Quitting

Book:The Mafia’s Secretary Published:2024-6-4

Theressa walked to her desk, her heavy shoulders in the air as she tried feigning normalcy in her actions.
Her gaze roamed around in search of Anne. Her desk was empty, she would normally leave her bag on the desk even though she was out of the block for a smoke. However, none of her belongings were on the desk.
Theressa awaited her team leader’s scolding for missing a day of work but she got none. He was too busy to even exit his office.
Theressa got to work, finishing all the tasks that were given to her before the weekend.
Work seemed boring without Anne, her vibrant presence, sassy talks and gossip kind of made Theressa’s stay in the unit bearable but now Anne is absent from work.
Honestly, Theressa was being careful with Anne, she had a friend who backstabbed her once and making the same mistake may scar her for life and so she always drew a line between herself and Anne. An invisible line that no one can cross, neither her nor Anne. But she had taken a step passed that line asking Anne for advice concerning Marcelo and herself.
Something clicked, something she didn’t want to keep in her mind till it’s confirmed, something she didn’t want to believe… “Anne and Joe, what if they are related? What if she had introduced Joe to me intentionally” Thersssa shook her head trying to get the thought off her head. She will find out in due time. Nothing ever stays in the dark for long besides her deal with Marcelo ends today and she had no reason to care for him.
Theressa didn’t find it surprising how no one talked about the attack from the engagement party. A colleague of hers had brought it up but from what he said Theressa had sensed a setup.
Marcelo and the police? He had called the police officers for help? Theressa almost scoffed.
Apparently, she wasn’t the only one that was sent out of the hall, the rest were all sent out, the same time with Theressa. But Theressa had let her hopes up, she had let her mind waver to Marcelo caring for her “So stupid” she said to herself.
The work hours were almost over and Theressa was staring at the brown slim envelope, where her letter of resignation lay. She would have wanted at least the person she was the closest to in the company to know but Anne was absent from work and so Theressa made her way to her team leader’s office leaving a soft knock on the glass-wooden door, drawing the forty year old man seated, his eyes focused on the paper work on his desk.
“Be quick” Mr Drego stated, not bothering to lift his gaze to Theressa.
It wasn’t new to Theressa, Mr Drego had a touch of nonchalant when it cam cae to to his members, he cared little abut their weel-beig, one of the reaosons Theressa made no move to ask him about Anne.
“I’m done with all the tasks assigned to me” Theressa began, her heart heavy as she took in a breath.
‘And I’m resigning”
Now, this caught Mr Drego’s attention as he shifted his gaze to Theressa, cocking a brow, as if Theressa’s words were a joke to him.
“Get back to work” Mr Drego stated, dismissing her statement and shifting his attention back to his paperwork. But Theressa had made a decision she had promised herself to quit today and so ignoring Mr Drego’s words, she walked towards his desk placing the envelope on his desk.
“What do you think you are doing?” The cold voice reverberated in her ears, his cold tone caused goosebumps to arise on her skin as she shivered.
Both Mr Drego and Theressa’s attention was drawn to the enimatic figure that stood at the door.
Annoyance contouring his features as he stared daggers at Theressa.
Drego had splitted his lips to speak, probably to defend himself that he had nothing to do with Theressa’s resignation but Marcelo had paid him no attention as he picked up the brown envelope and gripped Theressa’s wrist, yanking out of the office.
His grip was so tight, Theressa could feel her wrist bones crushing, her blood flow had paused, her palm shut out of blood. But Theressa made no complaint, made no move to struggle out of Marcelo’s hold, made no attempt to rebel. She followed him like a zombie, unable to feel, unable to cry, unable to be angry at him.
Her back hit the leather couch with a loud thud, her eyes squeezed trying not to wince out loud in pain.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Marcelo wasn’t raising his voice, he barely did. But Theressa could sense the disbelief and disappointment mixed in his tone.
Therssa said nothing, she uttered no word as she stood from the couch, taking one breath at a time, if she loses herself, she would breakdown, if she loses the composure she had been holding since she walked into the company building, her walls will crumble and she will fall so hard and give way for Marcelo, and she would get hurt again.
“I’m sorry I didn’t inform you, it was an impromptu decision” Theressa stated, her voice wavering as her gaze was everywhere aside staring at Marcelo.
Marcelo scoffed, taking his time to scan Theressa’s expression, taking slow steps towards Theressa, and Theressa hated the situation she was in, she couldn’t let Marcelo near her, she couldn’t let Marcelo touch her, she can’t, she can’t give in.
“I made sure to be done with all the tasks given to me” Theressa stated as she attempted to walk passed Marcelo, heading for the door but within a blink of her eyes she was pulled back, her back hitting the wall while Marcelo stood before her. His hands on either side of Theressa.
Theressa had met with his gaze, his Jaw was tight, as his gaze narrowed slightly. Marcelo was close, so close, so close. She couldn’t breath, her chest squeezed. She wanted No. She needed to be out of here, to be out of Marcelo’s hold.
His hand caressed her cheeks, shiver runs up her spine, her heart beating so fast, so normal whenever Marcelo came close to her.
“Don’t lean, don’t lean to his touch” A voice lingered at the back of her head, Her hands balled into a fist as Marcelo was leaning closer, his eyes on her lips and Theressa could tell what would happen next if she doesn’t move away, if she doesn’t reject him.
“Our contract has been terminated sir. It’s normal I-”
It was too late.
Marcelo had smashed his lips to hers and Theressa couldn’t pull away, couldn’t stop the butterflies from flying around within her insides as their lips moved together as Marcelo led her back to the couch, as Marcelo deepened the kiss.
Her whole heart bubbled with excitement, Marcelo has her wrapped around his fingers. She hated to admit it but that was the reality of it.
Theressa was addicted to him. But this marks the end of any sort of their ill fated relationship. She isn’t going to be tossed around by Marcelo anymore, this would be the last, the last moment with him, the last moment she let her flesh give in, the last time she choose to think with her heart.
