In the room.
Regina laid on her back on the bed, staring at the spotless white ceiling and the monotonous CFL bulb.
She shifted her gaze to the table and noticed an album. She extended her hand and took a closer look at Marina’s beautiful and meticulous face.
The windows were wide open, and a chilly breeze slanted in, mingled with light rain. The hem of the curtain was damp, but Regina closed the window hastily.
It was the third day after her mother had vanished.
It was the third day after her mother had gone missing.
Regina gradually fell asleep, and there were still small tears in the corners of her eyelids.
At this time.
Mandel has previously made a couple home-cooked meals. It was already nine o’clock in the evening, according to the clock.
“Knock-knock…”
He walked over and knocked gently on the door.
But no one responded.
Mandel cocked his brow slightly. He knocked many more times, but no one answered, so he forced the door open.
Regina curled up like a kid, showing a delicate and white half face and a white neck, as well as slightly protruding shoulder blades behind her.
“Whew.”
A cold breeze blew through from outside.
Mandel cocked his brow slightly. He grabbed up the comforter and draped it over her, then slammed the window shut and sat on the edge of the bed.
“Mom…”
Her lips twitched slightly.
“Where the hell are you, Mom? I really miss you…”
He looked down somewhat after hearing this. He reached out and gently removed the photo album from her arms.
A youthful and gentle girl and a young woman stood together in a green field in the photograph. With an innocent and cheerful smile, the young girl stared ahead. The young woman had simple lips and a weak grin…
“Where are you, Mom?”
Regina’s eyelids quiver slightly, and a crystal teardrop fell from the corner of her eye.
Mandel couldn’t help but reach out and wipe away the teardrop, his heart a bit irritated.
He could hear her quick, heavy breathing. He noticed an unusual blush on her face and thought something was amiss.
He stretched out and caressed her heated forehead.
Mandel felt a little tremor in his chest. He appeared a little agitated, with a dull light in his eyes. He instantly took out his phone, his voice frigid.
“Come here in ten minutes…”
Soon, the doctor came over and explained the precautions.
“Don’t tell anyone about your coming here.”
Mandel said coldly.
“Yes.”
The doctor was taken aback. His eyes glowed with skepticism, but he nodded in accord.
It was past late when the doctor left.
The eyes of Mandel were slightly fatigued. He approached Regina, whose face had gradually reverted to normal, and he felt slightly reassured.
Regina mumbled in her dream just as he was about to leave.
“Mandel…”
There was a hint of ecstasy in his eyes.
“I despise you, Mandel… I’m not interested in remaining by your side…”
The man’s smile hardened unexpectedly. There was some wrath in his eyes, but they were mostly filled with despair.
Her words slashed through his heart like an ice pick, and it was excruciatingly painful.
He couldn’t help but think of the past as he stared down at Regina. Deep in his pupils, there was a tinge of agony.
The sun shined brightly in.
Regina had no choice but to open her eyes. She awoke with a pounding headache, and when she stood up, she moved too quickly, causing the bedding to slip off her body. She felt a strange touch on her towel-covered brow.
Did Mandel help her?
Her eyes were surprised, and there was a warm stream flowing through her heart.
She stepped outside and glanced around the tight and damaged flat, but she couldn’t find Mandel.
Regina couldn’t help but sigh with relief as the large stone in her heart seemed to be removed.
A bowl of noodles and a glass of hot milk were already placed on the table.
Regina’s eyes were wide with surprise, and she nearly believed she was mistaken. This was a significant departure from his previous behavior.
Regina was not polite. She had already satisfied her hunger by eating noodles and sipping milk.
Just as she was about to set the table, she noticed a small note pressed beside the bowl out of the corner of her eye.
The handwriting was vigorous and powerful.
“I’ve already started making breakfast. Remember to consume it if you’re hungry. You must eat for the sake of the child…”
She was unwilling to look any farther. She laughed cynically as she clasped the note in her fingers.
All he did was for the child in her belly.
Regina, stop dreaming redundantly.
The light in her eyes dimmed completely.
“Knock-knock…”
Suddenly there was a sharp knock on the door.
Regina’s swaying thoughts were cut off. She gathered her thoughts and stepped over to the door.
“Regina.”
A familiar voice rang in her ears.
Frank was dressed thoughtfully, with a Patek Philippe on his hands, which seemed out of place in this dark and cramped flat.
“Dad…”
Regina couldn’t help but yell. His hair was gray, and his brows were far past their prime.
Frank entered. His eyes were filled with contempt as he looked at the dilapidated dwelling, and he scowled slightly.
“Regina, your living situation is dire. Do you want to return to the Millers?”
After hearing the words.
Regina was stunned for a moment.
“Do you mind that I’ve been in jail, Dad? I assumed you had…”
Her lips were slightly trembling, and her eyes were a bit crimson.
“Why should I dislike my daughter? Let’s go, your stepmother will be waiting for you underneath the car…”
Frank gave a small smile. A particularly loud high-heeled voice erupted from behind him before he could complete his sentence.
Caroline entered the room wearing a long black gown. Her brows and eyes were enticing, and her legs were exposed, causing Frank to look.
“Caroline, what brought you up? I didn’t instruct you to stay down there, did I?”
Frank couldn’t help but touch Caroline’s hand, fully ignoring Regina’s presence.
An instant.
Regina calmed down.
“I will not accompany you home, so please depart.”
Her tone was indifferent.
When she and her mother were chased away, Caroline claimed responsibility.
Caroline’s eyes were filled with worry, and she surreptitiously winked at Frank.
“Regina, you are still my good daughter as long as you are willing to return home.”
Frank’s words were genuine, and his tone was tinged with sadness and longing.
“Unless you and Caroline get divorced, I can go back.”
Regina spoke softly and without emotion in her eyes.
Frank’s face darkened unexpectedly, and he forced himself to tolerate it.
“She genuinely cared about you and requested me to bring you home, claiming you were suffering too much outside.”
“Do you still remember Marina?”
