Prominent rock-hard jaw bones…
Steely ebony eyes…
Flaring nostrils…
Pursed lips…
Deadly aura…
And lastly, eerie silence…
His eyes were relentlessly transfixed on my perplexed form and as seconds passed, I could almost feel his gaze dig into me like sharp knives. It had been a while since I last saw him with an expression half as overwhelming as this one… but I know for sure that this is wayyy worse than I’d ever seen.
Frankly, that stare alone told me that I might’ve said a bit too much. And maybe I also acted out of character ALOT.
Simply put… I overreacted and mindlessly showcased my scars for his eyes to see.
But oddly, despite being ashamed, it didn’t feel half as bad as when my dad caught me crying in the backyard when I was a child. And neither did it feel as bad as when mom saw me playing with a Barbie doll instead of loading guns.
With Kasan, everything hits so irritatingly different.
“You’re right.” His sharp words drew my attention back to his glacial eyes and I flinched at its growing intensity. “Your family matters has nothing to do with me so do as you wish, but whatever happens as a result of your stupidity will be yours to deal with later on. Rest assured that I won’t batt an eye… nor will I poke my nose where it doesn’t belong.” With that, he spun his head towards the exit and reached for the door, his veiny hand wrapping tightly around the handle.
It was relieving that he agreed, however, the heavy feeling atop my chest didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. Perhaps, I shouldn’t have pressured him like that. ‘I won’t ever forgive you’ was definitely a bitch move.
But it’s as if he thinks I’m a child. I know I might seem scared and I admit I am, but I’m not the same as I was back then. I can fight, I can shoot, I can kill. I’m the toughest I can possibly be!
I’ll solely let Lucas see this side of me and nothing more…. As in, the wicked side that doesn’t care about a thing except me, myself and I.
A soft clank jerked me out of my thoughts. Following the sound, I darted my gaze and blinked in disbelief as I watched the door handle fall to the floor in a crumbled bit.
I winced.
“Kasan…?” I called his name, but he didn’t even have the decency to look back. He dug his fingers between the door and it’s frame then in one swing, he pulled it open, the force causing his nails to chisel through the mahogany wood as it slammed back against the hard wall.
Right when he placed one foot outside the room, he took a short, last-minute glance back at me before marching out of the room, each step threatening to shake the very floor he walked on. Within those couple seconds that he met my gaze, I perceived a familiar look reflect in his eyes… that same one he made that time when my parents came and we had that slight disagreement.
The effect that expression had on me was no joke. The moment I saw it, guilt invaded my being and I was immediately tempted to take back every bit of what I had said.
But without a doubt, I can’t possibly allow him to hurt Lucas… I can easily take back every other uncalled-for things I might’ve said, but not the part where I asked him not to hurt my brother.
That condition will stand…. no matter what.
“Kasan…!”
I called after him again, only to flinch when he slammed the door behind him, the sharp sound making my ears ring. It swung back and forth a few times before stilling.
Running a hand through my hair, I slipped off the bed and moved towards the door, my legs cramping from having sat for too long. When I stepped out into the hall Kasan was already out of sight. I surveyed everywhere my eyes possibly could and soon spotted him descending the stairs.
I took off towards him without hesitance.
I wasn’t running after him to apologize for something so trivial… that was for sure. Taking back what I said is more than enough.
“Alpha.” Out of nowhere Kenley entered the living room and swept his gaze, nodding in Kasan’s direction when he caught sight of him.
He walked over to the foot of the stairs and halted. “I checked with their Father and it doesn’t seem like they know a thing about his whereabouts after he left nor his secrets. He also said that they were both adopted… And as for the spy, he was silenced before I got there, but he left something for his daughter to decode. And…. ” He continued to speak, not seeming to care one bit that I was still present while he openly reported to his boss.
“Did you go alone?” Kasan gave his prompt reply. He had now joined Kenley at the foot of the stairs and stood beside him as they spoke, also seeming to not care that I was present.
“It doesn’t matter…. Also, the Riders also wrote their message on the wall with his blood. They’ve admitted to sending in the nightwalker. I’ll look into who they’ve recently been contacting and give you a list.”
“Bring the Lora girl here for the time being, but don’t let a word about her father slip. It’s best if we keep an eye on her rather than placing her at the safehouse, especially since she seems like the type to run when things get messy…. And make sure to let her know that she has less than two days to decode the message, I don’t have much time to spare.”
“I’ll have her here within the next hour.”
Wow… they’re both ignoring me.
“Kasan!” I waved awkwardly at him whilst using the chance to try and catch up with him, but Kasan only glanced back at me, grim look still present on his face.
He didn’t say a word, he didn’t even blink. Then as if he was trying to showcase his rage, he grabbed an envelope that Kenley was holding to his chest and then stalked off, leaving a few incredulous words in the air, “I’ll go with you.”
Kenley shook his head, sighing as he glanced between us both with an annoyed glint in his eyes. “You don’t need t–”
“I said… I’ll go with you.” He insisted.
I blinked. “You’re not leaving! Stop walking away from me, you’re making my head hurt!”
Yet again, he failed to respond.
I picked up my speed and once I neared him, I quickly reached out a hand to grip his shoulder. “I’m not done talki–!”
Just as my fingers were about to touch his shoulder, a sudden brief twinge in my head had me pulling to a sudden halt. I slspped my palm against my forehead, my face scrunching up in both pain and annoyance.
The pain thankfully calmed down as quick as it came and it was practically at the brink of disappearing completely when in the blink of an eye, a warm, thick body pressed against my side and an arm quickly circled my waist, keeping me rooted in place.
“What’s wrong!?” Kasan pressed the back of his palm to my cheeks one after the other as he glanced over my face for any sign of distress. “You don’t have a fever and you seem perfectly fine. Is it an headache? Does it hurt anywhere?”
I couldn’t help but allow my lips to pull into a small smile as I watched him panic slightly. It’s good to know that he’s still obsessed with me no matter what I say.
I stared up at him, my figure looking like a midget compared to his muscular one. “If anyone saw your face back there, they’d think we just had our first big couple’s argument.”
His arms disappeared from my waist as soon as those words reached his ears and he frowned. I immediately gripped his wrist before he even had the chance to walk away from me.
“It’s upsetting that you checked my background like a creep, but you don’t need to care about Lucas.” I assured him. “I’m not the same kid I used to be back then. If he dares to try anything, I’ll break his arm myself. Then again, you’d probably do that before I can…” I shrugged. “I honestly don’t get why a so-called devil is so obsessed with me, but it makes me feel…. untouchable. You wouldn’t let him hurt me, would you? You looked so wo—”
“You coming or not?” Kenley intervened with an irritated grunt.
Glaring over at him, I swiftly grabbed the envelope Kasan took earlier and tossed it in his direction. “No, he’s not. Get lost.”
Kenley glared right back but didn’t say anything. He merely picked the envelope off the floor and stormed out.
I turned back to Kasan, only to find him wearing a glare similar to Kenley’s. “Let’s go down to the basement,” He grumbled, moving his arm so that he was the one who held my wrist. “If you can stay in the same room as him for more than five minutes, I swear I won’t kill him.”
My body went rigid, a feeling of anxiety passing over me. “You already promised not to hurt him!”
“Believe it or not, I was just about to rip his throat out and crush his organs one after the other. I thought you knew me a little bit better than that.”
I cringed. “And you expect me to believe you this time around? Did you not hear when I said–”
“I heard very clearly… and I don’t really care.” His answer was simple… and annoying. “As long as you’re alive and by my side, I wouldn’t mind if you despise me right up until your last breath…”
