Who’s Sus

Book:The Devil's Possession Published:2024-6-5

“…in so we’re saying he might’ve been inside the building from the very beginning.”
The chaos had now died down and a few peeps were gathered in what looked to be a meeting room while one of the twins was giving a report or something. I’d never been allowed into this room nor was I invited to this very meeting which is why I’m currently stuck peeping through the slightly ajar door.
After Lucas almost killed himself jumping from that height half shifted with wolfsbane in his system, the twins rushed him somewhere meanwhile Kenley and a few others surrounded me.
They were the ultimate hum-no, werewolf shields so there was no need to worry for my own life. The only persons I could think of were Lucas who had been taken to who knows where and Kasan who had been inside for far too long.
I still can’t believe Lucas took a shot for me, I didn’t even notice until we got down! It might’ve been because I’m his Luna or whatever, but it still makes me feel so gooey inside. I wish we had an even better relationship now… one where we’re brother and sister rather than his stupid Luna.
Anyway, I don’t know where the nightwalker bitch went but everything went silent after a while and Kasan and some others dragged out a million knocked out werewolves. It took a bit for the wolfsbane to dissipate and as soon as it did, Kasan instantly started this meeting without my presence despite the that I had direct contact with the enemy!!! Is he trying to keep me left out?!
And he didn’t even check if I’m alive! I mean, I wasn’t hurt aside from the wolfsbane making me feel nauseous and one of the twins checked for injuries then ran a few tests but AT LEAST CHECK UP ON ME YOURSELF, WILL YOU?!
“I’ve made sure to exclude all those who were inside at the time.” The twin who’s called Jace spoke up again. He seems to be giving Kasan time to absorb everything in between each of his revelations. Well, I wouldn’t want to get on his bad side either if I were him. Plus, Kasan already looks like he’s fuming.
But Jace is a doctor? I guess that’s why he’s always looks so dead and sluggish. Poor thing must have a lot of shit to do. Then again, since they’re werewolves and they heal very very fast, isn’t that less job?
Yup, that’s probably just how he looks all the time…total opposite of his ever-grinning brother.
“Lucas is clear since he was with the Luna but he’s injured so I’ll update h–”
“No need. Don’t tell him anything at all.” Kasan demanded. His eyes have never left the table situated in the center of the room, I’m surprised he hasn’t bored a hole through it. “We still don’t know what happened the night he came back half-dead nor where he went every week while he stayed here.”
My face twisted in confusion. He’s basically saying Lucas is suspicious. WHY?!
“Then are you saying…” Jace trailed off.
“I’m considering every possibility here. If I’m right, I’ll ki–”
The sound of the door slamming aside filled the air and all eyes met my own, except for the person who I actually wanted to look my way. I scowled, “So you’re saying my brother is a traitor? Who are you suggesting he’s working for? Your father or that elder woman? What kind of logic is that?! Even if that was true, what would he be able to do now that he remembers nothing? He didn’t even know who you guys are…!”
I glared into Kasan’s very soul as I caught my breath. I honestly don’t know why I was blindly defending him nor why the accusation was making my blood boil when in fact, Lucas definitely betrayed me back then…his little sister. It wouldn’t take anything to betray his pack either. But…
He’s not like before. I can sense it, I just know it! So to accuse him like this is wrong!
“Go back to the room and wait till I’m done. We’ll talk about this later.” Those words of his held a level of finality that one couldn’t miss, and he still even had the audacity to refuse to spare me a glance. Its as if he’s setting me aside like some trivial unfinished work!
Without a second thought, my feet stomped across the room and went straight towards the couch Kasan was seated on. He had no choice but to look at me then, his glaring eyes conveying his disapproval. But who to care? I’m staying whether he likes it or not.
I took ahold of his knees and smacked his legs together before defiantly plopping down on his lap. “You’re talking about that nightwalker right? Only me and Lucas saw him, I think. I’m supposed to be the one leading this discussion. You–” I pointed at Jace. “-start talking.”
As silence annoyingly prevailed over the room despite my demand, Kasan’s arms found their way around my waist and he pulled me further up his lap with a heavy sigh, breath fanning the back of my neck.
He thankfully didn’t object any further.
“Why am I here?” A voice took our attention and my gaze swept over to the woman sitting across from me. She shifted in her seat, wincing when she rolled her shoulders and pain seemed to run through her. Her shoulder and wrist were bandaged so it’s likely she had an encounter with the enemy. Perhaps?
I cocked my head, eyes slitting. Who is she? Have I seen her here before?
“I was inside, plus I was half dead. Shouldn’t I be excluded too? Instead of all this, I’d rather go search for my father since I can’t count on any of you cowards!” She fumed, her eyes glaring deep into Kasan’s skull. The glare was intense and filled with hatred… one that only I or Kenley would dare to use on Kasan. Who is she?
“Perhaps if my father didn’t make sure I was the only one who could decode your shit or if my mate wasn’t one of your own, I would’ve been long dead already! You tend to toss those who become useless after all…” Her fingers clenched on her lap and she pushed her glasses further up the bridge of her nose. I could tell she was nervous beneath the fierce facade she was displaying. But still! Did she just talk to Kasan like that?
I gaped in disbelief.
Seriously, who the heck is she?
“You must think being mated to him gives you some kind of privilege.” Kenley suddenly piped in, sitting up in his seat as he sent daggers her way. Now that’s another deadly ass glare.
