CHAPTER 19 Friends with the enemy

Book:Mia and Mara Published:2024-5-1

After Mia had saved Lakshmi’s life, she couldn’t even remember what actually triggered Lakshmi to start behaving that way towards her. Three days later a class was going on when Mia suddenly covered her ears with her hand.
“What? No! No” Mia kept screaming in the middle of the class. The teacher and all the students paused to look at her. The students who were sitting next to Mia stood up from their seats and moved away from her. She threw her books that were on the table to the floor.
“Mia are you okay?” Lakshmi, who was the only person that actually cared, quickly began to walk towards Mia.
“Please don’t leave me, please don’t leave me” Mia kept on screaming and broke down in tears.
“Mia no one is going to leave you okay?” Lakshmi comforted Mia. She stood over Mia and made her rest her head on her waist while Mia sat on the chair.
Surprisingly to Lakshmi, Mia wrapped her hand around her waist crying uncontrollably. Lakshmi gasped in fear but after some time she hugged Mia’s neck gently.
Everyone in class stood and watched them with their mouths open, they just couldn’t believe what was happening in front of them. Mia was actually showing emotions for the first time and the weird part is the fact that Lakshmi was the one comforting her.
Mia soon came to her senses and looked around her, she ran away from the class with Lakshmi trailing after her.
Mia went into the school bathroom to wash her face and look in the mirror. Images of what happened during their excursion began to play in her head. She slowly began to remember what happened, she was regaining her memory then she looked at her legs and was frightened by her own appearance, she was feeling them as if they weren’t real.
She looked at her necklace and her eyes widened, it was still on her neck and she was scared of it. She took it off her and threw it on the floor then moved backwards.
Lakshmi flung the bathroom door open to see a scared Mia. She blinked her eyes in confusion, she couldn’t comprehend why Mia was looking so scared all of a sudden.
“Mia” Lakshmi called out, Mia who was looking down at the floor raised her head up to look at Lakshmi. She moved away from her.
“Mia, why are you looking scared now? I won’t hurt you I promise” Lakshmi moved slowly towards Mia , she stopped in her tracks when she felt like she was about to step on something. She looked down to the floor to see Mia’s necklace, she picked it up.
“Mia, why did you drop your necklace? Come I will help you put it on” Lakshmi made an attempt to hold Mia but Mia shifted away from her.
“Please believe me I won’t hurt you, I just want to help you put it on,” Lakshmi pleaded.
“I don’t want it” Mia hit the necklace and it slipped right out of Lakshmi’s hand. Lakshmi didn’t mind as she bent down to pick the necklace and opened Mia’s palm before placing it in her palm.
“It’s okay if you are mad at me and I can understand if you hate me but don’t reject what’s yours because I touched it” Lakshmi was misunderstanding the whole situation. She felt Mia was rejecting the necklace because she picked it up, she didn’t know the secret behind the necklace. Holding back her tears she left Mia to be alone in the bathroom.
Mia had made up her mind to flush the necklace down the sink. She dropped it in the sink that was just below the mirror and was going to turn on the water when the necklace started floating in the air. It was glowing again and this time Mia made an attempt to run away but then the doors were shut, she couldn’t get out. She was stuck in the bathroom.
Then the necklace floated behind her and began to push her towards the mirror she was standing in front of earlier.
She had no choice but to do what it wanted
“Mia” she heard someone call out her name.
She looked around but she didn’t see anyone, she didn’t know why but the voice sounded very familiar. It was as if she had heard the voice from someone very close to her before and it only made her more curious as to find out where the voice was coming from.
“Mia I’m here” she heard again and her eyes began to scan the room until it finally settled to look in front of the mirror.
“You” she gasped in amazement. She couldn’t believe her eyes.
“You left.. mum.. she.. how?” Mia was breathing heavily and she just couldn’t bring herself to make a complete sentence. She couldn’t find the words that were suitable to qualify the situation that she was in.
“Yes Mia, I am here. Your dad is here but I won’t stay long” Arthur voice spoke to her, she could see his reflection in the mirror but when she turned around she didn’t see him.
“Please don’t be afraid Mia. I am here for you, anytime you feel like talking to someone just place your necklace in front of a mirror or water or any other material that can show you a reflection. When you do this please call out to me and I will be in front of you even if I won’t last for 5 minutes. And if I don’t answer you which I’m sure I won’t answer you most times please be strong and know that I will always be with you” Arthur looked at his daughter and instructed Mia whose tears just couldn’t stop flowing.
“Where is mum?” Mia tried to get a hold of herself.
“That is a story for another day. But just know that she is alive and you will have to fulfill your destiny when the time comes. I love you my child” Arthur’s reflection disappeared. Mia put on the necklace and tried calling out to her father, she had so many questions to ask him. He couldn’t just leave now, she wasn’t done.
But he didn’t answer her, she couldn’t stop crying her eyes out and wished she could go back in time to be with her parents, she wished that those people never took her parents from her in the first place. Although back then she had little or no emotions, she just wished that things would go back to the way they were before.
She wanted her mum to feed her again and her dad to drive her to school, even if they wouldn’t be able to relive their luxurious lifestyle.
“Mia, Mia” Lakshmi kept on calling out to whoever was lying unconscious on the floor. She sprinkled water on her face to see if she would wake up, which she did.
“What happened?” Mia looked around to find herself on the bathroom floor with Lakshmi using her hand to support her head while she laid on the floor. Was it a dream? Did she really see her father?. She touched her neck just to feel her necklace and thankfully it was still on her neck.
“What happened to you? Why did you pass out?” Lakshmi was asking Mia who didn’t have the answers herself.
“Common now, you have to get up. You have missed 3 periods already” Lakshmi was trying to help Mia stand on her feet.
“Three periods?” Mia was stunned.
“Yes three, you will miss the 4th one if you don’t stand up now” Lakshmi informed Mia who was now a little bit aware of her surroundings. She picked herself up and went into class. No one wanted to sit close to her even the teacher was careful not to walk towards where she was seated.
Mia noticed the stigmatization and gave a small smile as she scoffed, trying to hide her pain, she was used to it and she was sure that no one would even want to hear her name after what happened in class before she ran to the bathroom. Lakshmi stood up from her seat which was three seats behind Mia and sat next to Mia.
“Now, we are going to be sitting together like this from now on. It is going to be so fun” Lakshmi was happy that she was sitting next to Mia.
On the other hand, Mia couldn’t tell if this was a trick Lakshmi was going to use to start bullying her again.
“Why Are you sitting close to Lakshmi? She is insane” one of Lakshmi’s friends asked her when the teacher had left the class.
“You’re the one that is insane” Lakshmi fired back. Mia turned to look at Lakshmi who just defended her for the first time ever since they met.
“Seriously? Now you are defending her? Have you also gone insane?” Lakshmi’s friend giggled and made a mockery of her.
“Bella trust me if you don’t shut that mouth of yours I will stand up from this chair and help you shut it. Is that clear?” Lakshmi gave Bella a stern look and Bella wouldn’t even dare to go against her, she knew what Lakshmi was capable of doing to her if she took her mockery any further, She could only grumble.
Lakshmi stood up from her chair and went in front of the whole class.
“Now let this serve as a warning to everyone here. If I see anyone making a mockery of Mia or even troubling her in the slightest way then that person would be more than sorry. Is that clear?” Lakshmi slammed her hand on the teachers table that was in front of them.
Her words alone made them have goosebumps. Lakshmi was the kind of person that would send people after you if she had enough of you and wasn’t able to get you herself, she did it once and no one wanted to fall a victim to her. They immediately left the class, more like they ran out of the class.
