When they thought our parents weren’t looking, they slipped a necklace into my hand.
“What is this?” I asked, raising my head to glance at them.
“It’s a charm necklace.” Quinn explained. “You are going back to work and would be alone, away from our protection. This would protect you from the dark wizard and put our mind at rest that you are safe.”
“I don’t need it.” I said, handing the necklace back to them.
“We worry about you, Mia and you know that. The dark wizard can trace you with your blood that she got on her claws that day.” Jack said.
Their words made sense but I didn’t want the necklace. Working in the human world was my escape from the supernatural one that I was sucked into and using the necklace would remind me too much of my fears. I wanted to fight it and be free. Moreover, I didn’t trust the brothers that the necklace was only to keep the dark wizard away. What if I started to think of them and like them?
“Please take it.” John urged me.
“No. I think I will be fine.” I said and slipped into the car.
