Chapter 141
Revealed
Sarah’s POV:
I walked into Detective James’ office, my heart pounding in my chest.
I had rehearsed my story a thousand times, but I knew that one wrong move could mean disaster.
I took a deep breath and approached his desk, trying to project a confident and innocent demeanor.
Detective James looked up from the file he was reading, his eyes narrowing as he took in my stern expression.
“Sarah.” His face looked Stern.
“Take a seat.” He offered.
I sat down in the chair opposite his desk, trying to maintain my composure.
“What’s this about, Detective?” I asked, trying to sound calm and curious.
Detective James leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving mine.
“I’ve been investigating some discrepancies in your story, Sarah.” That felt like a huge blow.
“How do you mean, detective!” I asked him.
“It seems that you have been withholding information from me. Information that could be crucial to the case.” He looked deep in my eyes, like he was searching for something missing.
I felt a surge of adrenaline as my mind raced to come up with a response.
“I don’t know what you are talking about,” I lied, trying to sound convincing.
Detective James raised an eyebrow.
“Don’t play dumb, Sarah. I have evidence that suggests you’re involved with the syndicate. Evidence that could put you in a lot of trouble.” At this point, I was turning in between the thought that he was only trying to get me to talk, or he knew the truth.
My heart skipped a beat as I realized that he was closer to the truth than I had thought. I knew that I had to think fast, or risk everything coming crashing down around me.
I felt a surge of panic as Detective James’ eyes bore into mine, his gaze intense and accusatory.
“What did you do with my phone when the coffee spilled?” he asked, his voice low and even.
“This is it!” I thought.
I tried to think back to that moment, my mind racing to come up with a plausible explanation.
“I… I must have picked it up and put it on the table,” I stammered, trying to sound convincing.
Detective James raised an eyebrow. “Is that so? Because the surveillance footage shows you pocketing my phone and you walked out of this office with it.” He revealed.
My heart sank as I realized I had been caught in a lie.
I knew I had to think fast, or risk arousing even more suspicion. ”
I… I must have forgotten,” I stuttered, trying to play it off as a simple mistake.
But Detective James wasn’t buying it. His eyes narrowed, his expression skeptical.
“Forgotten? Or deliberately taken to prevent me from discovering the truth?” He asked.
“Or about your involvement with the syndicate?” He emphasized.
I felt a cold sweat trickling down my spine as I realized the gravity of the situation.
I was trapped, caught in a web of deceit and lies. And I knew that Detective James was not going to let me go without a fight.
Detective James’ eyes narrowed, his voice firm.
“You are an inmate, Sarah. You are not supposed to have access to phones, let alone make calls with a detective’s personal phone. What are you hiding?” He asked me.
I felt a surge of fear as I realized the gravity of my mistake.
I had underestimated Detective James’ scrutiny and now I was paying the price.
“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I stuttered, trying to maintain the charade.
But Detective James wasn’t having it.
“Don’t play dumb, Sarah. You’re in deep, and I’m going to find out what you’re involved in. You’re not the first inmate to try to pull the wool over my eyes, but you will be the last.” I felt heat wave go through my body.
He paused, his eyes boring into mine.
“You have two options, tell me the truth and cooperate, or face the consequences of obstruction of justice. The choice is yours.” I stood there hoping I convince him as he looked on.
I felt the walls closing in around me, my heart racing with fear. I knew I had to think fast, or risk losing everything.
Detective James’ face hardened, his voice firm.
“Very well, Sarah. If you refuse to cooperate, then you leave me no choice. I’ll have you placed in solitary confinement until you’re willing to talk.” Detective James said as I caught the shock.
“And let me make one thing clear: you won’t be getting any special treatment. You’ll be treated like any other inmate who refuses to cooperate.” He said.
“No privileges, no visitors, no nothing. Just you, alone in a cell, until you’re ready to tell the truth.” He continues.
He paused, his eyes glinting with a hint of steel.
“So, what’s it going to be, Sarah? Are you going to start talking, or do I need to make a call, and have you taken away?” He said.
I felt a chill run down my spine as I realized the gravity of my situation.
Solitary confinement was not a place I wanted to be, but I knew I couldn’t give in yet. I had to hold out, no matter how difficult it got.
I shook my head, trying to appear defiant.
“I’ve done nothing wrong, Detective. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Detective James sighed, his expression unyielding.
“Very well. Have it your way. Take her away!” He ordered.
“I won’t say anything, I won’t betray myself. I’ll never give them the satisfaction.” I told myself.
“They will never break me. I’ll hold on to my secrets, no matter what. I’ll endure the darkness, the silence, the loneliness. I’ll survive, I’ll persist. For my daughter’s sake, I’ll keep fighting.
I’ll find a way, I’ll find a way to escape, to outsmart them. I’ll wait for the right moment, the perfect opportunity. And when it comes, I’ll take it. I’ll run, I’ll hide, I’ll fight. I’ll do whatever it takes to protect myself, my daughter, and our future.
No, Detective James, no. You’ll never crack me. I’m stronger than you think. I’m a survivor. I’ve been through worse, and I’ve come out on top.
You think solitary confinement can break me? Ha! I’ve been alone in the darkness before, and I’ve emerged stronger.
You think you’re clever, Detective? You think you’re smart? But you don’t know me.
You don’t know what I’m capable of. I’ll outwit you, I’ll outmaneuver you. I’ll escape, and I’ll make sure you never catch me again.
So go ahead, throw me in solitary. Try to break me. But I’ll never give in. I’ll never give up.
I’ll never reveal the truth. I’ll take it to my grave, if that’s what it takes. I’ll protect myself, my daughter, and our future, no matter what it costs.
