Lakshmi’s POV
“Mia” I called out to Mia to get her attention. She was so focused on her textbook, it almost felt like I wasn’t sitting in front of her.
“Yes Lakshmi” she raised her head up.
“I think I am a bad person” I blurted out just to find out what Mia’s response would be.
“Humans think a lot of things that are not true” Mia was trying to dive into research she had made so far and I was seriously not interested.
“You were supposed to ask me why I would say such,” I raised my eyebrow and tilted my head a bit.
“Okay why?” Mia asked.
“Are you asking me because you want to know the reason or you are just asking me because I told you it was the right thing to do?” I was very confused at that point.
“Both” Mia shrugged.
I shook my head and looked at her, Mia just wouldn’t stop finding ways to surprise me.
“Anyways Mia, I have finally met my brother but there is just one problem” I was about to confess to how silly I was.
“Which is?” Mia was more attentive this time.
“I think I might have a crush on my brother maybe in love” I whispered as I drew myself closer to her.
Mia burst into laughter at once as she couldn’t hide her perfect white teeth.
The whole class suddenly looked at Mia and wondered what could have been so amusing that it made Mia laugh so much and when Mia noticed that she had drawn unnecessary attention to herself she just stopped laughing immediately and covered her face with her textbook.
I just giggled and took the book from her.
“Mia, covering your face won’t erase what just happened” I dropped the book and paused for a moment.
“But what was so funny in what I said?” I continued.
“I laughed because what you are saying is impossible. You cannot love your own brother and the fact that you just met him and concluded your in love makes it very amusing to me” she was trying to explain things to me very calmly.
“Mia, you might not understand how I am feeling but I know what I feel” I tried to defend myself but it was just pointless especially when it came to Mia, she believed only in logic.
“You said that Caleb was in love with me because I saved his life and he asked me to be his girlfriend but the same Caleb defamed me and shamed me, calling me a thief. Is that love?” Mia asked.
“No that’s stupidity” I was so quick to answer that I didn’t regret my answer until I had already replied.
“Maybe that’s the same position you are finding yourself in. Maybe he is cute and you like how he acts towards you, then you feel you are in love.
And another thing you are too young to fall in love with anybody not to talk more of your half brother” Mia made everything crystal clear and I really appreciated it but I also wanted to change the topic and talk about something else.
“Mia by the way I want to ask you something?” I looked at her as if seeking for permission to go ahead with my question.
“Yes” she replied
“We cannot pretend like nothing happened, we know about Alyssa but that aside how did…? When did it happen?” I couldn’t find the right words to put in my sentence and I didn’t know if I was making any sense at all.
“My dad gave me this necklace” she brought out the necklace that hung around her neck.
“He asked me to call him for help anytime I need it” she continued but I was still very confused.
“But you told me that both your father and mother are dead so how come? Did he give it to you before he died?” I just couldn’t stop myself from asking one question after another.
Then she started to narrate the story of how she got the necklace and I just sat down there like a child listening to a bedtime story until the teacher finally walked into class with Alyssa trailing behind her.
Now I understood why Mia kept on feeling uneasy whenever she was around, what exactly does she want?
I wonder how special that necklace was that she wouldn’t stop troubling Mia and after all Mia had narrated to me I was determined to protect her from this evil girl at all cost.
Alyssa sat behind Mia and the way she moved her body clearly gave out that she was up to something but I just couldn’t figure out what is was.
For some reason no one wanted to turn around and have side talks with their friends like they normally did, everyone was just so focused on the teacher except for Mia who kept trying to get away from Alyssa.
Alyssa slowly reached for her school bag and brought out a pair of scissors, I refused to take my eyes off her even if it was for a second.
Then she cut Mia’s hair but that didn’t go unnoticed to Mia as she stood up from her seat in rage to attack Alyssa who pretended not to hear anything.
“Why did you cut my hair!” Mia screamed and the class suddenly paused as she got everyone’s attention.
“What is it Mia? Why are you so angry” Alyssa was playing all innocent and she kept on with her act of being deaf.
“Mia what is it? What has she done that made you so angry?” My teacher also wanted to know what could have made Mia lose her cool but Mia clearly wasn’t interested in the teacher’s opinion as she turned Alyssa’s bag upside down and shaken it.
“Where is it?” Mia pushed Alyssa and the teacher had to hold Mia back with a warning that she would be reported to higher authorities if she didn’t stop what she was doing.
“Miss, Alyssa is wrong here. I saw her cut Mia’s hair and put it in a transparent bag. If you search her things on the floor then I am sure you will find Mia’s hair and the scissors” I spoke in favor of Mia and Alyssa’s eyes turned red at once as she folded her fist and looked downwards, trying to keep her cool.
She continued with her deaf pretense as I bent down to search her things, scattered on the floor of the classroom.
But to my amazement I didn’t find the scissors or Mia’s hair at that.
“Have you found what you are looking for?” My teacher was quite upset with my behavior and I nodded my head as a no.
“I am going to let both of you go this time but trust me you won’t be so lucky when next you try this sort of thing” she pointed at Mia and I.
Alyssa just looked around as a tear escaped from her eye, she began to gather her things as she wiped her tears with the back of her palm before running away from class.
“You must go after her now or you will be in big trouble now both of you leave my sight!” My teacher scolded, Mia and I both ran out of the class with the period over the bell being rung.
