Alexander’s POV
I was shaking like a leaf with my phone in my hand, worried.
“Do it!” Ghost mused. “You have nothing to lose!”
“It’s-”
“No, it is!” Ghost cut me off. “Just phone the girl!”
My heart was racing a thousand miles per hour, making me sweat under my collar-this felt worse than asking Emily to dance!
“Should I take charge?” Ghost suggested.
“N-no-no!” I muttered, trying to push my nerves aside.
I took a long and deep breath, closing my eyes and forcing my racing heart to calm.
“Feeling better?” Ghost asked, concerned.
“Sure,” I said, looking at the phone in my hand.
I quickly dialed Mila’s number, waiting for it to ring.
“Mila’s phone,” a husky voice answered after the second ring.
I paused, startled, to hear him answering the phone.
What do I do now?
“What’s Mila’s name again?”
It was on the tip of my tongue, but I just couldn’t remember. I remember him coming from a neighborhood pack.
“James?” Ghost asked.
“No, it is not that!” I said.
“Jeremy? James? Max?” Ghost said.
“No. No. No. Stop throwing random names at me,” I growled.
“Hello? Can you hear me?” The voice asked.
“Sorry for trying to help you!” Ghost whimpered.
“It’s Jax,” Ghost yapped. “I’m sure of that!”
“Yes! That’s right!” I sighed.
“If this is some kind of prank,” Jax growled over the phone.
“Evening Jax,” I said, cutting him off. “May I speak to Mila?”
“Can I ask who’s calling?” Jax asked.
“It’s Alpha Black,” I said, and the phone went silent.
Did he drop the call?
I looked at my cellphone, seeing the timer still running.
“I guess he went to call Mila.” I shrugged.
“Maybe,” Ghost said. “How much do you know about Jax?”
“Not much,” I admitted.
“Take the damn phone, Mila!” I could hear Jax’s muffled voice. “It might be important!”
“I have nothing to say to him!” Mila growled. “He is an arrogant bastard!”
“I think it was a bad idea to call her,” I said, feeling my mouth run dry.
“At least we know what she thinks of you!” Ghost sneakers. “When she takes the call, apologize to her first, then tell her why you called.”
I nodded-that’s if she takes the phone.
The sound of kids’ laughter echoed in the background, and my heart pinched thinking of Lex.
Emily didn’t go into detail about Lex, and I was burning to find out about him.
“Maybe something happened to Parker,” Jax insisted, his tone even and calm. “Talk to him and find out what he wants. He is an Alpha, Mila. He wouldn’t just randomly call you. This must be important!”
“Fine!” Mila fiercely growled, and I could hear Jax handing the phone to her.
“Alpha Black,” Mila barked. “What can I do for you?”
“Here’s your chance!” Ghost said.
“Mila,” I said, swallowing the lump in my throat. “I called to apologize for my bad behavior.”
Mila suddenly started coughing, sounding as if she was choking on something.
“You caught her off guard,” Ghost said, smiling. It seemed like his plan was about to go south.
“Are you alright?” I asked, concerned. That wasn’t the reaction I was hoping for.
“Yeah, I’m fine!” Mila said, between coughing.
It took her a few seconds to get her coughing under control before she could speak.
“So tell me, Alpha Black,” Mila said, her tone hard and bitter. “What bad behavior are you referring to?”
“You know what I mean,” I said. “I didn’t mean to threaten you. It was just that I missed Emily so much. You of all people should know how it is when your fated mate is away from home.”
Mila kept quiet for a moment before she sighed.
I guess she knew exactly how it felt. Emily told me Jax was visiting the other packs in her absence, and sometimes he was gone for days.
“So would you accept my apology?” I said, hoping she would.
“Yes, fine,” she said, and I imagined her rolling her eyes at me.
“Thank you,” I said. “I don’t like having quarrels with my mate’s best friend.”
“Is there anything else, Alpha?” Emily asked, her tone softer. “I would like to return to attend to the kids.”
I was burning to ask her about Lex, but I knew it would make things complicated.
“Uhm, in fact, I have a favor to ask you,” I said, crossing my fingers.
“As long as it doesn’t involve threatening me or any of my loved ones,” she said. “You are welcome to ask.”
“I promise it’s nothing like that!” I said, feeling my heart start to race again.
“Very well, then go ahead and ask,” she said.
I sighed, relieved.
Here goes nothing!
“I was wondering if you could give me some pointers,” I said.
“Pointers to what exactly?” She asked.
“Emily,” I muttered, embarrassed.
“Is Em okay?” She asked, her voice laced with concern. “Tell me she is okay!”
“Emily is fine,” I said quickly. “She struggled with her heat, but all went down fine.”
“Heat?” Mila gasped. I guess Emily didn’t tell her why she hadn’t returned to White Moon yet. “And you only tell me now!”
“Emily is fine,” I repeated. “I promise-I just need to get some intel about Emily’s likes and dislikes. Her favorite foods, her favorite pastime, etc.”
Emily chuckled.
“Alpha,” she said with a teasing tone. “You sure sound nervous, but because you are my best friend’s mate, I will consider helping you.”
“Thank you,” I said. “You have no idea what it means to me.”
“Don’t thank me yet,” she said. “Emily changes her mind like a woman changes clothes. She would like blue today and yellow tomorrow.”
“Oh, Goddess,” I said, worried. “How will I manage that?”
“Just check her mood,” Mila said, chuckling.
Man, this is going to be harder than I hoped.
“I need to go; the kids need me,” Mila said. “Send me a message, and I will reply.”
“Thank you,” I said, hearing her cut the call.
I released a breath I didn’t know I was holding and stood with the phone in my hands, looking out the window for a minute or two, feeling the adrenaline pumping through my veins.
A smile rose on my lips, and an uncontrollable giggle bubbled up in me.
“Laugh all you want!” Ghost tittered. “You were scared sh*tless to ask Mila for help!”
“I know,” I said. “Now it seems silly!”
My smile broadened, thinking of all the possibilities.
If everything goes as planned and Mila keeps her word, I will now be able to woo my mate in every given way.
Now I just have to decide what to do first-
