Regina was feeling uneasy. Hannah despised her so much that even when she looked at her more closely, she was miserable. Since today is Martin’s family banquet, there must be many people who have established good acquaintances with aristocratic families as well as those who have business links. How could Hannah take the initiative to invite her to such an event?
“Click…”
A charming and opulent aura rushed at the face as the door was slowly pushed open. Regina’s frail body had been buried in the mob. She stood motionless as a man not far away approached her with steady steps, no, walked towards the hall.
Mandel was dressed in a grey-black suit custom-made by a reputed Italian tailor to match every curve of his physique. The glittering bespoke cufflinks on the cuffs made every attempt to embellish his tall and straight torso. He had a gorgeous face and deep, uncaring eyes, as if he didn’t feel anything.
He was dignified, regal, and mysterious, with slim arms that were naturally perpendicular to his side. One couldn’t help but be restrained in the face of his intimidating atmosphere.
He was as dazzling as a star that shines alone in the dark night, and the other guests at the banquet who were only bright and lovely were suddenly eclipsed.
Cecily and the old man standing behind her caught Mandel’s attention. His brows were slightly lifted, and a smile filled his long and narrow eyes: “Mr. Green, you have arrived. Please treat this as though it were your own house.”
“Many thanks!” The old man was full of vitality, and his smile added wrinkles on his face layer by layer: “Mandel, you are very thoughtful. These days, my granddaughter is bothering you. It’s fine if you don’t mind her being obnoxious.”
Cecily, who had been smiling beside the old guy, reddened slightly and fiercely shook the old man’s arm…
Regina returned her gaze, inexplicably sour. She shook her head at the end, only thinking she was ridiculous. They were a good match. They could be described as a natural couple. Cecily also stayed in Martin’s house with dignity, which was unusual for her.
She was invited as a guest or as a hostess, which was obviously not the case for a woman like her who had been brought back by Mandel.
Unconsciously, her right hand caressed her flat abdomen. Others couldn’t see that a little life was quietly growing up here, but Regina could.
The sour feeling in her heart grew stronger, and her child was doomed to be separated from her as soon as he was born. His father had married someone else, and the sight of Mandel entering Cecily’s room late at night broke her heart.
Regina thought she was hilarious. What kind of platform did she stand on to have this thought?
“Huh? Isn’t this Regina?”
A strange voice full of surprise and exploration suddenly appeared beside Regina.
She raised her head in amazement and saw the face of an unfamiliar middle-aged woman.
She was dressed in a police uniform, as if she had just returned from a mission. The woman’s shock turned to astonishment after seeing Regina raise her head, followed by a slightly surprised tone.
“It’s really you. Why are you here?”
The other party appeared to recognize her. Regina turned her head sideways and carefully searched her mind, but she couldn’t find any similarities with the person in front of her.
She couldn’t recall seeing this person before, and she couldn’t place the tone of her sudden familiarity.
She developed an inexplicable dislike and fear of people wearing police uniforms after serving two years in prison.
Regina waved apologetically, turned around, and wanted to leave as a touch of paleness crept onto her not-so-good-looking face.
Regina’s wrist was quickly grabbed by the woman in the police uniform. Her eyes shone with wickedness, and her face was still full of smiles: “Regina, don’t you remember me when you’re all grown up? I looked after you while you were in prison!”
The woman’s unmasked voice echoed throughout the living room. When they heard the word “prison,” the group of people who had just had a good conversation turned around and stared at the two people very sensitively.
Regina smirked. She snatched the woman’s hand from her wrist and said, “You’re wrong.” She needed to get out of there quickly.
This was the Martin family’s house. Her very existence was disgraceful, let alone attracting attention at this time.
She didn’t want Mandel and the Miller family to suffer as a result of this.
She didn’t want to embarrass herself in front of everyone.
Unexpectedly, the woman’s hand clasped harder and harder like eagle claws, but Regina didn’t break free. Regina’s frown deepened as the number of onlookers grew. She was clearly upset.
Regina struggled for a while, clearly annoyed: “I’m not familiar with you. Please relax. Besides, I’m not in the mood to chase you down right now.”
When the woman heard Regina’s words, her face flushed with embarrassment. She shook Regina’s hand sarcastically and said, “Oh! You still can’t get rid of your bad temper after two years in prison? You’re not who you used to be! Since you’ve become a guest of Martin’s family, you obviously don’t care about me, the warden.”
“Warden Jones, what’s the matter? Why are you so upset?” Hannah entered the room in her usual dignified manner, holding a wine glass. When she saw the woman with the surname Jones, she smiled and separated the two.
“I’m not sure what Miss Miller did to offend you, but this is Martin’s house. Take it easy and try not to be angry with her.”
Regina snorted coldly, knowing Hannah had no good intentions. It turned out that she had this intention!
Is it possible for a warden to attend Martin’s family gathering?
On the surface, Hannah’s remarks were intended to help her escape the siege, but they instead made her and the Miller family the target of public criticism.
Sure enough, there were many whispers around as soon as Hannah’s words were spoken.
“Ah? Has Miss Miller ever been incarcerated? She has been in prison for two years. How could someone like that be invited to the Martin family gathering?”
“That’s correct. I’m not sure what rude meant when she sneaked in. How could the Martins invite someone like that?”
“Did you hear what I said? She appears to be a member of the Miller family. Do you know who the Millers are? Which Miller family could possibly teach such a poor lady?”
