Chapter 20 Unlikely Conversation

Book:Alpha's Puppet  Published:2024-5-1

There was one thing he hated so very much, and that was an intrusion to his privacy. And, his sister made it a point to do that every single time. He was sure it was because of how he’d gotten his title that made her feel it was her birthright to behave as such.
Alpha Jax picked a dark pen from his table, thinking of the various ways he wanted to tell her that off. Only for Lily to hit his desk with a slight bang. He glared at her, as he looked up at her face, and was a bit taken aback that she was equally glaring at him.
“What exactly is your problem?” She snapped.
He raised a brow at her. “I should be asking you about that sister. Your attitude these days is far from commendable. I deserve some respect from you, no matter what,” He snapped.
“Respect?” She scoffed. His glare seemed to go deeper. “Have you thought that you actually don’t respect yourself or the title you hold?” She shot back.
“Mind your tongue,” He warned.
A knock sounded, and Lily quickly schooled her features, as she settled down on the plush seat. Alpha Jax leaned on his chair, tussling his hair slightly in a bid to appear cool.
“Come in,” He grunted.
Raven pushed a mop into the office, and she bowed to the Alpha, and then his sister. Her hands were visibly shaking. “I was told to clean your office,” She informed him.
“Get on with it then,” He said rudely. “And, be sure to be done in five minutes,” He added.
No one said a word, as Raven went to work cleaning the place up. Alpha Jax used the opportunity to check the paperworks. Being an Alpha was not as easy as it seemed. It came with a lot of time and effort. That was something that was excruciating at best.
“I will take your leave, Alpha,” Raven said politely.
He grunted in response as she made her way out. Lily turned to face him, her eyes bored into his, and somehow, he sighed. His sister was the only one who knew how to get to him.
“Jax, I’m worried about you, ok?” She said quietly this time.
“You don’t need to be,” He snapped. “I’m sort of busy, you may leave,” He said coldly.
Lily flipped her hair across her shoulders. “I won’t. This attitude of having sex-slaves needs to go. This wasn’t how we were brought up Jax. Have you ever thought that an enemy could use this against you and practically bring you down?” She snapped.
Alpha Jax placed the pen carefully on the table. “I’m one of the most feared Alphas in the werewolf clan, so why do you think that I would be stupid enough to put myself in such a situation?” He scoffed, kicking his chair as he rose to his feet, walking toward the cabaret.
Lily’s eyes followed him as he poured a shot of whiskey in his glass. She shook her head, at his oversized confidence. It was laughable.
“You…”
“Don’t repeat what you did here today. I love my privacy, and you all should know this. I know you always find a way to step out of line, but…”
“You just said I stepped out of line?” Lily asked, amazed. “You know, I can’t believe this is what I get for looking out for you. I would have said you can rot with your group of whores, but I wouldn’t because of the damn blood tiles,” She grumbled, rising to her feet.
Alpha Jax gulped the shot in one drink, not turning to face his sister who was slowly retreating from his office.
“You know what?” She asked halfway through the door. “Overconfidence kills, and it would kill you if you don’t put it in check.”
Alpha Jax slammed the glass down, and a growl shot out from him. Lily glared at his stiff back, and saw herself out of the room. Alpha Jax slammed his hand on the wooden desk, and caused a dent to appear there.
“No-one can bring me down. I’m not Alpha Jax for nothing,” He boasted.

The episode in the kitchen earlier this morning replayed once more in Ava’s mind. She picked her nails subconsciously, as her eyes settled on Benjamin’s. His gaze revealed nothing, and she wasn’t sure if it was he was playing it safe or he actually meant trouble.
“Why would you ask me that?” She asked offhandedly, as she settled the dryer on the table.
“Because, it’s my job to make sure things are ok around here,” He stated honestly, unflinchingly.
His answers made her feel better. He was honest at least. Being the head of the sex-slaves must come with some responsibilities. Though, she wasn’t sure what to keep stored inside or let out. He could go over to the Alpha and expose everything she said to him.
“Well, –” She started, still unsure of what she should tell him. “You always said the Alpha was perfect, so I’m not sure what to tell you. So, it doesn’t seem like gossip,” She said easily, as she picked up hair-drier once more.
He smiled. “Yes, I did that. But, this is important because the Alpha never asks for the company of his bed warmer the next day, and also, he doesn’t want them getting initiated so fast either,” He informed her airily.
“Wait,” Ava said, dropping her dryer back down. “How do you know that? I didn’t tell you anything about that. And, oh my God! I need to send a maid to the Alpha’s office. I totally forgot about that,” She said with a sigh.
Benjamin blew his fingers. “Well, Ava, you don’t need to worry about the maid stuff. I’ve taken care of it. And for the initiation, Alpha Jax informed me about it. That doesn’t answer any of my questions though. It seems to me, you’re deviating from answering any of my questions,” He said easily.
“Not at all,” Ava denied immediately.
She turned back to the mirror, drying off her hair. “Well,” She started, using her fingers to unlock the tangles. “It wasn’t so pleasant. We didn’t do anything,” I said dryly.
“What?” Benjamin exclaimed in a high-pitched voice.
Ava shrugged, regretting then that she had told him anything.
“Then, why are you being initiated? You failed to please the Alpha, so I don’t see how you have any business staying here. You should have been thrown out,” Benjamin stated in disbelief.
This time, Ava slammed the hand-drier down. ‘He is my mate, that’s why!’ Screamed in her head, but never made its way to her tongue.
“I’d like to be alone, please. If you have any objections, you take it up with your Alpha. I don’t make decisions for him,” She mumbled stiffly.
He walked seductively to her. “I’m sorry. I was just shocked. I would let you have your rest. You don’t make-up or do your hair during initiations. And, it would be nice if you mingled with the rest of the slaves. You could learn a thing or two about satisfying the Alpha,” He pointed out.
She gave a curt nod, but refrained from saying anything. She was still annoyed, and that sorry wasn’t doing it for her. It sounded like an afterthought, and she really wanted him to leave.
