Seeing Sookie in this state, Enzo couldn’t help but furrow his brow. He had ignored this girl; she should never have witnessed such a scene in her life.
Sookie’s gaze was fixed on the fallen boy.
She saw red liquid flowing rapidly from Roy’s forehead, his body temperature gradually dropping, slowly cooling into a cold corpse. Witnessing life slipping away, this process was beyond what she could bear.
Sookie wanted to run over, wanted to help him up, wanted to cover the wound on his forehead, wanted to call an ambulance, wanted to tell him, “I’ll take you to the hospital right away.”
She wanted to save him.
Enzo saw the depth of fear on her face, just like the day they first met, when he saw her for the first time.
Suddenly, he took a step forward, walking straight toward her.
Seeing Enzo coming towards her, Sookie immediately moved away, trying to keep her distance from him.
She was afraid of Enzo.
This realization made Enzo feel uneasy. He strode forward and pulled the girl into his arms, his deep voice flowing from his thin lips, “Don’t be afraid, you are safe, I will protect you.”
He held her in his arms, raising his left hand, gently stroking her back, patiently coaxing the girl in his arms, much like soothing an injured puppy. Sookie was tightly held by him, unable to see his eyes at this moment-cold and full of murderous intent.
In the space she couldn’t see, sharp eyes bypassed her, shooting straight towards the fallen person.
With her there, he didn’t want to say another word, so clever as he was, with just one look, he bypassed her fear and silently gave an order.
His men understood, immediately turning around and swiftly cleaning up the scene.
The moment she touched him, Sookie suddenly broke down, grasping his clothes tightly, burying her face in his shoulder, sobbing. She was too scared, her cognitive world had collapsed in just a few days.
It wasn’t until her legs started to feel numb that Sookie gradually stopped crying. She looked up at Enzo.
“When can I… go home?” she asked.
Enzo didn’t respond because he knew that only by dealing with Barton could they possibly be safe.
At night, Enzo came to Sookie’s room with a glass of warm milk.
Knock knock-the door opened.
Sookie looked plain, her lips pale, and she seemed very unwell.
“You look terrible, drink this,” Enzo handed her the milk. Sookie didn’t reply, she took the milk and sipped it.
At this moment, Enzo was gentle.
But Sookie couldn’t tell which side of him was real.
Facing his violent decisiveness, saying she wasn’t afraid was a lie. She also didn’t understand why he chose to keep her by his side.
In the darkness, Enzo wrapped one arm around her, pulling her towards him. She knew no words were needed. But she also knew that if they wanted to restore peace, they had to stand on the same front.
“Enzo, there’s something I need to confess to you,” Sookie gently pushed him away, gripping the cup of milk tightly, her fingertips turning white, revealing her inner tension.
“What?”
“Actually, the FBI has contacted me,” Sookie said, feeling short of breath after speaking. She knew the implications of those three letters for them.
“What did you say to them?”
“Nothing!”
“Tell the truth,” Enzo’s tone was very serious.
“Really nothing!” This time she shouted, “On your attic, when he forced me into the garage, he made me accept it.”
“You should have told me before.”
Sookie swallowed heavily, her eyes fixed on him. “I know, but I’m sorry, he used my family-”
“They can’t touch them.”
“Enzo, I-”
“Do you know what it means once the FBI gets involved?”
Sookie shook her head, she was afraid of him now, just like when he shot the boy this afternoon.
“My brother went to prison because someone talked to the FBI.”
“Landon isn’t-”
“That’s my other brother, Luke.” Enzo forced a bitter smile, shaking his head.
Sookie breathed heavily, to suppress her tense emotions, she took several sips of milk. After the nervousness eased a little, she patiently explained, “It was just a phone call, I didn’t betray your gang.”
“You can check the call log, and Tery also knows about this.”
Enzo paused upon hearing her words, “Tery? Why didn’t he mention it to me?”
Sookie shrugged, “I don’t know, I just know he said the signal of this phone was blocked by him.”
Enzo took a deep breath and said, “Okay, I understand. Stay here in peace for now. I’ll arrange forTessa to stay with you. She is the leader of our Shadowy Saints. You’ll be protected here.”
Early the next morning, three men left, leaving Tessa to accompany Sookie.
Perhaps because they were both girls, Tessa and Sookie got along particularly well. She really liked her younger sister, who was two years her junior. Although she was a mafia princess, she had grown up in England and rarely participated in the internal struggles of the gang. She was originally an assistant at an auction house in England. The year she was promoted, her father passed away, leaving behind this huge organization. In fact, her father had long ceased to be involved in the business, and Enzo, Landon, and Tery had already become influential. Out of respect for the old leader, Tessa became the current leader of the Shadowy Saints at their insistence.
“How did you and Enzo meet, really?” Perhaps out of boredom, Tessa couldn’t help but pry into Sookie and Enzo’s affairs.
Sookie hesitated; she didn’t know how to answer and could only nervously blurt out, “Just as I said before, I owed him a favor.”
“Have you two been intimate?”
“Um…” Sookie nodded.
“Have you kissed?”
“Um…” Sookie was sweating at her questions. “But I really have no relationship with him. Now, at best, we are friends… I guess.”
“But I’ve never seen Enzo be so gentle with any woman,” Tessa said as she nibbled on an apple.
“Is that so?” Upon hearing this, Sookie felt a slight sense of joy inside. “Do you happen to know a woman named Mia?”
Tessa looked surprised, but she fell silent, and the air seemed to suddenly still. After a while, Tessa swallowed the apple in her mouth and answered softly, “She… she’s my sister.” She spoke calmly as if she didn’t know the person.
Tessa’s sister?!
“But she’s already dead.” Before Sookie could finish, Tessa cut in, and Sookie immediately apologized in a fluster, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to, I didn’t know… I just…”
“It’s okay, she’s been gone for a long time, and she and Enzo weren’t anything. We just grew up together, in Enzo’s eyes, she was just a sister.” Tessa was bright and sunny, speaking about these matters as if they were of no burden.
