“Let’s put aside if you have done anything wrong to our family. Look at you! How dare you treat me like this?” She was stunned as I grabbed her by the collar and it took her a while before she got over the shock and slapped my hand away.
She had wanted to slap me in the face again, but maybe worrying that she was no match for me at the thought of how aggressive I had been just now, she didn’t do anything but shot me a piercing glare. Then she walked to the telephone angrily and made a call.
Taking a deep breath, I calmed myself down and walked back to my room.
I found it particularly ironic when I saw my wedding photo with Zhao Dong on the wall. With a self-deprecating smile on my lips, I dialed Zhao Dong’s number.
Although it was an indisputable fact that he had an affair with Xiao Yue, I still wanted him to explain it to me.
The phone went through but was hung up immediately. A short while later, I received a text message from him, which said he was busy for the moment after perfunctorily soothing me.
I put my phone away with a sneer. In the past, I would have believed him without hesitation.
But now, I had lost faith in him.
When I was still in a trance, I suddenly felt burning pain on my face. Only then did I notice my cheeks, which had been injured by my mother-in-law, Wang Yanfen, ached under my tears’ irritation.
Being angry and aggrieved for my tears, I kept wiping them off my cheeks stubbornly until I stopped sobbing.
Suddenly, I heard someone banging on the door. “Jinx, get out! Your parents want to talk to you!” Wang Yanfen roared outside.
With that, she stomped back downstairs to the living room.
My heart sank when I heard that my parents had arrived, but I still went downstairs after smoothing my clothes briefly.
“Dad! Mom!” Since Wang Yanfen was there, I greeted my parents emotionlessly.
Wang Yanfen immediately shot me a glare with disgust before she fixed her gaze coldly on my father, Lin Weihao, and my mother, Zhang Yue.
“As her parents, how did you educate your daughter? Why is she so ill-bred? I only reproached her a little and she began to attack me!” Wang Yanfen roared angrily, as if she had been grievously wronged.
I could not help but sneer inwardly. When I looked up, Zhang Yue suddenly slapped me in the face.
It seemed that her slap made my originally red and swollen cheek look worse. I stroke my face and found there were traces of blood on my fingers.
She didn’t say anything after slapping me, instead she turned to Wang Yanfen and said coldly, “I’m only her step-mother and that’s all I can do. We’ll scold her privately in a way that she deserves.”
Hearing that, my father nodded indifferently without even looking at me.
I wasn’t surprised at his reaction, for this had always been the way he treated me.
Feeling a twinge in my heart as usual, I turned my head slightly and looked out the window.
Wang Yanfen seemed to be pleased with Zhang Yue and Lin Weihao’s attitude towards me. She gushed to them and kept on bitching about me.
Although she didn’t swear as badly as she had, she wasn’t much better.
My parents still nodded slightly in response to her words, as if they were two indifferent onlookers.
With a broken heart, my eyes turned reddish, but finally, I managed to hold my tears back.
I didn’t hear what they said afterwards and I only knew that the three of them ended their conversation with satisfaction.
After they had settled with my mother-in-law, my parents turned to leave without even saying goodbye.
They only glanced at me for a few seconds throughout their stay.
Finally, Wang Yanfen asked me to go back to my room. As soon as I closed the door, I received a short message from Zhang Yue. “You’d better play along and be the obedient Mrs. Zhao!”
