Chapter 128
Haunted.
Chris’ POV:
I grunted in pain as I tried to come back to my world again and tried to open my eyes.
As I slowly opened my eyes, I realized I was in my own bed, surrounded by familiar walls and furniture.
But something felt off. My head was pounding, and my side ached like hell.
I tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness washed over me, forcing me back onto the pillows.
I took a few deep breaths, trying to clear my foggy mind.
“What happened?” I muttered hoping someone will hear me.
I racked my thought, trying to piece together the events of the previous day.
Elm street, the woman, the gun… it all came flooding back.
But how did I end up here? And why was I still alive?
I looked around the room, hoping to find some answers. But I was alone. No one was there.
I laid back and closed my eyes, trying to make sense of it all. But my mind was a jumbled mess, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was in grave danger.
As I lay in bed, I saw a figure walking towards me.
It was Jake. I felt happy at once.
He walked up with a concerned look on his face.
“Dude, how are you feeling?” he asked, sitting down in the chair beside my bed.
I tried to speak, but my voice was barely a whisper.
“What… what happened?” I asked.
Jake’s expression turned grim.
“You were shot, man.” He told me.
“In the alley. We thought we lost you.” He revealed.
I struggled to remember, but my mind was foggy.
“Who… who did it?” Jake asked.
“The woman!” I managed to say.
“I hope she has been caught!” I asked him.
Jake’s eyes narrowed.
“We are not sure yet. But we’re investigating.” He told me
I lay back, my mind racing with questions and suspicions. What happened in that alley? And who was behind it?
I took a deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts.
“I know Mom told me to stay away from it, but I had to do something, Jake. But Megan is still in the prison.” I said.
” I could not just sit around and do nothing.” I added.
Jake’s expression was skeptical.
“But you knew it was dangerous, Chris. You knew you were putting yourself at risk.” He said.
I nodded, feeling a surge of determination.
“I knew it was risky, but I couldn’t just give up on Megan.” I said.
“Hmm!” Jake sighed shaking his head.
I frowned, feeling a hint of defensiveness.
“Hey, I’m just trying to do what’s right. And I am not going to apologize for that.” I told him.
Jake held up his hands, a conciliatory
“I need you to be careful, okay?” He said, smiling when his phone rang.
As soon as he was done with the call, he turned to me.
Jake’s expression turned serious; his brow furrowed with concern.
“Chris, Mom is worried sick about you. She’s been frantic with worry, calling every hospital and police station in the city, trying to find out if you’re okay. ” He told me.
“But… I can’t let her see you like this.” He gestured to my battered body, his eyes filled with a mix of anger and sadness.
“She would freak out if she saw the state you’re in. She’d never forgive me for letting you get hurt like this.” He told me.
I nodded weakly in understanding. My mom had always been protective of me, always putting my needs before her own. I knew she would be devastated if she saw me injured and vulnerable, unable to defend myself.
“Okay, Jake. I understand. Just… just keep her away for now, okay? I don’t want her to see me like this. I don’t want her to worry any more than she already is.” I replied.
Jake nodded; his eyes filled with a deep sadness.
“I will, Chris. I’ll take care of her, and you just focus on getting better, okay? You just focus on getting your strength back, and we’ll deal with everything else later.” He promised me.
“Thank you!” I said with deep gratitude.
I immediately, felt a wave of exhaustion wash over me. I closed my eyes, knowing that Jake would take care of everything, and let myself drift off into sleep, the sound of Jake’s gentle voice and the beeping of the machines the last things I remembered.
I was deep in sleep when I heard horrible sounding voices from the window.
I was kind of scared, but I tried and limped to see what was happening.
My eyes fluttered open, groggily taking in his darkened room. The moon cast eerie shadows on the walls, making me feel like I was trapped in a nightmare.
But as I sat up, my heart began to race. Outside my window, a group of shadowy figures loomed, their faces obscured by the night.
They spoke in hushed tones, their words indistinguishable, but their gaze fixed on me with an unnerving intensity.
My mind raced as I threw off my covers and approached the window. The figures didn’t move or acknowledge me, their eyes remaining fixed on me with an unblinking stare.
My skin began to crawl, my senses screaming warning. I felt like an insect under a microscope, trapped and helpless.
Suddenly, one of the figures leaned in, their voice barely audible through the glass.
“Chris, we know what you did.” My heart skipped a beat. ”
What do you want?” I demanded, trying to keep his voice steady.
The figure straightened; their face still hidden in the shadows.
“You will find out soon enough.” They replied.
With that, the group vanished into the night, leaving me shaken and wondering what secrets they knew.
I stood there, frozen, my heart pounding in my chest, as the darkness outside seemed to be closing in on me.
My thoughts raced with questions. Who were these people? What did they want from me?
And what did they mean by what you did? I tried to shake off the feeling of unease, telling myself it was just a prank, but the memory of those unblinking eyes lingered, haunting me.
I wondered if they have to do with the woman whom I thought was Kayla, but I would not want to go that way.
I turned and I saw Jake sleeping peacefully close to me.
The sight of him, made my relaxed as I thought of my next move in action.
“I need to do something fast!” I said as I laid on the bed again.
