When Enzo carried Sookie back to the car, Sookie’s consciousness began to clear. Her head rested on Enzo’s broad shoulder, and she caught a whiff of his clean, masculine scent, which gave her a slight sense of security. However, her head felt heavy. Sookie blinked her eyes, slowly closed them, and then suddenly opened them. She jerked in his arms, grabbing onto his shirt tightly, and Enzo immediately held her firmly to prevent her from struggling.
Sookie’s heart pounded rapidly due to the unfamiliar environment and the experience before she passed out. She was afraid! She had almost been hurt by Kalvin once again. Thinking of this, tears fell unexpectedly from her eyes, wetting her long lashes, making her look pitiful.
Seeing her like this, Enzo felt an inexplicable bitterness in his heart. He gently stroked Sookie’s head and softly said, “Don’t be nervous, you’re safe now.” Bending down, he gently lifted her and placed the petite girl on the passenger seat.
“Are you okay?” Enzo covered her with a blanket, ensuring she wouldn’t get cold, then gently closed the car door and walked to the driver’s side.
On the way back to his place, she seemed terrified, silently shedding tears. Her pitiful appearance was truly heart-wrenching.
“Poor thing, it’s all right,” Enzo murmured softly. He felt he should comfort her, but now might not be the time, and he might be the last person she needed at the moment.
Perhaps having cried enough, Sookie swallowed hard, looked around, her eyes filled with tears and a thick nasal voice asked, “Where… where is this?”
“This is the way back to my place.”
“Did they… do it?” At the thought, Sookie’s tears couldn’t help but fall again.
Enzo glanced at her, his eyes hiding an inexplicable emotion.
“No.”
His fingers gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles even turning slightly white. He thought to himself: If those bastards did anything, he would make sure they paid dearly.
A surge of anger rose within him. He pressed the accelerator forcefully, leaving the main road, passing through Dorchester, and driving toward his building.
Throughout the journey, Enzo told himself that the reason for pursuing her was for his own good. Perhaps she might reveal some information, or she could lead the police directly to him, to the Shadowy Saints, and then round them all up. He told himself it was to avoid being found by the Polish men – because they could find him through this woman.
But he knew it was all nonsense.
Tonight, he went out for her.
Tonight, he went to find her because he wanted her back, back by his side, a possessiveness he was unfamiliar with.
On the way back, Sookie remained silent. Enzo looked at her several times, and she didn’t notice.
He guessed that after they got back, this girl might want to have it out with him, or maybe she would try to escape again. Yes, escape. This ungrateful woman. At every damn traffic light intersection, he paid extra attention, watching to see if she would try to escape.
She looked so fragile. She hadn’t said a word throughout the journey, just quietly curled up there, her hands clutched around her knees, her eyes gazing at the passing scenery outside.
Upon reaching their destination, Enzo looked at the dazed girl, reached out and lifted her gently. Her fragile body made him feel like she could break at any moment. As they took the elevator back up to his loft, he glanced at her, and she seemed to sense his gaze, trembling slightly. Once again, that strange feeling arose within Enzo, he wanted to hold her tightly, to tell her that it was all right, that he was there for her.
But he didn’t.
For one, he wasn’t anything to her, and second, he didn’t understand why he had such thoughts, he might be going a bit mad.
He led her to the bathroom, allowing her to quietly take a bath. Previously, he would have restrained her to prevent her from escaping, but this time he was certain she wouldn’t run away again.
“Thank you,” she mumbled. “I’m sorry.”
“Hmm.” Watching her lowered head, he found it quite amusing.
“I shouldn’t have hit you,” her voice was small.
“Indeed.” He rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
“I didn’t mean to.” She lowered her head even more.
“Well, you also hit my head.” He thought about it seriously.
Suddenly, she raised her head, her eyes glistening with tears, on the verge of crying, “I’m sorry, I just…”
“It’s okay.”
Enzo replied quickly; he hadn’t really blamed her.
“Thank you for coming to pick me up,” Sookie said softly. “Thoseguys, they…”
“They won’t bother you anymore, trust me,” Enzo assured her confidently. He smiled at the sight of this small figure before him. For some reason, he always found himself involuntarily drawn to her, wanting to protect her, not wanting anyone else to touch her; she could only be his. The thought of anyone else being close to her made him want to eliminate them all.
After receiving this assurance, Sookie seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. She inexplicably believed him.
“Is that your ex?” Enzo asked curiously.
“The situation is complicated. I don’t know where to start; they’re just like that,” she said, a bunch of bastards.
Sookie forced a bitter smile, once again looking at the floor and sighing.
Look at that, she had fallen for such a scumbag.
“So why did he do these things to you?”
“Because I broke up with him, and our parting was a bit extreme. He was very angry about it.”
Enzo couldn’t help but laugh, “What happened, did you publicly expose his secrets? Or did you sleep with his brother?” He couldn’t imagine her doing something wrong. “Come on, princess, tell me, what would someone like you do to get back at someone.”
“I burned down his rental house, along with all their equipment inside.”
Enzo blinked, looking at the girl in front of him with approving eyes, “Wow, cool. I didn’t expect my princess to be so badass.” Hearing his exaggerated praise, Sookie blushed involuntarily. With a hint of pride in her smile, she said, “You should be careful too; I’m not a pushover.”
Enzo raised his hands in surrender, laughing and nodding. “Okay, okay, okay, princess, I’m really scared, hahaha.”
Seeing him play along, she laughed, and in that moment, a seed was slowly germinating in both of their hearts.
