Ava cocked her head to the side. She couldn’t believe that Benjamin had followed her all the way to this place. His face was bare of makeup from what she could see. But, it only made him more beautiful, and not ugly.
“Though, I’m dying to know what you were thinking of setting out of the pack house like this, I think it’s more crucial for us to leave this place. We’re not safe here.” Benjamin informed her softly, his tone devoid of judgment.
In her wolf form, Ava could not let her words out. And since she hadn’t completely been enchanted into the pack, she couldn’t mind-link him either. So, she bobbed her big head twice in understanding.
The howl sounded again. This time it was closer to them. She moved backwards, her eyes catching the shocked expression of Benjamin. It meant one thing, they’ve been surrounded.
A gray wolf came suddenly from the left side of the forest. It was moving towards her at such an alarming speed. And, the worst was it towered over her. Ava steered her wolf to the left, her left paw slightly raised in order to defend herself if the worst came to it.
Benjamin jumped off the ground, then transformed into his wolf. He moved so quickly, standing between Ava and the impending wolf. He howled at the animal.
The animal tried to slam itself on Benjamin, but got himself injured. Benjamin easily used his paws to knock the animal’s foot. It went back in panic and howled deeply into the night. More wolves made their appearance at that very moment. It was as if they were waiting for a signal. It was a bit disheartening.
Benjamin howled once more. One of the dark wolves stepped closer. He eyed us both, then without warning, transformed into a human. He was bristling in maleness and he wasn’t ashamed to show it off.
“Benjamin, is that you?” He queried.
Benjamin shifted back to his human form. He was grinning as he pushed his hair back. Without ado, he stepped in front of Ava, shielding her despite his playful attitude. He lowered his lips to her ears, whispering, “No matter what happens, don’t change back into your human form.”
He turned to the stranger. “Yes, Max, it is I.” He accented.
Max glared at him. “If you want to have fun with the slut, take her to a brothel, not the forest. Man, Grey almost harmed you. If I didn’t recognise your wolf, there is no telling the harm I would have caused you.”
“Right,” Benjamin said sarcastically. “I’m not a pussy, Max. You should know that by now. Now, what are you doing here?” Benjamin snapped.
Max shook his head. “You’ve never changed. What I’m doing is none of your business. Does your master know you now swing the proper way?” Max shot with a question of his own.
Benjamin placed a hand on his hip. “The proper way? You’re insulting me Max, I hope you know that. And, I do not talk about my master. I would love to take my girl back to the pack, where she belongs. So, tell your boys to stand back.” He took a step forward. “And, one more thing, tell Shane to stop spying on me! I’m not his, ok?” He snapped.
Max sighed, placing his hands on his masculine chest. “We were not spying on you. But, you’re a coward. I mean, you took the easy way out, leaving your lover to turn into a slave.” Max said softly like he was actually praising Benjamin.
Ava could see the veins on Benjamin’s hands. He was beyond annoyed. She didn’t understand half of what they were talking about, but she knew it was taking its toll on him.
“You don’t get to judge me, Max. You don’t! You don’t know half of what went down, so just shut the fuck up.” There was a purse. “Look, tell your boys to stand down, and it would do everyone a lot of good if you stop coming here, ok?” He snapped.
The gray wolf howled at him, and the rest of the wolves followed suit. Ava howled back at them to show them that Benjamin wasn’t alone. He had put his life at risk for her, so she couldn’t just watch him and do nothing. She wasn’t built that way.
“It’s ok boys,” Max said easily. “We’d meet again Ben, and when we do, it wouldn’t be so easy to walk away like you’re doing this night.” Max warned gravely.
Benjamin rubbed his hand across his face. “Time will tell,” He said shortly.
He shifted back to his wolf. His paws moved backwards, which meant he wanted Ava to be in front first. Ava stepped in front of Benjamin, and they began a laborious walk back home. She realized now that she’d gone too far into the forest.
She’d almost put Benjamin in trouble. Whatever had happened there hadn’t been right. Those people knew Benjamin, and for some reason, they were planning something huge. When they got closer to the pack house, she stopped her movements, and went back to human form. Benjamin followed suit because he was directly behind her.
She walked over to a branch, and sat down carefully on the shrub. “Who were those people Benjamin, and what do they want? Why do I feel like they’re up to no good? I think we should alert the Alpha,” She said in a rush.
Benjamin palmed his thigh. “Ok? And, then what are we going to tell him? How do we explain going that far into the forest? In case you don’t know, we don’t just go into the forest for any reason. It’s a problem.” He gritted out.
Ava swallowed hard. “I didn’t know,” She whispered.
“Well, now you know.” He looked around consciously. “We need not tell the Alpha anything for our own good, ok?”
She nodded. “Ok, I won’t.” He walked away from her, not answering any of her questions. He was definitely hiding something from her.
