Chapter 69 Don’t blink, Twinkle

Book:t8 Published:2024-5-1

The gentle voice bewitched the girl.
Twinkle sniffed and walked toward the window with her phone. She looked at the courtyard and saw a streetlamp standing alone not far away. There was nothing else.
She wiped her tears and was somewhat discouraged.
She knew that her uncle couldn’t be like those characters from romance novels, appearing under her window when the heroine cried and was desperate, standing handsomely.
Impossible!
But—
“Twinkle, don’t blink!”
His voice came from the phone again, soft like a dream.
She opened her eyes wide and stood there in confusion. The soft night wind stroked her heart and dried the tears on her cheeks.
But, a huge billboard extended from the tall streetlamp towards her window, as if it stretched out its wings!
There were bright lights in the billboard, completely lighting up a huge HD photo!
“Wishing Patrick Lee and Twinkle Simpson a happy engagement!”
The subtitles she saw were what he was muttering on the phone. And this line of subtitles was under the HD photo. The people in the photo were actually Patrick and her!
She was nestled in Patrick’s arms, her eyelashes hung shyly while he half embraced her, with warm lips printed on her forehead.
The man was affectionate and luxurious; the woman was smart and gentle. The photo felt sweet and warm no matter how someone looked at it.
What was even weirder!
In the photo, Patrick’s legs were standing up!
The top of Twinkle’s head reached Patrick’s chest, right at his heart!
She covered her mouth and her tears fell. “God! How did you get it out?”
Patrick explained on the phone. “When you came out of the Nelsons’ house after lunch yesterday, you were drunk and snuggled on my chest. I took the picture, and then passed it to people for quick art processing. I printed it out. I was thinking that when you get up early tomorrow morning, you will see when you open the curtains. But you were crying so badly, I didn’t know how to coax you.”
As a result, this surprise was exposed in advance.
Twinkle wiped her tears, no longer choking, but was in a complicated mood. “My father said that I’ll be getting engaged with Dawn next month.”
“You will not!”
“I, how do you know I won’t?”
“If you will, you won’t be crying this badly. If you will, you won’t be worthy of me loving you wholeheartedly. If you will, you won’t be Twinkle.”
He said all that in one breath then changed the topic and said, “Don’t think too much, rest early. Didn’t I say that, as long as you give me a ray of sunshine, then you can leave the rest of the world to me. I’ll be responsible for making it light up!”
“What can you do?” Twinkle looked at the billboard in front of her. The more she looked at it, the more flustered she became. “If you are like this, my father will definitely become angrier.”
As for how to deal with his future father-in-law, Patrick seemed to have another opinion. “Be good, go to sleep. You are not tired after sitting on the highway for a day today?”
“Tired, but can’t sleep.” Twinkle kept thinking and finally made up her mind to ask him. “Uncle, my father said you are too complicated. Even if you are healthy and you stand in front of us, he doesn’t approve of our relationship. You, what are you doing in private? You seem to be quite rich.”
“You know, I’m just an ordinary businessman, not that complicated.”
“Uncle, you are not doing something illegal, right? Like drug trafficking, smuggling, secretly making weapons and things like that?”
“What is in your little head?” Patrick smiled. “Don’t worry, I am a serious businessman. As for what I do, I will tell you later. I have something else to take care of. You sleep first. I’ll come to find you in your dream in a little while.”
“But, this billboard is too big and so high, I’m afraid our entire community will know. That’s not good though?”
“Twinkle, don’t think about anything now, don’t do anything, just stay at home and relax. Just relax. I’m responsible for the rest of it. You have to believe me. You are bound to be mine!”
She blushed, and she believed him inexplicably.
After saying goodnight to each other, she stood by the window for a long time, and finally she couldn’t bear to close the curtains. She lay on the bed looking at Patrick’s face in the photo and slowly closed her eyes.
Downstairs, the first person who discovered the photo on the billboard was the Simpsons’ housekeeper.
He was taken back and immediately told Mrs. Simpson. Mrs. Simpson came out to have a look and told Mr. Simpson. In the end, Dawn went out as well.
Dawn twisted his eyebrows. “Their engagement has already been cancelled yet he still has to put this up. What is he thinking of! If he’s a man, he should be able to let things go. What’s the point of coming back to bother her?”
Mrs. Simpson looked at Mr. Simpson and said, “Should we go up and tell Twinkle and ask her if she knows what’s going on?”
“No!” Dawn interrupted Mrs. Simpson immediately. “Aunty Simpson, Twinkle is already I fell asleep. Things like this will only increase her worries, so let’s not tell her. I’ll think of a way to get that thing down.”
Mrs. Simpson sighed and nodded. “True, Twinkle has nothing to do with Patrick anymore. It’s better to not tell her this kind of thing.”
Thinking about what her daughter experienced these past few days and how scared she must’ve been, Mrs. Simpson felt sorry that she was taken away by Patrick. Now that the engagement has finally been cancelled, it’s better for Twinkle to be freed from Patrick as soon as possible.
Seeing what happened, Mr. Simpson was displeased. “I’m going to management to bring this thing down.”
Mrs. Simpson nodded. “You hurry up! It’s just been put up so not too many people saw. If we dragged this on, then our Twinkle’s reputation will be ruined!”
“I know. I’m going now!”
“Uncle Simpson! I’ll go with you!”
Just as Mr. Simpson was about to leave the yard, Dawn’s figure chased after him.
In the night, the two men hurried to the property manager’s office.
It happened that the staff’s working hours had passed, and there was only one guard on duty. As soon as Mr. Simpson entered, he scanned the dark buildings with heavy eyes, and said dully, “The streetlights in this community have never been set up with billboards. Why did they appear suddenly? Where is the power switch? Do you guys know?”
It was nighttime. No one would see if they turned the light off.
The guard shook his head. “I don’t know, I’m just a guard.”
Mr. Simpson sighed, very depressed, but not prepared to leave. He thought and tried to find a solution.
“Uncle Simpson, do you have a ladder at home? We can just go up and cut the wire of the billboard or find two large sheets to cover it! We can wait until the staff come to work tomorrow morning to take care of the rest!” Dawn suddenly said.
