Chapter 68
Success?
Kayla’s POV:
Megan has always thought she was so much better than me, with her perfect grades, her perfect friends, and her perfect life. But now, she is just like the rest of us – a pawn in Hailey’s game. And I’m going to make sure she stays there.
I remember when Megan started at our school… with Jane being out trainer she thought she was so much better than everyone else. She would look down on us, like we were beneath her. And then, she had the nerve to try to steal my friends, my boyfriend, and even my spot on the cheerleading squad.
“But now, the tables have turned. Hailey has her right where she wants her, and Megan is finally experiencing the pain and suffering that she’s caused others. And I’m not going to lift a finger to help her.
“In fact, I’ll do everything in my power to make sure she stays in this toxic cycle. I’ll make sure Hailey knows all about Megan’s secrets, all about her weaknesses. And I’ll make sure Megan knows that I’m the one who’s behind it all.
“Because, let’s face it, Megan has made my life a living hell for so long. She is ruined my relationships, and even my self-esteem. And now, it’s her turn to suffer.
“I know it’s not right, but I can’t help how I feel. I’m tired of being the victim, tired of being the one who’s always hurt. And now, it’s Megan’s turn to feel the heat.
“Kayla, how could you do this to me? How could you make me to hurt Megan and manipulate Miles? I thought we were sisters, not enemies. We were supposed to support and love each other, not use and manipulate each other for our own gain.” Veronica told me in tears making me roll my eyes.
“You were just as much a part of this as I was, Veronica. Don’t pretend like you’re innocent. You were happy to go along with it when it suited you.” I reminded her.
“Happy? You think I was happy to hurt people and ruin lives? You blackmailed me, Kayla.” Veronica said painfully.
“You threatened to ruin my reputation and my relationships if I did not do your bidding. I had no choice. And even when I tried to back out, you guilt-tripped me into staying in this toxic cycle.” Veronica continued
“Oh, poor Veronica. Always the victim, never the perpetrator. You’re just as guilty as I am. You could have walked away at any time, but you chose to stay.” I said.
“Oh, you are going to be homeless if you had gone against my wishes!” I said giggling.
“Guilty? You are the one who has been pulling the strings all along. You’re the one who’s been manipulating everyone. And now, you’re trying to pin it all on me? You’re trying to make me take the fall for your actions?”
“You were happy to go along with it when it suited you, Veronica. Don’t pretend like you’re suddenly morally superior. You’re just as much to blame for this mess as I am.” I told her.
“I was scared, Kayla. I was scared of what you would do to me if I didn’t comply. But now, I’m angry. I’m angry at you for using me, for manipulating me, and for hurting innocent people. And I’m angry at myself for letting you do it for so long.” I revealed.
“Save it, Veronica. You’re not fooling anyone with your crocodile tears. You’re just trying to save face now that the truth is out.” I yelled at her.
“I may have been weak before, Kayla. But I’m not weak anymore. And I’m going to make sure that you pay for what you’ve done. I’m going to make sure that you can’t hurt anyone else ever again.” Veronica said sternly, staring at my eyes.
“Hey!” I held Veronica back when she tried to get away.
“What do you want to do? Huh?” I asked her.
“In whatever you plan on doing, make sure that it does not ruin my work, else you will pay dearly!” I threatened her as she stared with frustration.
“You are so wicked and callous!” Veronica yelled at me as soon as I let go of her hands.
“That is just an impression, you will know how callous I am when you fall into my own trap!” I replied.
Just then, the sounds of sirens rented the air.
“What is going on here?” I asked as I got closer to the window to see what was going on.
“The police!” I whispered.
“Why are they here?” I questioned.
“Maybe, your hideous plans are out to the opened!” Veronica scoffed.
“Then you shut up because they might not be here for me!” I told her.
While I still spoke to her, there was a knock on the door.
“I told ya.. they are here!” Veronica said as she peeped.
“The police.” She whispered.
“Phew!” I took a long breath then went to meet them.
“Hi, officers!” I greeted them.
“How can I help you officers? I don’t know what this is about.” I asked them.
“Are you Miss Johnson?” They asked me.
“No!” I answered.
“She clearly does not fit into the description!” The other said.
“Yeah, but does she live here?” He asked me again.
“No, no!” I replied.
“I am so sorry, ma’am. We have been given the wrong address. We’re looking for Miss Johnson, but it seems we have made a mistake.” The police officer pleaded.
“Oh, dear! Well, I am glad it is not me you’re looking for!” I said chuckling.
“We will get it sorted out. Thank you for your time.” They said.
As the police leave, I breathe a sigh of relief, then I quickly pulled out my phone and dials a number.
“Hailey, it is Kayla. The police just showed up at my address, but they had the wrong information.” I informed her over the phone.
“Then, it does not concern is!” She replied.
“It does not matter. I think we need to be careful and lay low!” I told her.
“Got it, Kayla. I’ll take care of it. Don’t worry, there will not be any problem!” I said.
“Trust me!” Hailey said and cut the call
“Why are you staring!” I asked as Soon as noticed Veronica’s glances.
“Get out of here and get to work!” I yelled at her and got back to thinking about a better plan.
