TONY.
“I mean, think about it. If she were just like she speaks to be, she wouldn’t have a baby without knowing the father of the child, would she?” Lara blurted out.
“Lara.” I called out to her immediately I heard what she had just said.
“What? I didn’t say anything wrong, did I?” She questioned.
“Yes, you did.” I retorted, a stern look on my face as I stared at her. “Was that how you said it to her?”
“Said what?”
“The father and baby thing you just said. Was that how you said it to her?” I found myself asking.
Lara was fond of talking to people unfiltered, and it wasn’t surprising. The fact that she could say that to her best friend even made it sound more worse. I had tried to correct her a lot of times but she never listened. It was part of her already, and she wasn’t ready to take to correction.
“Well, is anything wrong with that?” She blurted out.
I couldn’t believe she would say that. I looked at her confusedly. When we started dating and when I knew her, the way she talked wasn’t even as bad as this yet. But these days, she just says things without thinking of how much it would hurt the other person. It was getting too severe, that even Luca complained to me about it sometime ago.
“Everything is wrong with that, Lara. You don’t talk to people anyhow. Besides, you don’t pick their pains and what they’re going through and insult people with it. I’ve corrected you about that countless times but you chose not to listen. What’s with this careless behaviour of yours?” I asked her sternly.
She scoffed as she looked at me unbelievably. “I assume you heard what I said when I started with this topic, yeah? I said Beth talked to me in a way I didn’t like. It isn’t the first time of her doing it and you think the best thing to do is scold me for defending myself?”
“That’s not defence, Lara. It’s not.” I said and rubbed my hand ony temple. I was not ready to have an argument with her today, or she wouldn’t get to the end of it.
One other attitude she was fond of was holding on to grudges, and I wouldn’t just do stuff that would make her point back to something I did in the past.
“You know what? Let’s put an end to it there, okay? Both of you were wrong. She shouldn’t have said whatever she had said to you, and you shouldn’t have said that to her either. You two should talk it out and end your rift whatsoever.”
“Uhm,” she looked around and shrugged. “I don’t think I said we have a rift. I was just pointing out the fact that I don’t like how she speaks sometimes. That’s all.”
“Oh, good.” I simply replied to her. I was stressed for the day and I didn’t want another thing to stress me even more. I picked up the remote control and changed the channel to a sports channel and began to watch it.
While doing so, my mind went back to the text I had read on Lara’s phone some minutes back, before she walked into the room. I told Luca about it, and he told me to get him the person’s number if it was possible for me.
Luca was good at tracking people and numbers down, and I could trust him with the fact that he would do a perfect job in finding out whoever sent her the text and why the person would send such a text to her. It was that discussion we were on, when she walked in, which was why we immediately stopped talking.
“You seem so lost. What’s with you? You aren’t even focused on the television in front of you.” Lara’s voice jerked me out of my thoughts and I turned to look at her.
“Uh?” I asked.
“What are you thinking about, uh?”
“I was watching the television, Lara. Do I seem bothered or anything to you? I’m very fine, okay?” I said to her and stretched my hand to touch her right cheek, making her smile sheepishly. “Come here,” I said and she moved closer to me. She placed her head on my laps and laid on the sofa while I was still seated. “I’m so glad I have you,” I said to her.
“Me too,” she replied and I smiled to her, making her do the same. “By the way, are you busy tonight?”
“No, why?”
“Don’t you think we should go on a personal date, just you and I? It would be so cool and pleasant. Don’t you think?” She asked me.
“I was also thinking the same thing, but I wasn’t so sure you would want to stress yourself tonight since I didn’t tell you beforehand.” I replied.
“Oh, I’m down for that anytime, trust me. Tonight, that is, yeah?” She asked me.
“Uhm, yeah.” I replied.
“Yay!” She squealed and got up from my lap, then picked her phone from where she had placed it earlier, on the seat next to her. She began to dial a number, making me wonder who she was about to call.
“Uh, who’s that?”
“Oh, it’s Beth.”
I raised my eyebrows, wondering why she wanted to call Beth. “Why are you calling her? Thought you two just had an argument, according to you?”
“Well, I didn’t say she still isn’t my best friend, did I? I’m going for a date with my man and I need to pick my outfits right. Only my girls can do that for me, so I need to ask her if she’s available, so we can pick my outfit together,” she said. The phone stopped beeping and she dialed the number again.
I shook my head as I stared at her. “Then you shouldn’t have complained about her in the first place. You two can’t leave each other.”
“Never. We fight all the time and argue, but we’ll always remain as bestfriends. And for all I know,” she said and touched her stomach. “This baby of mine is going to be born and be her baby’s best friend too. Then, that makes it more than perfect!”
I shook my head as I stared at her. “Girls will always be girls.”
“You can say that again,” she said, making me chuckle.
Beth had picked up her call by now, so she placed the phone by her ear. “Hey, Beth!”
“I heard half of your conversation, you know that right?” I heard Beth day.
“Oh, I had no idea you’ve picked up the call already.” Lara replied her. “Anyway, that aside, I have a date tonight and I would be needing your help!” She squealed.
The excitement in her voice made me smile. It had really been a while that I last saw her in that state, that she would be so excited about something. It was nice to see her like that once again, I thought as I relaxed my back on my seat and focused on the television.
