Severo had undoubtedly researched Desiderio in detail, otherwise it would not have been possible to know that Desiderio had suffered from cancer three years ago.
But Allyce also felt that Severo was trying to say much more than that.
She could not help but feel satisfied with her decision.
Severo her stratagem, and she had her own way of doing it.
He still had to find out what he wanted to know on his own.
“Mr. Betances is right about that, it is indeed my luck, or I could not be sitting here today talking to Mr. Betances”.
Desiderio’s words sounded like there wasn’t much of a problem, however his words quickly became, “About you and Allyce, you have to give me a reasonable explanation, no matter what misunderstanding you have about me, I am Allyce’s uncle and I am in a position to ask about you and her.”
Allyce was slightly surprised to hear Desiderio refer to himself.
“It’s between me and her, no one else has to worry about it. Severo’s voice was clearly cold.
“So in the eyes of Mr. Betances, I am someone else as an uncle, it seems you are not attached to Allyce either, I thought you had genuine feelings for her”. Desiderio’s tone sounded regretful.
Normally, Desiderio would have been angry and upset by this, but he was very calm, unlike his usual affectionate uncle.
“Orlin Delahoz died more than ten years ago, and you came after Allyce had grown up. The sarcasm in Severo’s words was heavy.
As if that wasn’t enough, Severo continued: “To obstruct me twice when I was looking for her at such an important moment two years ago! And then to take her away, you were so good to her!
Severo’s voice grew colder the more he spoke.
Allyce listened and thought carefully for a moment before realising that Severo was talking about what had happened two years ago, during the time she had lost her baby.
But what Severo was saying was that he had actually been looking for her during that time, but that Desiderio had stopped him and had not let Severo find her?
Why would Desiderio do that?
A sudden shiver ran through Allyce’s body.
She remembered that when she had begged Desiderio to fetch Severo, he had said he would take her, but he had said nothing about Severo fetching her.
She had no time to think of anything else, and because of her good feelings for Desiderio, she had not doubted him.
If Severo had met her at that time, and Severo had explained things to her, wouldn’t the two of them have had those two years of separation?
The more Allyce thought about it, the angrier she felt.
But rage was followed by boundless loss.
It no longer mattered.
Even if she and Severo had not been separated for two years, it did not mean that she and Severo had not reached this point.
It was just that Desiderio was hiding the fact that she still felt some resentment …!
“It’s all in the past, for a woman he no longer loves, Mr. Betances is still so worried and so angry about what happened, does she still love him? But then, why did he break up with her?
Desiderio’s tone had regained its calm, and as he finished he looked at Severo slowly, as if trying to read his true thoughts in his expression.
Severo grimaced: “I just can’t see anyone doing tricks under my nose”.
As soon as Severo finished speaking, he called out, “Come in”.
Immediately, a bodyguard pushed open the door and entered.
“Escort Mr. Alvidrez out”. Severo said this coldly and said no more.
Allyce, who was crouched behind the sofa, only felt her legs go numb.
He moved and carefully straightened his legs and sat straight down on the floor.
If they have finished talking, why hasn’t Severo left?
There was no telling how long Severo would be here and when she would come out!
After listening for most of the day, there were only two things I heard.
One, that Desiderio and Delfina knew each other.
Two, Severo looked for her during the time she was recovering in hospital after losing her baby.
But neither of those two things seemed to matter much now.
Allyce stifled a soft sigh and took a deep breath, only to inhale the strong smell of smoke.
Severo was smoking.
With such a bad stomach, I was still drinking and smoking!
At this rate, Severo would surely die very soon.
Allyce gritted her teeth and resisted the urge to run out and put out her cigarette; she and Severo were no longer related.
Severo once loved her and listened to everything she said.
But now, after Severo had made it clear that he no longer loved her, it wasn’t clear that she would get a lecture if she found out he was listening here, let alone put out his cigarette.
Therefore, his death no longer concerned him.
In spite of what she told herself, the truth was…
“Severo, don’t you want to live, Laurinda is younger than me, and if you don’t take care of your body, she will have to find another man, and you will be happy?”
When he realised that the words were coming out of his own mouth, he wanted to turn back the clock.
Preferably backwards, until before coming to dinner.
If I hadn’t come to the dinner, I wouldn’t have met Severo, and I wouldn’t have gone to the box to eavesdrop.
Severo sat motionless, the cigarette in his hand had burnt to the ground and had collected a large amount of ash, so he had taken only a few puffs.
Allyce stood behind the sofa, her slender fingers clutching it tightly, her face rigid, unable to feel even the pain and numbness in her legs.
Why the sudden rush to say this? …
He looked at the top of Severo’s head, his insides tormented.
After a few seconds, Severo slowly stood up, stubbing out the cigarette in his hand, and turned his head to look at Allyce.
Allyce also looked at him.
His dark eyes were as deep as a pool, like a bottomless whirlpool that could swallow a person. A flash of complex emotions flashed through his eyes, and his gaze fell on the shoulder strap over which she had slumped.
Feeling his gaze, Allyce looked down unconsciously and quickly fastened her braces.
She was wearing a halter dress and the straps were a little loose, they didn’t fall down when she was standing, probably because she had been sitting on the floor for a long time and hadn’t realised she was looking.
Taking in his movements, Severo then averted his gaze, his voice clear and inaudible: “How did you get in here?”
Allyce wondered if Severo would take it out on her, or if he was already angry.
He looked away shyly, but his tone was a little stubborn: “I opened the door and came in.
