Eion’s POV
I really hate her.
Nosy.
Loud.
Annoying.
Irritating.
Blatant.
Annoying.
I guess I said that again…
And Pretty…
Wait what?! Pretty? More like a hag!
Admit it…
I won’t because she isn’t.
Well, if you say so…
How dare she compare me to a robot?! No one has been that blunt with me that before! I really hate her guts. Really!
These few days, I’ve noticed something’s always on my mind. No… Someone.
I hate to admit it, but I always think of her… Why?!!
Every time her face pops up in my head, I push her away, do you see? She’s evil! She’s messing with my head!
I remembered the conversation at ‘Sarah’s Gowns’…
“Hey bro, you okay?” Dax asked, to which I only nodded absently.
Leroy cracked a goofy smile once he followed my gaze. “Well, who’d have known?” He grinned, “I think our friend here is in love!”
I sent him a death glare, but it only silenced him, the silly grin still remained in place.
“With who?” Dax asked, exclaiming suddenly when Leroy nodded at her, “Oh, dude! My hunch was right! You like her!”
“I don’t!” I glared, but they were still grinning ear to ear.
“Keep saying that to yourself,” Leroy says.
“You like her, you just don’t know it.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me! I don’t like her, not at all! If ever, it’s hatred.”
“Really?” Leroy smirked.
I stared at them deadpan as they started laughing.
“Whatever you say…” Dax said, deepening his voice for effect, “but remember, there’s a thin line between love and hatred. For sure that hate you are feeling will turn into love. And before you know it, you’ll be trapped. And you won’t be able to escape until you accept it.”
Pshh. Nonsense.
The words still haunted me. What did Dax mean? I wasn’t in love that was for sure. I’ve had many flings, but why would hating someone bother me so much?
I was jarred out of my thoughts when the door opened and Luke appeared, greeting me, closing it behind him before he came to stand next to me.
He’s one of my closest cousins.
“What’s up? You seem to hang out here for most of the day,” he smiled. It’s clear he’s happy.
“I’m fine. Guess I just wanted to think for a while. What about you?”
“Fine,” he answered, his smile turned into a grin.
“You look so happy today, is it about a girl?” I asked even though I knew what might be the reason.
Last night I’d invited him to play a few video games and I could see he was texting someone alongside. Just out of curiosity, I peeked into his phone when he was trying to get popcorn from the kitchen.
I’d been angry when I’d seen it was Snow; first my friends and now Luke, she seems to charm everyone!!!
I was slightly disappointed at him when I noticed that his face had turned crimson red.
“Yeah…” He hesitated, but told me nevertheless, still smiling, “It’s Snow. I asked her to be my girlfriend yesterday.”
No surprise there.
“Did she say yes?” I asked absently, trying not to show how much I hated her.
“No.” He replied.
I sighed in relief. Wait, what? I didn’t even know I was holding my breath… He didn’t seem disappointed though…
“Not yet. But we’ll talk about it soon…” He trailed off.
“Cool,” I answer absently.
Suddenly the door slammed open, and guess who walks in. Snow the evil, wearing denim and a black T-shirt… Wait, did I just check her out?
I shook the thoughts away before realizing I missed something she said, not that I cared.
“It’s alright,” Luke said, turning to me, “I just need to talk to Snow for a moment, I’ll be back in a while…”
“You can talk here, I was leaving anyway.” I walked towards the doorway.
Wait, did I just give them my spot so they could flirt with each other? I mentally drag a palm across my face. Dammit!
I glared at her for ruining this spot for me, bumping into her as I walked away.
I heard Luke thank me as I walked through the corridor, trying to recover from the electricity that’d shocked me when I’d touched her.
Psh! That was just the cold air.
I was pulled into a trance as painful memories surfaced…
“Mommy, let’s buy some ice cream!” A younger version of me said.
“Eion, you’ve eaten enough to spoil all those pearly white teeth.” Mom informed.
“No, I haven’t! I can’t get cavities. Don’t you know I’m a superhero?” I said proudly, imitating and posing like one.
“Really?” my mom said. I nodded.
“Well, then, if you are a superhero, would you promise mommy that you will be a superhero no matter what? Even if mommy’s not there?”
“But where are you going?” I ask curiously, being the naive seven-year-old I was.
She smiled sadly. “Promise me Eion, promise you’ll be a good boy,”
“I promise! Now let’s buy ice cream!” I said excitedly.
I hadn’t known she’d meant it. Being the naïve boy I was, I didn’t know that she was making me a promise because she’d had cancer.
Two days later, she’d died, without me knowing why until now.
I felt so stupid to have asked for ice cream instead of her. I hadn’t even said goodbye…
I’d just woken up, all excited because it’d been my birthday, only to be greeted by my crying father. And I still hate myself for that.
If only I’d known…
That day I lost the only woman I loved. Every day, I wish I could turn back time. I guess that’s life… No matter what happens, it forces us to move forward.
