22. Nick’s Heart Screams

Book:BROKEN : Satanic Verses Published:2024-5-1

The twilight that lay in the sky began to fade, the sadness began to move around the soul that had been trapped in darkness for years. The pieces of longing that fused with the guilt have been accumulated. It was in this sad room that Nick’s body wailed. Allowing the skin to be exposed to the hot air that settles in the cubicle underground.
A consequence that he must swallow whole due to the actions of his demons against Jacob who is now on the verge of dying. The bones of his hard fingers were responsible for the unwanted event. Twenty minutes ago, the manly man with thick beards had sneaked into the guard’s room to retrieve the keys to an infirmary he had been eyeing for years. Wearing a maid uniform, Nick manages to outwit the officers with his clichéd tricks.
“Mr. Paul, here is your coffee order. Please drink it!” Nick bowed. The made-up voice and his mask-covered face managed to make the brown-skinned man throw away his suspicions.
“Put it on the table, thanks!” The crescent moon rose on Paul’s sweet face. The young man didn’t see Nick’s large hand slipping into the partially opened drawer. Nick’s shrewdness makes surveillance cameras unable to record his actions. How reckless! Each key has a special place, but the clerk put it in any place. Paul doesn’t know, ants can always find food in the most secret corners and the ants are very happy when in fact, they find good food in the open.
A smirk rose behind the white mask that partially covered Nick’s face. Within seconds, Paul was snoring after yawning multiple times. Nick forced his feet to climb several stairs that would lead him to the 15th floor. The distant space couldn’t stop Nick from suing Jacob for what he said twenty years ago. The hands of the clock keep turning, there is not much time to be used. Paul’s sleeping pills had a long-lasting effect, but a strict system would fix the problem quickly. Nick must be able to control his minutes. The man stopped swinging his legs in room number 8. Only need to turn the key twice, the door opened.
“Jacob!” Suddenly, Nick’s emotions jumped sharply to see someone he used to respect while the man looked at Nick with a surprised expression.
“Nick? Is that really you? Did you come back safely? When are you coming back? Did you succeed?” Jacob immediately stormed Nick with lots of questions.
“What worked? I don’t want your bullshit! I just want to demand an explanation of what you did to the Kingdom twenty years ago!”
“You’re asking something I explained?”
“You lied to me!”
“I’m telling the truth!” Jacob threw Nick’s hand that was squeezing his collar.
“Lie! Lieutenant Fernando himself said it!” Jacob suddenly chuckled.
“Do you really believe it?” said Jacob still laughing at him.
“Stop that joke of yours!” Nick landed a punch on Jacob’s jaw.
“Do you think someone like Fernando would lie?” Again, Nick threw his punches until Jacob choked on the red liquid that was visible in his mouth.
“Do you think I lied? You are so stupid!”
“You’re a bastard, Jacob!” This time, Nick no longer paused his fists. His opponent was indeed a formidable general. However, in that place, they are the same. However, Nick could not complete his desire. The officers caught him first.
“Stop it! Emi, Lily, quickly take Mr. Jacob for medical treatment! I will take this person to the dungeon.” An officer immediately locked Nick’s hands with handcuffs while the two women lifted Jacob who was already lying down.
“Did Fernando bring you here? Don’t the police believe you that the killer is still in the forest? Just remember one thing, Nick. Before living in this cursed room, I had been to that forest long before the Kingdom!” Nick was taken aback by Jacob’s last statement, then the man suddenly lost consciousness.
“Let me go!” Nick rebelled against the officers.
“No!” The officer buried a needle into Nick’s skin until Nick’s strength slowly weakened.
Nick was still upset after several hours of the sedative in his body running out of action. The words Jacob had said a while ago had really occupied his brain. What other riddles did the great men create? Nick kicked roughly the aluminum utensil that adorned the room, feeling dizzy with his thoughts torn between his case and his family’s condition at home, especially Elfara’s. News of bullying against Elfara at a cafe hurt his conscience as a father. Which father would accept if his daughter was treated like that by people who were below their family status?
“Damn it! Everything is unbelievable! There must be a big conspiracy behind all of this.” Nick ruffled his hair. The events of the past replayed in his memory.
Nick remembers very well about the media spreading bad rumors about the Kingdom Community, at that time several military personnel of the country held a press conference that touched on the reputation of the Kingdom.
“We as state servants feel harassed by the presence of a community that is not even recognized by the government. The Kingdom community, they are snotty children led by foreigners. Remember, only a few of them were Native Americans. Even though they are young, they are still strangers with hidden pettiness. Maybe they want to dominate Brasilia using their achievements and kindness.” The snippet of a sentence delivered by an individual who claimed to be a servant of the country rang in Nick’s ears.
What Jacob said was true. A murder case in the forest had been revealed, but he couldn’t prove the amount of gold that Jacob said, because his goal was not to find gold. Jacob Alfonso, he’s a general he’s quite close to. Could he be lying? But why did Jacob do all that? Was it because Jacob was starting to take an interest in his wife? This, of course, did not confirm his suspicions.
Another memory of Nick reminds of a figure named Fernando. The evidence of Jacob’s mental illness and the invitation letter from the president, Nick had seen it for himself. Both have strong evidence. There could be a third person, but who is it? Suddenly Nick felt a violent throb on each side of his head. Many things had happened to his family, but he couldn’t do anything about it. In fact, now he was in the worst place where it was impossible to have a chance to escape like he had done even though he had failed many times.
“Jessy … I’m sorry!” Nick sobbed.
“I really am an idiot! I’m a loser! I should have listened to your words back then.”
“You must be in a lot of pain, Jess. Our daughter is suffering!”
“And Dev ….”
“Argh!” Nick knelt down, revealing his hurt to the earless walls that surrounded him. The wealth he left for his family had no effect on them. Nick sank in deep regret. Really, fate was being so funny to him. Where destiny’s power forces him to remain sane under the pressure of madmen.
