CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT.
Adele drove back home with mixed emotions. She was seriously angry at the fact that Danielle attempted to play the victim in everything that had happened when it was in fact because of her that she had a miscarriage.
If Danielle had not organized an urgent meeting that night, she(Adele) would not have fought with Jamal that night and he would not have pushed her to the ground. Everything that happened was Danielle’s fault and Adele hated the fact that she was trying to wiggle herself out of it.
Nevertheless, she felt relieved that for the past year, Jamal had had nothing to do with her. Rumor had spread countless times in the country that Danielle and Jamal were dating, but Jamal never confirmed any of those rumors because they weren’t true.
Adele meant everyone she had said to Danielle back there. She was going to make sure Jamal did not end up with Danielle.
When she arrived at the building where her apartment was located, she drove into the underground parking lot, where she parked her car in her spot and got out of it. She opened her boot and was about to take out her grocery bags from it when she heard a familiar call her name.
“Adele!” The voice sounded very familiar and Adeke tried to figure out who it belonged to. It was the voice of a woman. An elderly woman and it had been a while since she heard that voice. Her heart began racing in her chest when she finally put a face to that voice.
It was the voice of no one else, but her mother-in-law, Aliya Dominick!
She quickly turned around to confirm and she was right. Her mother-in-law was standing at a distance, in an Akimbo posture, looking at her with disdain, just like she always did.
“Mum…”
“Call me that one more time and I will rip out that miserable tongue of yours from your mouth. Foolish girl!” Aliya threatened as she charged towards Adele who was terribly frightened at that moment.
She knew how much Aliya hated her and how much she was willing to get her out of her son’s life. If she had come all the way to her apartment to confront her, she must have come prepared.
“Mum… I mean, Mrs. Dominick. What are you doing here?” She asked, trying to sound as confident as she could be despite the fear that was boiling in her heart.
She did not want to show the woman that she was scared of her because she knew that would only give her more courage to humiliate and even hurt her.
Aliya stopped on her tracks and laughed hysterically at the question Adele just asked her.
“What am I doing here? As if you don’t know already!”
“Mrs. Dominick, I honestly don’t know why you are here.” She lied.
Of course she knew. Her mother-in-law was obviously there to warn her to stay away from Jamal. The same thing Danielle had done a while ago at the parking lot.
She was indeed giving the women a very hard time.
“Well, since you have refused to admit that you know why I’m here, I will tell you.” She said and Adele smiled internally.
For some odd reason, she enjoyed it when they told her with their own mouths to stay away from Jamal. The desperacy in their words amused her and gave her some degree of satisfaction she could not explain.
“I don’t know what it is that you want from my son and I don’t care to know. All I want is for you to leave him the hell alone!” She warned and Adele snorted as she folded her arms over her breast. She leaned on her car just like she had done in the parking lot when Danielle was ranting to her to make herself more comfortable. “When you had that pathetic miscarriage, I was happy and when you left the house, I was even happier. I thought you were out of his life for good, but it seems you are back. I need you to stop going after my son!”
“You seem to be misinformed on this matter, Mrs. Dominick. I am not the one going after your son, it’s the other way round. I don’t want anything to do with Jamal, and have told his that countless times, but he doesn’t want to accept to that and he keeps doing things that will bring us close. You really have no right to warn me off him when he is, in fact, the one to be warned off me!”
“Shut the hell up, you impudent freak! My son would never chase a lowlife like you. You have a hold on him and that’s why I’m asking you to let him go. You are not worthy of my son, Jamal. He needs to be with someone who’s in the same social status as him. Not an orphaned freeloader!”
Her words jabbed Adele’s heart violently, tearing it into pieces and causing tears to well up in her eyes, but she refused to cry in front of Aliya.
She blinked her eyes hard to prevent the tears in them from welling down and gave Aliya a confident look.
“You know my ultimate prayer? It’s that your daughter Shannelle shouldn’t have a mother-in-law like you. You are a heartless woman, Mrs. Dominick and I bet right now God is regretting his choice of letting you have two very brilliant children. You should be ashamed of some of the things that come out from your mouth. I was carrying your first grandchild, yet you call my miscarriage pathetic. How do you call yourself a mother, when you find delight in the fact that another mother lost her child? Just how?” Adeke asked and Aliya went speechless.
She had no response to give her because of the guilt that was eating her up from within.
“If you have nothing else to say to me, please leave before I call security or worse still the owner of this building!” Upon hearing that, Aliya huffed and walked away.
A stubborn tear rolled down Adele’s right cheek, but she quickly wiped it away and forced a smile.
“She’s not worth it, Adele. She’s not worth your tears.” She encouraged herself as she opened her boot to get her grocery bags out.
************************************************
Adele had made up her mind not to tell Jamal all that had happened, but after thinking critically, she decided that it’ll be wise to let him know that his mother and Danielle were terrorizing her. She didn’t want to wait for things to escalate before she told him what was going on.
She picked up her phone from the kitchen island and searched for his contact in her contact list, when she found it, she stared at it for a while, contemplating whether to call or not.
Jamal was a very busy man and it was midday. She knew he was probably in a very important meeting or signing documents or doing some other work related stuff, so she put the phone back down. As she turned to leave, her mother-in-law’s words echoed in her mind and she quickly picked up the phone and dialed the number without overthinking.
The phone rang for a while, but finally got answered.
“Adele.” Jamal called through the phone and without warning, Adele burst into tears.
She had acted strong in front of the two women who confronted her so they wouldn’t feed on her weakness, but the truth was that their words hurt her really badly.
“Adele’s, what’s wrong?” Jamal asked, alarmed. “Are you at home? Just tell me so I can come over.” Jamal panicked.
“No Jamal, there’s no need for you to come over.” She said, still in tears.
“Then why are you crying?”
“It’s just that, I’ve had a really rough day.” She cried harder, almost hiccuping.
“What happened today, sweety?” Jamal asked as calmly as he could. He knew Adele was not a dramatic girl. If she said she had a rough, then indeed she had a tough day. “You can tell me about it.”
“Your mum and Danielle. They both confronted me today.”
“What?”
“Yeah…” sniffled tears. “Danielle confronted me in the driveway at the grocery store, while your mum met me in the driveway at the apartment building. It was really scary Jamal.” She cried even harder and Jamal felt blood boil in his veins.
The last thing he ever wanted was to see or hear Adele cry. He knew how menacing his mum and Danielle could act at times. He was positive that they really scared Adele with their words and actions… Actions…
Speaking of actions…
“Baby, please tell me they didn’t hit you.”
“They didn’t.” Adele denied and he heaved out a sigh of relief.
“Good. I’ve heard you love, I will talk to them and I will make sure something like this never happens again. I promise.”
“Please do, I was really scared of what they were going to do to me.”
“There’s nothing they can do to you. I promise I’ll sort this out.”
“Alright then. Thank you. I should leave you now.”
“I’ll call you when I’m done with what I’m doing.” He said and hung up.
A sly smile appeared on Adele’s face as she held the phone close to her heart.
She was very sure of the fact that the Dominick mansion was going to be hot that night and for Danielle, she was going to get the scolding of her life from Jamal.
That was all Adele wanted.
