Chapter 61
The mentee.
Chris’s POV:
Lost in thought, pondering on what Hailey told me, when Megan’s voice jolted back to reality.
“You look lost?” Megan told me looking into my eyes, like she was looking for something which has gone missing.
“I am okay. I do not just know if Hailey is telling the truth or not!” I said staring into space as Megan watched.
“I was shocked by your outburst!” I said as I took my seat.
“I could not just stand there and watch you do nothing, if I have not stepped on the headlines would have had our names suggesting and insinuating the unknown.” Megan said as she sunk into the chair.
“You should not bother about whatever she said about the child, she is just trying to get you back to her.” Megan advised and I agreed.
“So, what is going on with you?” I asked her.
“For the first time in my life, I would be having a mentee.” Megan revealed as I looked her in surprise.
“I feel that good, you will be having a mini you.” I smiled at her.
“So, who is she?” I asked Megan who was more than willing to talk about her mentee.
“A fan! I got to meet her after my fight with Kayla.” Megan explained happily.
“She would be with me tomorrow; would you love to see her?” She asked me.
“Yeah! Yeah! I mean, why not?” I inquired.
“Fine, see you in office tomorrow. I have to go now!” She said and took her leave.
The next day was not a busy one for me as I only got prepared to see Megan’s mentee.
After some hours, a young girl walked in. She looked fierce on the outside, but I guessed that that was just a facade.
“Meet my boyfriend, Veronica!” Megan introduced.
“I know him. I mean, who would not know your boyfriend?” She said with a smirk.
Veronica said as we both laughed it off but noticed how uncomfortable she was at some point.
The meeting came to an end, and I was going to tell Megan, what I felt about her.
“Is this your first-time meeting?” I asked her as soon as the girl left.
“No, why do you ask?” Megan questioned me.
“Something feels off about her.” I told her.
“Maybe because you are just getting to meet her for the first time.” Megan revealed.
“We have a meeting prior to this. I witnessed where she stayed a net with her friends over me, that made me fall in love and made me eager to mentor her,” Megan told me.
“Megan, can we talk about your mentee? Properly? I asked her.
“I mean I know you are eager to mentor her, but I think you careful.” I suggested.
” I mean, you should be cautious.” I added as I noticed her mood changed.
“What do you mean? I think she must be talented for her to be looking up to me.” Megan disagreed with me at once.
“I do not think she means any harm, but she is talented and deserving of my support! I am just paying it forward, helping someone who reminds me of myself when I was starting out.” I explained.
“I understand that, but I’ve noticed she’s getting a lot of attention and credit for your ideas and work. Are you sure she’s not taking advantage of your kindness?”
“Stop being delusional Chris!” Megan said at once.
“We only trained for not up to an hour and you know all of this already?” She asked.
“Can’t you see how she trained earlier but was feeling on top?” I asked her.
“Oh, no, she was just being grateful and respectful. She would never do that! Besides, I am not worried about getting credit I just want to see her succeed.” Megan told me.
“You just began, and this is what you have to say?” I inquired.
“I understand your intentions, but you need to protect yourself and your career. What if she’s not as innocent as you think? What if she would be using you to get ahead?” I asked another set of questions.
“Are you starting to get jealous? Megan asked as I watched in unbelieve.
“What do you mean?” I asked her again.
“You are just jealous because I’m succeeding and you’re not! You do not understand the industry or my relationships! My mentee is a talented individual who deserves my support, and I won’t let you or anyone else make me doubt that!” Megan said as I noticed Jane watching is from a distance.
“Megan, I’m not jealous I’m concerned. I have seen how much time and energy you are willing to invest in her, and I do not want to see you get hurt. You deserve better than to be taken advantage of.” I calmly revealed.
“I know what I’m doing, and I don’t need your advice. My mentee is a friend, and I trust her. You are just being paranoid and unsupportive.” Megan insisted.
“It is not like I needed your support anyway!” Megan fired at me.
“Fine, Megan. But remember, I warned you. If things go sour, do not say I didn’t try to caution you. Your blind spot for your mentee is going to be your downfall.” I said as Jane tapped softly on the back.
“Get out! Just leave me alone! I don’t need your negativity in my life!” Megan said angrily and stormed out.
“Calm down, you know Megan can be stubborn when she wants something her own way!” Jane advised me.
Megan stormed off, still blind to the potential risks, while Jane sighs in disappointment while I stood concerned for her future, and wonders if I should have pushed harder to make her see the truth.
Well, that didn’t go well. I knew Megan was a handful, but I didn’t expect her to react so defensively. I am just trying to help her succeed, but she’s making it difficult. Her ego and pride are getting in the way of her potential. I have seen it before… talented people who can’t take criticism or feedback.
I guess I am one of them, because Jake advised me not to go see Hailey that night, but I did anyways.
I feel pity for her and hope this does not go the way I envisaged it to be.
I hope she calms down and reflects on her behavior. I am not trying to destroy her career, but she needs to learn to work with others and take constructive criticism.
I will give her some space for now and try to approach her again when she has cooled down. Maybe then she’ll be receptive to feedback, and we can move forward. But if she continues to resist and refuses to grow, I’m not sure how much longer I can keep working with her. It’s frustrating, because I know she has potential, but her attitude is holding her back.
I was lost in thought when I heard Megan scream from a far off, like she heard a terrible news.
“What is the matter with her?” I asked myself and ran off to see what was going on.
