“We live in the lower town ma’am, we’re the commoners that make up the majority of the silver wolves.”
“Oh, I see.”
“Yes ma’am. So you see we do not even have any privileges like those living in the pack house apart from those of us who work here. Very few of us get few chances to meet with royalty like you.”
“And you would all like to meet your new Luna in person…”
“Yes ma’am. Just for once, all of us would like to meet our queen without fear of being kicked aside by the wolf guards whenever we approach you. We would wish for nothing more than a chance to dine with you and shower you with praises.”
“Ok then, I’ll take a walk on my own this evening without any of the guards escorting me, and then, I’ll visit the lower town to see you all.”
Leah’s eyes lit up then, of course this was an answer she didn’t expect. She didn’t know when she even started jumping.
“Oh really ma’am???? You’ll come??? You’ll come and see us on your own?”
Miranda nodded, “yes. I will. I too have wanted a chance to meet with my husband’s people… I think that this will be the perfect opportunity.”
“Thank you so much for your decision ma’am… But ma’am, even if you won’t have the guards by your side, you must at least have someone beside you when you leave the pack house. You can’t be walking the evening streets alone ma’am.”
She somehow already knew the next thing Miranda was going to say
“Ok then, would you like to do it then? Would you like to escort me after you finish your work this evening?”
“I’d be more than honored to, ma’am! I would even make sure to escort you back here after the party!”
“Thank you. So it’s arranged, you may be excused now, Leah.”
The servant girl bowed, heading on to pick up the disposable bag from the ground before she left. After thrashing the bag, she picked up her phone from her pocket and went to a secluded corner to make a private call. Before she dialed the number, she made sure to look around her surroundings, double checking to ensure that no one couldeavesdrop on her conversation. When the coast was clear, she finally made the call.
Ring-Ring-Ring
“Hello?”
“Hello uncle, it’s Leah..”
“How’s everything Leah? Did it all go according to plan? When will we be able to get the silver queen from you?”
So many questions all at once… “She’ll be leaving the pack house alone with me this evening, uncle. I’ve had her so convinced, she doesn’t even suspect a thing. You’ll be getting her tonight.”
**********
Evening time came, and alpha Damian returned to his quarters, surprised to meet his wife all dressed up.
“Where are you going?” He asked her.
“Oh! Welcome back dear,” she got up from the couch and went to hug him, but his attention was more focused on where she was headed than the embrace she was offering.
“I’m going for a short walk,” she replied.
“Where?”
“Close by.”
“Are you leaving the pack house?”
She thought of what to say. Trust was something she’d so strongly built with her husband these past few weeks they’ve been together, and she didn’t want to lie to him.
“Yes.”
“I’ll tell Renard to assemble an escort so…”
“No Damian.”
He creased his brow, “why??? What do you mean, no?”
“I want to go out on my own. I won’t take long I promise.”
“That will not be happening on my watch! Even if you are going to step out of this pack house for a second, I will not let you go out on your own.”
She took his arm then, staring straight into his eyes.
“When I first came into this pack house, I came as a prisoner, who had no right or choice to make as regards my freedom. But then I married you, and I became the queen of these lands. You stopping me from doing as I please now only means that the only difference between me now and the prisoner I was, is the title bestowed on me.”
“Miranda… I’m not stopping you from going out, I’m just saying you can’t do it on your own, especially at such ungodly time! Please understand that I’m only trying to protect you… The world out there is too evil…”
“I know about that world Damian, I’ve experienced it lots of times more than you can imagine, but here I am… Still standing…”
“Miranda please…. Trust me when I say that you can’t leave these walls on your own…”
“I too am begging you Damian, I’m begging you not to cage me! I’m begging you to let me experience things for myself! I’m begging you not to keep surrounding me with your guards all the time…”
She would’ve kept on going, if not that she saw how much her words hurt him. She quickly apologized.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you…. I just… I don’t want to feel like that locked up prisoner I once was before.”
“Miranda…”
“I’m not going alone if that’s what you want to hear! I’ll be taking one of the servants along with me, and she’s even promised to bring me back. Please Damian, please…. Let this not cause a rift between us….”
Sighs, “you know I’d hate for anything that I could’ve prevented to happen to you.”
“Yes, I know, but I promise you, nothing will happen to me. I’ll be back soon and then we can make love like we always do.”
He slumped on the couch frustratedly, “when will you be back?”
“I’ll try to make it as quick as possible. Probably in an hour.”
“Please Miranda, promise me you’ll return back safely. I’ll never forgive myself if anything happens….”
She quickly grabbed his face and planted a small kiss on his lips to shut him up, “stop saying things like that, Damian. Of course, nothing will happen. I promise I’ll be back for you, my love.”
And that was all she left him with; the assurance that she’d be back.