Since Kasan isn’t in any mood to bat an eye, it’s good that he’s getting angry in his stead. But whosoever her mate is, he’s quite unlucky considering that she looks like a handful.
“You don’t get to talk to the Alpha like that. Aside from being her brother–” I stiffened when Kenley glanced at me just as he said that, “–Lucas is just like the rest of us. Besides, you’re not completely done with your interrogation. You said he came through the window and while you tried to stop him, you got shot? Why would a human such as yourself challenge an armed man for the sake of our Luna? I thought you said you hated us all?”
Lucas? Don’t tell me THEY’RE MATES?! MY BROTHER AND THIS UGLY, NERD ASS, NO MANNERS, MOD–
“…You think I wanted to jump into harm’s way? If Lucas wasn’t with her then I would’ve gladly let him do as he wished, hell I would’ve even told him where she was! This stupid mate bond still works even if I don’t want him. And why would I work with the people who took my father? If anyone, I’d join hands with the woman who came here yesterday.”
My brain skipped over everything she just said and focused on six very irking words.
‘…even if I don’t want him…’
The nerve of this ug–!
“You can leave.”
I instantly turned to look at Kasan incredulously, but unsurprisingly, I was ignored.
He’ll let her go just like that? At least teach her a lesson for fuck’s sake!
Even the woman herself look surprised, but she didn’t bother to question it. She brushed her palm against the front of her clothes and stood from the couch, her feet shuffling towards the exit.
I frowned, annoyed. She’s walking way too fast for someone who was being so brazen.
“You have one job, Lora.” Kasan’s sudden words had her stopping in her tracks just as she stepped out into the hall and was about to close the door. “Focus on that or your father won’t be the only one who goes missing. Keep in mind that you are the one responsible for the lives of your remaining family.”
Though I knew nothing of their sour relationship, I nodded in agreement and smiled when she sunk her teeth into her lip and looked to the floor.
But her insolence didn’t end just yet.
“Father always said, ‘Only work with those who you’re 100% sure will never betray you…’ You’re doing just that.” Her voice was barely audible, yet every word was full of venom.
What kind of business does she think we’re in? Instead of complaining, get your own revenge…simple.
“By the way,” her fingers took hold of the knob, “I never said he came through my window… he came straight through the door. Before I blacked out, he was talking into some kind of ear mic, something about the other guy here is of no use to him. I’m only telling you this because they’re our mutual enemy but… it seems like there’s more than one traitor here. Deciding who gets to enter the meeting room based on who was outside is pretty stupid. One of them might very well be in this room as we speak, could be anyone…even your closest friend or…family.” With that, the door slowly closed behind her.
So, she’s saying this place is crawling with enemies? Werewolf enemies at that.
I could feel Kasan’s hold tighten around me, enough for his nails to sink into my clothes. It wasn’t hard enough to prick me, but it hurt a bit nonetheless.
He prolly has no idea who these traitors would turn out to be nor what they’re planning. Can’t we just throw some bait?
But honestly, if I should pick someone who looks sus, I’d say Kenley. He’s wayyy too jumpy…and annoying.
“So Jace-” He turned to Jace as one of his hands thankfully loosened and slipped under my butt, fingers fishing something from his pocket. “–I thought father only worked with humans?”
I glanced around to take a look at whatever it was that he took out but was astonished to spot a cigar stuffed between his lips. One of his men moved faster than light, rushing over with a lighter and quickly igniting the tip.
Scrunching up my nose, I slid off his lap and moved to the spot beside him, arms folded across my chest.
Since when did he smoke?
“I’ve been on his tail for a while now and I can confirm that he has quite a few werewolf men.” Nate spoke up this time, “I can’t say for sure if he knows or if these werewolves are simply rogues…but for now, it’s still a possibility that he took them in knowing what they are.”
“The wolfbane started to spread from one of the guest rooms.” Jace added, “Only a few know where the key is. And also, in regards to the Luna…”
My ears perked at that, head snapping in his direction and brow raising. What about me?
“It’s likely that what we suspected is true and all that separates her from us is the fact that she cannot shi–”
“Jace!”
Kenley was the one to cut him off, but I watched from the corner of my eyes as Kasan shook his head only slightly, silently telling Jace not to continue.
What the fuck? Is something wrong with me?… like a d-disease? Is that why he did so many tests despite me not having any visible injuries?!
“…Oh…” Jace cleared his throat, “My apologies.”
“B-Boss…” A dude who had been standing in the corner held up his hand hesitantly, eyes meekly staying glued to the floor. He didn’t look familiar, probably a new one. “The elder’s men happened to find a bug on one of the paintings.” He took out a small black bead-sized thing from his pocket and held it up between his fingers.
Soft gaps left a few lips, but Kenley was the first to react. He stood from his chair in an instant, frantic eyes sweeping the room, “Why are you saying this now?! That means they could be-”
“N-No, I’ve already searched a few of the rooms, including this one. I didn’t find any more…yet.”
A gloomy silence reigned over the room, one that was suffocating for everyone besides me of course. They kept their mouths closed and eyes locked on anything except Kasan’s frowning figure. I sat silently as well, idly picking at my nails until fingers entwinned with mine and softly, I was pulled from the couch, face bumping into Kasan’s rock-hard chest. I looked up at him, startled.
“The full list of those my father’s been in contact with…” He said, eyes trained on Kenley, “Milk every single spy we have left and bring that to me no later than tomorrow. I’ll be choosing who we take along, and there will be no guns. We’ve been playing it easy for far too long.”
Then without another word, he walked off, pulling me behind him.
