“He is still the captain of the South City, responsible for the operations here. But I don’t know much about his private life. Since we separated, he has returned to his residence, taken care of by Dr. Abel’s assistant the entire time. His body is strong, and he recovered completely in less than a month.”
Sookie’s suspended heart dropped. She was relieved to hear that Enzo was doing well physically. It sounded like he was living a good life. Perhaps, Enzo had found a new purpose, but clearly, she was wrong, and she didn’t know where she stood herself.
“When he left, he helped me with my medical expenses,” Sookie suddenly smiled bitterly. “I feel like I owe him this favor, even though we don’t have any kind of relationship, and yet he just vanished. I never expected it to end this way.”
“No relationship? You are still so pure, sweetheart,” Tessa’s heart sank. She knew these two loved each other, otherwise, she had never seen Enzo care so much for any other girl. “Don’t you want to know what happened back then?”
“Emm…” Tessa shook her head. “I don’t want to have any contact with him again,” she paused, then added, “Do you know? He once told me that he was destined to live a dangerous life, and you were destined for a simple and comfortable life. You two are not meant for each other.”
Sookie fell silent. She knew Enzo’s life was full of danger, but she never expected him to say such a thing. After all, they seemed so unfamiliar and mismatched.
“At that time, after they found Barton’s people, they confirmed that he was already dead. The stability of the three major gangs was completely shattered, and we were the ones who broke the rules. People from Italy hoped we would provide a reasonable explanation.”
“What explanation?”
“Like killing Enzo as compensation, or ceding some high-income territory.”
“What does that have to do with them?”
“You’re right, we certainly couldn’t agree to such unreasonable demands. So, I secretly arranged for an FBI undercover agent to investigate Barton’s influence and provide information. Soon, the FBI completely wiped out Barton’s remnants. Once Italy saw Barton’s fate, they quickly backed off and suspended their activities in Boston.”
“Phew, so…”
“Yes, now in Boston, the only gang left is the Shadowy Saints. But we’ve already legalized most of our business. Enzo is busy dealing with this issue. You know, three months obviously isn’t enough. Now, he’s more accustomed to being called ‘President Enzo,'” Tessa chuckled.
After hearing the story, Sookie felt a weight on her chest, finding it hard to breathe. She didn’t know if she should be happy for Enzo, now being the President of the Nasadow group. But she also knew that she and Enzo were simply not meant for each other; the distance between them had grown wider.
“So, how do you feel about Enzo now?” Tessa looked at Sookie. She knew the girl’s feelings for Enzo were complicated, but she wanted to know if Sookie still loved that man.
Sookie fell silent for a moment, then shook her head gently. “I don’t know. My feelings for him are complicated, but I don’t love him anymore. Maybe I never truly loved him.”
Upon hearing this answer, Tessa felt a bit disappointed, but she also understood that some things couldn’t be forced.
“Alright, let’s not talk about this,” Tessa smiled. She knew she and Sookie were forever friends, but there were some things she couldn’t empathize with.
“Let’s not talk about him, let’s talk about you. What are your plans?” Tessa changed the subject. “I’ve applied to several companies and hope to succeed in the interviews. I want to become a formal journalist,” Sookie replied. “I am looking forward to my future.” She tried to appear more positive and optimistic.
“Go for it, girl! I believe you will have a bright future,” Tessa encouraged. “As for me, I will continue to manage the Nasadow group and make it even more prosperous. After all, I can’t let the honor of the Shadowy Saints be tarnished.” She smiled confidently.
The two girls chatted happily until the cafe closed. Sookie felt much lighter in spirit and was glad to have met Tessa again. She was a strong and confident girl. As for Enzo, perhaps he had found his own happiness, but now she needed to focus on her future, work, and life.
Upon returning home, Sookie rearranged some of her work and decided to apply to several promising mid-sized media companies. She satisfactorily hit the “send” button, then decided to take a bubble bath.
“City of Stars” played on her iPod, the soothing jazzmusic made her feel relaxed as she soaked in the bathtub filled with fragrant bath oils.
She hummed along to the song, but in her mind, she kept replaying memories of Enzo. She recalled being with him, naked in the bathtub at his secret base, his tender and affectionate gaze, his strong and well-defined muscular lines, his full and sensual lips…
She felt like she was going crazy, still thinking about these things. Sookie submerged her head in the water, trying to clear her mind. After finishing her bath, she hopped into bed like a cute rabbit, burying her head in the pillow, drifting off into the world of dreams.
Several days later, Sookie opened her computer to find a new email, causing her heart to race.
“Wow! Could this be good news about my interview?” Sookie quickly opened the email, carefully reading its contents.
“Dear Ms. Willis… our company formally invites you to participate in an interview tomorrow afternoon at three o’clock. The address is…”
“Oh my god! I’ve really received an interview invitation!” Sookie hugged herself, excitedly exclaiming.
The next afternoon, Sookie dressed in a snug professional outfit. The blouse outlined her figure perfectly, while the black pencil skirt hugged her curves, captivating the attention of many men.
Upon arriving at the interview location, she realized that this company was quite different from traditional media companies. The people here seemed very regimented, as if they had a certain understanding of their positions, which seemed a bit strange to her.
She knocked on the door of the interview office, “May I come in? I’m the interviewee, Sookie Willis,” she asked solemnly.
“Come in,” came a brief yet familiar voice. Sookie pushed the door open and saw a high-end black leather sofa chair facing away from her. The office had a serious and austere grey-black decor. The black-brown desk was clean and simple, reflecting the owner’s efficient personality.
The sofa chair creaked as it turned, breaking the silence of the office.
“Welcome, Ms. Willis.”
Sookie saw the man before her and gasped, covering her mouth. The man was dressed in a black suit, the top two buttons of his shirt were undone, revealing his robust chest. His fierce, wolf-like gaze, coupled with a perfectly chiseled face, exuded a dangerous and alluring aura.
It was Enzo.
She never expected to meet him again in this way.
