Walden saw the fear boldly written on her face. From her previous tale, he knew and understood the reason for her reluctance. He hadn’t thought of asking for this before, but then with her persistence and all that’s been going on with him lately, he needs to know if there should be any reason at all to carry on with life, and Maggie here is the only one who can tell him that.
“You just said now that you would do anything…”
“Anything apart from that, sire. Honestly, I never expected that you would ask me that after hearing of my situation. Sire, please understand that I mean you no disrespect by refusing, but after what happened, I’ve promised myself to keep my powers buried where no one will ever find them. I don’t intend on breaking it so soon.”
“I know that you got in trouble the last time you used them. In fact, I understand your fears very well, so I am not offended at all. I won’t be offended even if you refuse me after this, but please, I am begging you to trust me. I am begging you not to see me as someone like alpha Grace, but the alpha who saved your life, who reunited you with your daughter, and who would do anything to keep you out of harm’s way.”
“I don’t want to read you a bad fortune, alpha Walden. Believe me when I say that I wish I could control these powers of mine. I wish I could freely tell you the good side of things that would happen to you.”
“The same way that there are good and bad fortunes, there are a lot of things that happen in life we can’t control, and that’s okay. I promise that I will not act like those who misjudged your gifts. No matter the outcome of whatever you say, I promise not to take it out on you and accept it the way it is. I just need to know, please Maggie… Don’t say no.”
His eyes. What was it about those eyes that made her forget the promise she made herself? Why did she find it so hard to refuse his request?
He repeated those soft words of his which made her reluctance fade with every second that passed.
“It’s okay, Maggie. You can trust me. I promise not to take it out on you; no matter the outcome. Just tell me what it is.”
Those words of his… They seemed to assure her so well. Could she trust him? There was only one way to find out.
She took a deep breath and took both his hands in hers, closing her eyes, and trying to find a path she could read. It took a while, and Walden was more than patient, letting her take her time, and then she finally did. Her eyes flashed, staring into the empty space in front of her. Then she began to speak; words that Walden should have somehow expected but didn’t.
“I hold great fear for you in my heart, Walden. You have the blood of many people screaming at you this moment. You trusted the wrong one, and now the wrong one is gone but you are still alive, suffering for both your mistakes. All of the souls you have wronged come to you in the form a nightmare, a person.”
Yes. Walden knows exactly who it is; Omega Conor. The reason why his sister, the only one who should have loved him, now hates him so much. The man whom he wrongly executed even while seeing truth at the back of his mind, all to protect someone he should never have given so much trust.
“How do I fix things? I want to make things right. I know I did wrong by killing an innocent man. I have no excuses to justify my actions. I just need his forgiveness to appease his spirit. How do I do this?”
“The spirit does not seek to forgive or to be appeased. It wants revenge! Blood in exchange for his own that was shed on the execution ground!”
“Please, Maggie. Search for me. There has to be something I can do. I do not want to leave this life now! There are still so many things I have to do! I have to know what will become of me at least…”
For the first time since she started, Maggie blinked. It was like she was trying to do what he asked. She was searching. She’d never been this aware of her surroundings during divination. What was so special about Walden? Suddenly, she saw something.
“There is light… There is…” she gasped, stopping her words.
“There is what? What is it? What did you see?”
Maggie then came out her state, placing her hand on her head as if she’d just been hit there. Her voice was also back to normal, and for the first time, she remembered everything in her vision clearly.
“What is it, Maggie? Is there something wrong?” Walden kept asking her.
“Um… Nothing. No, there’s nothing wrong, apart from the things I told you, everything else is fine.”
He could sense dishonesty in her words, and wasn’t pleased by this at all.
“There was something you were about to say before you stopped, something about light… If there is anything you are hiding, please tell me, Maggie. I need to know.”
She shook her head, “I am sorry, I thought I saw something then but it turns out I didn’t. The vision about the evil spirit was the only one I saw.”
“And what about that? Is there a way out of the nightmares? Now you know what I am going through. I’ve not had a good sleep in months because of this. I am begging you, Maggie. If there is anything you know, anything you think can help me, please don’t hold back.”
“I swear that I don’t know anything. I only read visions; I can’t solve the problems I see in them.”
Maggie was definitely hiding something, if not why was she unable to look him in the face directly as he spoke those words. Did she probably see something that had to do with her? Was that why she was scared to talk?
She got up then, her hands still quivering. “I would like to return to my room now, sire. The session is over, and I have given you what you asked. I am sorry I wasn’t able to offer any help as to what you’re going through.”
He took her hand, stopping her, “You only told me what had already happened. I thought your visions gave insight to the things that were to come. How come nothing regarding my future was revealed to you?”
