“How could it be you?” Sookie was stunned. She hadn’t expected the interviewer to be Enzo. After all, this company had no connection to the Nasadow Group, right?
Enzo squinted, gazing at the long-unseen Sookie. His eyes lit up. “This woman is damn perfect,” he thought. Under her tight white shirt, her bra was faintly visible, outlining her captivating chest. Her pencil skirt revealed her wheat-colored legs, highly tempting. Did this damned woman dress like this for an interview to seduce some man?
At the thought, anger surged within Enzo, causing a reaction in him. He wanted to take her right there, make her obedient. But first, he needed to understand Sookie’s intentions.
“Why can’t it be me? I bought this company yesterday and had my secretary send you the interview invitation. Isn’t that normal?” Enzo’s lips curved into a slight smile as he stared directly at Sookie.
“Why would you do this?” Sookie asked, puzzled. She walked straight to the seat opposite Enzo and sat down. She wanted to hear how this man, who had disappeared for three months, would explain all of this to her.
“Because I don’t want to wait any longer,” Enzo replied shortly, but his tightly clenched hands revealed his nervousness, a stark contrast to his usual cold and ruthless demeanor.
This unexpected display surprised Sookie. She raised an eyebrow, crossed her legs, and fixed her eyes on Enzo. Her gaze made the ferocious beast appear somewhat agitated. He cursed inwardly, but it didn’t stop him from seeming like a shy boy.
“And?”
“I wanted to see you, to know how you’ve been these three months. Are you still frightened by what happened before?” Enzo fired off the questions he wanted to ask, “But you’d better answer quickly. I don’t have much patience.” His expression changed quickly, a touch of impatience crept in as he scratched his head, raising a single eyebrow as he looked at Sookie.
Watching his awkwardness, Sookie smiled and said, “I’m not an applicant right now, but a beast tamer, trying to calm an angry lion.” She rested her hands on the desk. “It’s been three months since we last saw each other, Enzo. Both you and I have changed a lot.”
Enzo, eyeing her posture as if she were trying to tempt him, leaned closer to the desk, fixating on Sookie’s chest. “Yes, you look more alluring, and I, as always, am fierce.”
Following his gaze, Sookie’s cheeks reddened slightly. She realized they were referring to different kinds of changes. Her body unexpectedly couldn’t resist this man’s teasing; she involuntarily tightened her legs.
“Claiming you’re not afraid of what happened three months ago is definitely a lie. I used to have nightmares when I first woke up. Fortunately, I got busy with my thesis and focused more on my studies, gradually forgetting those dreadful events.”
Listening to her confession, Enzo furrowed his brow, his heart aching with self-blame for letting Sookie fall into danger, even getting shot twice. It was a stain on his criminal career, and the fact that the woman he loved bore it made it even worse.
“I’m sorry… I didn’t protect you.”
“But I don’t understand, Enzo. Why did you disappear for three months, only to come back to me like this? Are you monitoring my life?”
Sookie recalled crying in front of her computer, her memories in the bathtub. She had tried to frequent every place he might have visited, hoping they would meet again. But clearly, from this meeting, it seemed that this man had been avoiding her in the past three months.
“It’s not what you think, Princess.”
“What is it then?!” Sookie’s emotions flared. She couldn’t decipher this man’s intentions.
“I just hoped not to disrupt your life, but I found that I couldn’t bear to lose you. After Barton’s incident, Tessa whitewashed our internal affairs. I tried to make my blood-soaked life a little calmer. But I’ve been through too much blood and gore; it’s hard to adapt to a civilized life for a while. You’ve seen, I don’t feel anything about killing. But I don’t want to scare you, Princess.”
Despite his methods still being ruthless and brutal at times, at least they were within legal bounds. This was something he couldn’t possibly tell Sookie.
He didn’t understand the life of an ordinary person; he only knew that he loved her.
“I never thought you’d think like this. I searched for you for a long time, even at the D. O bar, where I last met Tessa. You made decisions for me without consulting me. I never asked you to do these things.”
Sookie’s eyes reddened. She spread her hands, surveying the entire office. It didn’t resemble an office as much as it did a place for mafia negotiations. The design was predominantly black leather, with dim yellow lighting, giving it a dangerous feel.
This place was like the current Enzo-despite his polished exterior, his words revealed a savage and rude nature. She knew he would appear when he felt he needed her, and would vanish when he felt he was intruding, leaving her entirely passive.
An agitated Sookie became hysterical. “With just one ‘it’s for your own good,’ you can completely shut yourself out of my world. Now you say you can’t bear to lose me and suddenly you’re in front of me again. What am I to you? A pet you keep? Are you planning to control everything about me?”
“No… I just came to terms with the fact, Princess. The fact is, I love you.”
“You love me?” Sookie was temporarily bewildered by Enzo’s sudden confession.
“Yes, I don’t understand your life, but damn it, you’re always on my mind,” Enzo said, somewhat regretful. “Damn it, if I could control you, I’d tie you to my bed right now.”
“What did you say?” At that moment, Sookie finally saw through his coarse words and understood this man’s heart. Wasn’t she the same? Over these three months, whenever she was quiet, she would think about everything between them. When Tessa asked her, she even concealed her inner sadness, believing that she and he were no longer possible.
“Yes, I love you. I don’t understand but I love you.”
This statement hit Sookie harder than any bullet. Her adrenaline surged. Feeling Enzo’s grip on her hand, she felt as if the entire world faded into the background, leaving only her and Enzo. Nothing else mattered.
“I do too,” Sookie whispered. She finally admitted her feelings, trying hard to respond to Enzo. Her heart raced; she clutched the hem of her skirt tightly, unable to meet Enzo’s gaze.
The office gradually warmed, and Enzo, watching her slightly flushed face, ran a hand through her silky hair, passionately kissing her full lips. Finally, they succumbed to a long-awaited, passionate kiss…
(The End)
