Chapter 74
The trail
Megan’s POV:
Chris has been more than a wonderful friend to me, sometimes I feel that he is just a guardian angel that was sent to me by God.
He is so amazing and protective that I could not have prayed for a much better person.
I asked for a writer, and I have been given more than just a writer, but also a friend.
I would not have been more grateful.
“I hope you now see how helpful Chris has been to you.” Jane startled me out of my thoughts.
“Yeah… now I understand everything he said from the onset.” I told her.
Chris saw the handwritings on the wall, and he did not hesitate to tell me.
“I am not going to lie, he has been more than a colleague!” I revealed.
“I am glad that you see it that way Chris and you stop being stubborn from now on!” Jane told me rolling her eyes.
“Thank you, Jane for everything!” I said hugging her tightly.
“I think it time to see what the news is saying!” I said reaching out to my phone.
“The news or social media?” Jane scoffed.
Reaching out for my phone as I scrolled through IG, I could see photos of me with the caption, ‘RIP’.
“What the hell is happening?” I screamed drawing Jane’s attention.
“What is the problem, Megan? Are you okay?” Jane’s voice echoed from the inner room.
“No!” I replied.
“I do not know what is happening around here… the news.” I told her.
“What does it say? Show me?” Jane said as she took the phone from me.
“Who could have done this? Spreading false news about you? Oh no!” Jane lamented.
“I need to know where this came from!” Jane said.
“Oh no!” I heard Jane exclaim.
“It is Lily!” She told me.
“I am not surprised!” I said casually when the bell went off.
“Are you expecting anyone?” Jane asked me.
“No… it could be Chris!” I said.
“No… it’s Asher!” We heard him say.
“Come in!” We echoed.
“Did you all see what Lily posted?” Asher asked us.
“Yeah, we did!” We replied.
“I will urge you not to come out to say anything or debunk!” He told us.
“Because they want to use this as a bait to get you out of your hiding!” He revealed.
“They must think that we are fools!” I said laughing.
“Yeah… so you just have to ignore them.” Asher revealed.
“I will just go get some groceries!” Jane told us as she left me and Asher.
It was getting late, and Jane was not home yet. What could be the problem?
Going to get groceries should not be more than an hour, if I am not mistaking.
“Have you heard anything from Jane?” I asked Asher.
“No!” He replied.
“Why? Are you worried?” He asked.
“I think she is going to be back soon, because I was stuck in traffic for a long time… so that could be the issue with Jane too.” Asher assured me.
It was getting dark, and I have not still gotten in touch with Jane. I have tried every means I could use but none is working.
Just when I was about to lose hope o got a call from Jane.
“Megan, it is me, Jane. I just got back from getting groceries, but I thought I was being followed and I was right.” Jane told me.
“Oh my God! This is not happening!” I exclaimed discouraged.
” I noticed a black SUV trailing behind me for a few blocks now… oh my God! I think they are still here. I am starting to get really scared.” Jane revealed.
What? Oh no, Jane! Who is it? Is it Kayla’s men? Did they find out about us?” I asked as cold shivers ran down my spine.
“I am not sure, but I think it might be. They have been tailing me for a while now, and I can tell they are trying to be discreet. But I am getting a really bad vibe from this. I think we need to be careful.” Jane said.
“Okay, stay calm. Where are you? I will come to you right away. We will figure this out together.” I told her.
“I am on Main St, near the park. But be careful, Megan. If it is Kayla’s men, they might be dangerous. We don’t know what they’re capable of.” Jane said.
“So, you can just remain home, and I will get myself out of this situation!” Jane urged.
“Do not worry, I will be careful. I will make sure to come prepared. Just keep moving and try to lose them. I will be there as soon as I can. And Jane?” I continued.
“Yeah?” Jane replied.
“Keep your phone close and stay on the line with me. I want to be able to hear what is going on and be able to help if needed.” I told her.
“Okay, got it. And Megan?” Jane said.
“Yeah?” I answered.
“Be prepared for anything. I have a really bad feeling about this. What if they are not just following me? What if they are trying to send a message to us?” Jane shrieked.
“We will cross that bridge when we come to it. Just focus on staying safe for now. I will be there soon.” I urged.
“Okay… okay. I will try to stay calm. But Megan?” Jane called again.
“Yeah?” I answered.
“What if they find out about us? What if they know we are trying to expose Kayla?” Jane asked with concern.
“We will deal with that if it happens. But let us not jump ahead of ourselves. One step at a time. First, we need to get you safe.” I assured her.
Asher offered to help but I advised him against it as it will be raising eyebrows.
“I will just make sure that I bring her to safety… and make sure I do not get noticed… trust me!” I told him.
“I will be fine!” I told Asher as he was unwilling to let me go alone.
I find Jane in a state of panic and fear, trying to lose the men who are following her. Jane is driving erratically, trying to shake off her pursuers, and is clearly distressed. I can hear the anxiety and terror in Jane’s voice as we spoke on the phone.
When I finally reached jane’s location, she finds her parked in a secluded alley, visibly shaken and on the verge of tears. Jane was breathing heavily, her eyes darting back and forth, scanning the surroundings for any signs of danger. She was clearly relieved to see me, and I embraced her as we held each other tightly as they try to process the situation.
I assess the situation, take charge, and helps Jane calm down, reassuring her that everything will be okay. I then help Jane gather her thoughts and come up with a plan to ensure her safety and take down Kayla’s men.
