Although the music was loud, Zack could hear her stomach growling.
Nancy tightly grabbed her stomach trying in vain to keep it from growling. It was truly embarrassing.
She sneaked a peek at Zack who was driving. He doesn’t seem to flinch. So, what happens in the television soap dramas is all just make-believe. If this were to happen in the movies, the lead actor would immediately take the actress for supper. But this driver beside her didn’t even blink an eye. It was obvious to her that she didn’t have the life of a lead actress.
They were almost reaching Nancy’s home and Zack stopped by the roadside. Nancy looked around, home was two blocks away and she didn’t want to walk home. So she asked, “We’re not there yet… why did we stop?”
Zack turned off the engine and said to Nancy, “Don’t get off, just wait for me, I’ll be back soon.”
He got off and ran towards a 24 hours convenience store. In a flash, he came out with a bag.
He placed the bag onto Nancy’s lap, started the engine, “Here, grab a bite. You’re hungry, aren’t you?”
Nancy hugged the bag of snacks and she felt that her empty stomach was suddenly filled with warmth. So, it appears that she has a chance to become that lead actress in Zack’s life after all. She wanted to take back all those words that she had just said in her heart.
The car stopped at the entrance to the condominium. Nancy hugged the bag as she exited the car. Her head dipped as she looked into the car saying, “Thanks for sending me home, have a safe drive home. And…” She raised the bag of snacks and said, “Thanks for the goodies.”
Zack seeing that Nancy was back to her old self, raised an eyebrow and said, “It’s late, don’t eat too much. You’ll have trouble sleeping if you’re too full. If you don’t rest well, you won’t be able to concentrate at work tomorrow.”
Nancy replied in embarrassment, “Oh, okay.”
Nancy stood at the gates and saw him backing up and then driving off. Suddenly the car stopped and then reversed towards her. “I’ll pick you up at eight-thirty tomorrow morning. It’s on my way. If you want to take the reserved lift, then bring some breakfast for me.”
As soon as he finished, he sped away.
Nancy looked in the direction that he left and thought to herself. A breakfast will buy her a ride on the reserved lift. That’s worth it!
She happily took the bag of snacks and went up to her apartment. It’s already ten o’clock. Dad and mom must be asleep by now.
Little did she expect that as she opened the door and tiptoed quietly into the apartment, both dad and mom were on the sofa.
“Why so late? I called but you didn’t answer?” Dad demanded.
Mom saw the bag of snacks in her arms and asked curiously, “What’s in your hands?”
Nancy thought, she didn’t do anything wrong, there’s nothing to hide. She stood upright and walked towards them and placed the bag onto the coffee table and sat on the sofa.
“I worked overtime tonight. My cell phone ran out of battery and died. These were bought by Zack. I haven’t had dinner yet. End of report.”
Dad and mom were prepared to give her a thorough questioning but was suddenly dumbfounded by her detailed and honest reply.
Nancy looked at her speechless parents, “Dearest Mom and Dad, do you have any more questions? If not, I’ll go and take a shower, I’m so tired.”
She grabbed the bag and wanted to walk away but dad reached out to stop her. “In that case, Zack sent you home again? Does that mean that both of you now are …”
“We are co-workers, he is my superior and I’m just a junior staff. And…” Nancy baited dad and dad asked excitedly, “And what?”
“And we are friends.” Nancy poured cold water and dashed mom and dad’s hopes. “Okay okay, go and sleep.”
Nancy laughed when she saw the disappointment in her parent’s eyes. She certainly hopes that they are a couple, but, it appears that it’s a long road ahead.
