Chapter 64
One good turn
Megan’s POV:
“Whoa! I think you need to do some remembering.” I said calmly.
“There is not remembering to do Megan… that entire folder is filled with lies.
“The photos!” I said and showed him.
“Look Chris, look!” I said.
“There is a whole lot here!” Annoyed and distraught threw the folder across to him.
“A handwritten letter from you to Hailey, professing your love and devotion, then receipt from a jewelry store, showing a purchase of an expensive necklace with a note ‘For my love, H’ … seriously?” I asked him already tensioned.
“And followed by that, is a printout of a conversation between you and Hailey, discussing your secret meetings and plans for a future together.” I continued.
“I just fed up that I believe you and all you have to say.” I snapped at him.
“This is not the truth!” Chris tried to defend himself.
“Room 314, where we first made love” rings a bell?” I asked him with my hands akimbo.
“Our little secret.” Lily said seeing photo of Chris and Hailey together and chuckled.
My eyes widen as I realized the extent of Chris and Hailey’s relationship. I felt betrayed and hurt, wondering how Chris could keep this from us and the rest of the us.
“Chris, how could you? How could you lie to us like this?” I yelled.
“Megan, I… I don’t know what to say. This is a lie. But please, you have to believe me.” Chris begged.
I looked on in shock and disbelief, unsure of what to say or do next.
“You know what? I will leave.” I said and walked out.
Walking back to the office, I saw Veronica run out immediately she heard footsteps.
“I knew it. I knew she was involved in this somehow.” Lily said as I tried to figure out what happened.
“What is it, Lily… say something!” I asked her.
“I walked back into your office, determined to get to the bottom of things when I saw Veronica sitting at your desk, typing away on your computer. But as soon as I entered, Veronica quickly closes the laptop and tries to act nonchalant.” Lily explained things.
“Then why did she run out again?” I asked her.
“Then… you ask her!” Lily said.
“Veronica, what were you doing?” I inquired.
“Oh, just working on a project, Megan. What’s up?” Veronica responded nervously.
“Save it, Veronica. I saw you whispering to Hailey earlier, and now I see you frantically closing my laptop. You’re involved in this, aren’t you?” I asked her.
“How did you see that?” Lily asked me.
“Some other time, Lily!” I waved it away.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Megan. I swear, I’m just working on my own projects.” Veronica replied.
“Don’t lie to me, you have you own laptop for that. I’ve seen the way you look at Chris, with admiration in your eyes. And now I see you’re helping him cover his tracks. You need to tell me the truth.” I tried to let her spill the truth.
Veronica: (tearfully) “Okay, Megan… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt anyone. Chris just asked me to help him with some things with is work, and I didn’t think it was a big deal. He said it was just some extra work, and I wanted to impress him… I didn’t know it was wrong.” Veronica begged as she fell on her knees.
“But still, I will love to know why he gave that to you… let’s go!” I ordered her.
“Oops. Chris just left.” Lily said.
“Without telling anyone about it?” I inquired.
“Then, let’s go to his house!” I told Veronica and we proceeded.
I and Veronica arrive at Chris’s house, ready to confront him. But when we enter, we were surprised to see Hailey sitting in the chair, a smug look on her face.
“Well, well, well. Look what we have here. The dynamic duo, ready to take on the world.” Hailey said with a smirk on her face.
“Hailey, what are you doing here? Or … I am not even here to see you.” I added.
“Oh, Megan. You’re so naive. Chris wasn’t having an affair with me. I was just helping him with his little problem.” Hailey said put of nowhere when she was not getting any attention from me.
“What problem?” I asked her in confusion.
“Chris was being blackmailed, dear. And I was helping him take care of it.” Hailey bragged.
“Blackmailed? By whom?” I asked her.
‘That is the million-dollar question, isn’t it? But let’s just say, it was someone who had a lot to gain from Chris’s downfall.” Hailey shrugged.
“Oh no… it was you, wasn’t it? You were the one blackmailing Chris!” I realized.
“You’re so quick, Veronica. Yes, it was me. And I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn’t for you two meddling girls.” Hailey said with so much seriousness.
“You are disgusting, Hailey. Using someone’s secrets against them like that.” I yelled.
“Desperate times call for desperate measures, Megan. And I was not even his secrets.” She revealed.
“You’re not even sorry, are you?” I became fed up.
“Sorry? Why should I be sorry? I’m the one who’s going to come out on top in this situation.” Hailey said and laughed hysterically.
“Not if I have anything to say about it, Hailey. You’re going down for this.” I vowed.
I pulled out my phone and dial a number, ready to report Hailey’s actions to her firm but Hailey’s smug expression falters for a moment, before she regains her composure.
“Go ahead, Megan. Report me. But you will be the one who’s left looking like a fool.” Hailey moved.
Hailey pulls out a folder from her bag and hands it to me. I opened it, and my eyes widen in shock.
“Where did you get this?” I asked her.
“Let’s just say, I have my ways. And with this information, you’ll be the one who’s left with nothing.” I was shocked to my bones.
“Wow!” I muttered silently.
“Hailey, you may have underestimated me, but you’ve also underestimated Veronica. And together, we’re going to take you down.” I defended myself.
“That’s right, Hailey. You see, I’ve been playing along with your little game, pretending to be naive and clueless. But really, I’ve been gathering evidence against you.” Veronica replied.
“Wait. What are you talking about?” I asked Veronica.
“I will tell you later!” Veronica whispered.
“You’ll never be able to prove anything. I’ve covered my tracks too well.” Hailey yelled at us.
“Oh, I think we will. You see, Veronica here has been secretly recording our conversations. And with this evidence, we’ll be able to expose your blackmail and manipulation once and for all.” I said without being sure of it.
“You can’t do this! I’ll sue you for defamation!” Hailey threatened.
“Go ahead, Hailey. But I think you’ll find that the evidence is against you. And besides, I have a few tricks up my sleeve too.” I shrugged.
“This isn’t over!” Hailey said and stormed out.
