Since Kara was able to talk about what had happened that night, James thought that she must have overcome her fear.
To verify his thoughts, he brought her to the study, turned off the lights, and observed her reaction.
Now, her little fingers were trembling as she hugged him and buried herself in his arms in fear. She was even shivering when she spoke.
Judging from her reaction, she was still haunted by the disaster that night.
“Kara, it’s okay. Open your eyes slowly. You’ll be fine after you get used to the darkness.”
He tried his best to persuade her and patted her back while encouraging her.
But Kara’s eyes were tightly closed. She kept dodging.
“Uncle James, did you do this to me on purpose?”
“Kara, I’m sorry to let you face the danger alone.”
Now that she had figured it out, James didn’t want to keep the secret. He scooped her up to hold her at eye level.
“Look at me, Kara. I will face the darkness with you.”
Hearing his gentle voice, Kara faltered. She rubbed her cheek against his, trying to smooth it over by being good.
James was not in a hurry. He waited for her patiently.
Will said he should be patient if he wanted to help her. He should wait until she opened up to him.
So, no matter how long it would take, he would wait for her.
If she wouldn’t face it, he would do everything he could to lighten up her world.
But this was a potential problem. When he was not around her in the future, he was afraid that she would cry in fear once she was in the darkness again.
He would rather she cried in his arms.
After a long while, Kara knew she couldn’t run away from it anymore, so she slowly opened her eyes.
Under the faint moonlight, she saw James’s handsome face.
Neither of them spoke at that moment. In such a silent night, they could hear only the heartbeat of each other.
Only then could Kara slow down her racing heart.
“Kara, kiss me.”
Kara landed her hands on his cheeks, looked up, and kissed his face.
In return, James kissed her on the cheek and pressed his forehead against hers.
It was as if he was speaking to her silently.
He’s here. Don’t be afraid.
“Are you okay with it?”
“I guess. But my legs are weak.”
Staying in his arms, she was brave enough to open her eyes. But she was not brave enough to look anywhere else. Her limbs were numb.
James put her legs down, took out his phone, and opened the flashlight.
“Come on. Take a few steps.”
Unwilling to do it, Kara grabbed his hand.
“Don’t worry, Kara. I’ll be with you. Take a slow step.”
Kara could only grit her teeth. Cold sweat broke out in her palms because of the anxiety.
Her toe slowly landed on the ground. She took a step forward, feeling as if she was stepping on the clouds. It was so unreal.
After the first step, she took another.
To adapt to her speed, James moved forward bit by bit like a baby learning to walk.
Despite the baby steps, he knew Kara was trying her best.
The two walked to the door of the study together. He opened the room. It was bright outside the study.
When Kara walked out of the study, he felt as if he had walked into another world.
“How do you feel?” James asked.
“I don’t want to go to your study anymore.” She pouted and complained.
James was at a loss for words.
He glanced sideways at her, picked her up, and went back to the study room.
“Ah! Uncle… Uncle James, I was joking.” She grabbed his arm again, refusing to be part with him.
“You will walk by yourself this time.”
“No!”
Kara refused decisively and clutched his big hand.
“Stay with me.”
“Kara, I’m behind you. Be good, I’ll watch you!” James steeled himself, shook off her hand again, and nudged her forward.
Kara looked back at him nervously several times, but James pretended not to notice it. He looked down, staring at her still feet.
Kara clenched her fists. Out of her instinct, she wanted to close her eyes. But at the thought that she needed to overcome her fear, she opened her eyes and walked towards the door.
She was in a hurry as if she was trying to run away from something.
James didn’t know what to say.
The young lady ran like a scared kitten.
When he walked out of the study, the little woman rushed back to her room. James curled his mouth.
If he wanted to catch her, he didn’t even need to go to her room at all. He had his way to bring her to his arms.
James took out his phone. The phone and computer were connected. He found the map of her bedroom and pressed a button.
The woman hiding in the bedroom ran out and rushed into his arms immediately.
“James, damn it!”
He had just turned off all the lights in her bedroom.
James rubbed her head. His palms were warm and soft. A smile was tugging at his face.
“I’ll train you tonight. Let’s play the game of walking in the dark.”
“But… James, I’m tired. I don’t want to play anymore.”
Kara was not so happy when she was picked up by the man. She patted him on the shoulder, trying to break herself free.
But her little punches on his shoulder did no harm at all. He didn’t care at all.
“Kara, your hand is injured. Don’t do that to yourself.”
The two walked to Kara’s bedroom. He held her against the door, lowered his head, and pressed his lips on her pink one. The kiss was gentle.
At first, it was chase as he was figuring out the shape of her lips. After she got used to the man’s lips on her, James deepened the kiss.
“Kara, hold me tight.”
In the darkness, his low voice rang in her ears.
Almost subconsciously, Kara followed his orders. She put her slender, fair arms around his neck and returned the kiss.
Her response was unskilled and cautious.
She was like a green apple that had just been picked from a tree, with dews still on its smooth skin. If he took a bite, the taste would be crispy and sweet.
When the man let go of his hand on her waist, Kara’s legs hooked around his strong waist.
“James.”
“Huh?”
His soft kiss landed beside her ear. It was so soft that she felt like she was a treasure in his arms.
“Thank you. I like the night now because I have you with me.”
James was at a loss for words.
The little woman was a little bashful after she finished the words. She rubbed her cheeks against him, not daring to look him straight in the eye.
The vibe was so perfect that James knew he would be sorry for his arrangements tonight if he did nothing.
“James.”
“Yeah.”
“Will you be with me for the rest of your life?”
Aroused, Kara held his handsome face and asked in a silly manner. The hot sweat on his face dripped onto hers.
“Kara, I’m yours for the rest of my life.”
Kara fell silent.
Neither of them knew what would happen in the future or how long he could be with her.
But he did not care about that. As long as she was still around, he would be with her.
The next day, James went to the company in a good mood.
During the meeting, everyone noticed their CEO’s excellent mood. Anyone in need of the CEO’s signature hurried over.
Then Nolan got a call from the head of logistics that the new employee was absent.
Nolan looked calm. After hanging up, he walked into James’s office.
“Sir, Jenny was taken away by John.”
