MALIA’S POV
“I… uhm don’t know I was supposed to have let that piece of information out” He raised his hands in surrender, under my unapproved gaze.
“You are a Beta. The beta of this pack and when introducing yourself to me, you thought that piece of information was not worth sharing?” I questioned, folding my hands in front of my chest disapprovingly.
“I should have” He nodded as if he had just realized his mistake. “But I thought you were going to figure it out or something”
“How was I supposed to figure it out? I’ve only been here for a day.” I couldn’t help the genuine smile that was threatening to break free from my lips at the sincere confusion in his gaze.
“You are right. I should have told you, I guess. But it has become such an ordinary part of my life that I thought everyone could just simply figure it out”
The way he went to great length to express what was on his mind, I love that.
“Alright, I will let this slide but next time I won’t. For your own sake, I hope there is no next time” I eyed him playfully and he nodded, seeming to be distracted.
“Is there something else you are supposed to tell me? I am giving you the grace of now, say it out as I do not like to be taken by surprise” I squirted my eyes suspiciously at him.
“No, nothing I can think of at the moment. I have told you that the Alpha is my brother right?” He questioned with uncertainty.
“Yeah, you have. The resemblance is obvious.”
“Then that is about it. Nothing exciting to say about my life anymore” He shrugged and was about to get on talking when the ringing of his phone interrupted him.
A simple movement as fishing his phone out of his pocket, he doesn’t do it most elegantly and I couldn’t help but stare in adoration.
“Excuse me” He made sure to utter before answering the call. Most of his replies to whosoever was behind the phone were one-worded replies and I could tell that he didn’t appreciate the call.
I zoned out at some point and went on to observe the all of a sudden very intriguing design in the table clothes. In other words, boredom struck in.
“Forgive the lengthy break. The call was incredibly important, I couldn’t ignore” He apologized immediately he hung up the call.
“Oh no, I understand. Fortunately. I hope all is well?” The sudden concern on his face caused me to ask.
“Just some pack issues here and there. Nothing significant that I can’t handle” He waved it away.
“So as I was asking, how would you rate the food here”
“Although I have answered that question, I will still, since I notice you seem to be very fond of this place. The food is tremendous” My smile was so wide and in place that my cheek began to ache even.
“Well, I’m glad we share something in common for a start” He responded.
The rest of the stay in the eatery was us munching on our dessert, and him introducing me to the owner of the restaurant. A giddy aged woman who was so delighted to see me.
He had never brought with him a friend, not to speak of a lady friend and that single fact pleased her to no end. She did promise to serve me free of charge if I would stick around and be with him. She was worried he was gonna end his life without a friend.
I entertained her concern and promised to be his friend. After the light chat with the old woman, we stepped out of the restaurant, by then the sun was far gone and replaced by the warm gloomy glow of the moon and its surrendering stars.
The night was chilly and still. If there was anything about this pack that I would have preferred my previous pack would be how quiet the night was.
Everyone had set back into their homes, the street was empty and not a single person was in sight except for the guards and street lamps. We walked side by side in a comfortable silence back to the pack.
“Do you have any plans for tomorrow?” He asked, suddenly breaking the chain of quietness.
“Not necessarily. I was just going to wallow in bed and rest out the tiredness in my bones. I have trekked around the forest and haven’t really had time to rest” I responded with sincerity.
“Fair enough. Your body does need some rest after that. I also have pack duties to fulfill tomorrow. Lots of them and you might not be seeing a lot of me tomorrow and the day after, but I will make sure to check up on you if the chance presents itself” He said.
The way he spoke was like we were some long-lost friends who were suddenly reunited after being away from each other for ages. I found that quite charming.
I nodded. “Alright. Take your time. I will also try to tour around the pack on my own. Get to know some places. It won’t be a bad idea right?”
“Not at all. I told you from the start that this pack is the most stunning and serene pack you are ever going to see. Waltz through it at any time of the day you’d prefer, we do not have a cost to worry, I assure you”
“I will keep your words in mind, Beta.”
Before we realized it, we had reached the palace and had to go our separate ways. I learned that the western part of the palace was where his room was and he left only after I promised I might visit him one of these days.
Tiredness set in the moment I stepped into my room and changed into much more comfortable clothing before throwing myself in bed.
“Ah, the bliss!”
