A few hours earlier.
After a small argument with Darwin, Veronica finally let her husband go this morning. Peeking from behind the bedroom window, she could see her husband down there, loading golf equipment into the car. It can be guessed that Darwin probably wanted to go play golf with his cousin or business associates.
Feeling lazy and not wanting to bother about what her husband had said or done earlier, Veronica decided to crawl back into bed. For some reason, over the past few days, she had been feeling very lazy and unmotivated to do anything. That’s why, instead of taking a shower or leaving the room, Veronica chose to get back under the covers and soon fell asleep again.
As far as Veronica could remember, she only woke up around one in the afternoon. That was because Renata accidentally woke her up to remind her to have lunch.
“Mrs. Veronica didn’t have breakfast this morning. If you don’t have lunch either, Mr. Darwin might get angry,” Renata complained while helping tidy up the bed. Meanwhile, Veronica herself seemed to be heading towards the walk-in closet to choose her outfit for after her shower.
“Darwin won’t get angry. He’s sulking with me,” Veronica confessed honestly. Besides, it seemed like Renata knew what was going on between her and Darwin right now, and Veronica didn’t try to hide it.
“I’ve noticed, ma’am,” Renata replied with a smile. “I can tell from his behavior. Mr. Darwin never really gives long messages.”
“Yeah,” Veronica nodded. “Usually, if there’s something, he’ll say it directly. He’s never used to sending messages like he has been for the past few days.”
Renata nodded. She, who had long been devoted to Darwin and even knew her employer’s behavior inside and out, could only laugh knowingly.
“Most likely, he’ll be back to normal tomorrow as usual. Mr. Darwin is just pretending to be nonchalant. But, he always asks if you’ve eaten yet. Has this been done, has that been done?”
Veronica chuckled as she watched her husband’s favorite household assistant grumble. In their home, Renata was the one who dared to answer back and even scolded Darwin without hesitation. Strangely, her husband had never been angry with her; instead, he seemed respectful of his assistant.
“Well, you go ahead and continue tidying up. I’m going to take a shower first.”
“After your shower, ma’am, would you like to have lunch right away?”
Veronica nodded. Sleeping for too long had made her feel weak.
“Yes, I’m hungry. But, can I request something to be made?”
Renata nodded in response. She certainly wouldn’t refuse her employer’s request.
“What would you like me to make, ma’am?”
“I want to have fried rice with sausages, fried chicken, and sunny-side-up eggs. And for my drink, orange juice. I don’t know why, but I’ve been craving that since last night.”
“Quite an unusual craving for fried rice at this hour. You’re not pregnant, are you?”
Laughter immediately escaped Veronica’s lips. Whether it was a craving or just a usual food preference, she had been thinking about that meal since last night.
“No way it’s a pregnancy craving.”
“Well, you never know.”
“But, it seems like I need to check because I’m already a month late.”
Renata’s eyes widened, and she even looked genuinely surprised.
“Could it be that you’re really pregnant? Would you like me to help you buy a pregnancy test?”
Veronica laughed again for a moment, then shook her head.
“No need. Fortunately, I already have some in stock. I’ll check while I’m in the shower.”
Renata nodded enthusiastically. While Veronica headed to the bathroom, Renata hurried to the kitchen to prepare the lunch menu her employer had requested earlier.
Forty minutes later, Veronica was seen coming down to the dining room. The meal she had asked for was laid out perfectly on the table, complete with orange juice just as she wished.
“Come on, let’s eat quickly, ma’am, so it doesn’t get cold.”
Veronica nodded, picked up her fork, and started to enjoy her lunch. Meanwhile, Renata still seemed content standing beside her.
“How is it? Does it meet your expectations?”
“It’s delicious. It’s exactly what I had in mind. Thank you so much for fulfilling the pregnant lady’s request.”
“You’re welcome,” Renata replied. Then, she fell silent for a moment, as if realizing something she had just heard.
“Wait… is Mrs. Veronica really-”
“Yes,” Veronica nodded, smiling. “I checked, and the result is positive.”
“Oh my goodness,” Renata exclaimed with a joyful expression. She was enthusiastic about the good news Veronica had just shared. “Congratulations, ma’am. I’ll pray for your health until the time of delivery. If you need anything or want to eat anything, just let me know. I’ll do my best.”
After a brief conversation with Renata, Veronica continued with her meal. Once finished, she eagerly reached for her phone, intending to share this good news with Darwin.
However, after making repeated calls, her husband did not respond. She thought he might be busy playing golf and not realizing she was trying to reach him.
A few minutes later, before returning to her room, Veronica’s phone rang. She thought it might be Darwin, but to her surprise, it was Deasy’s name displayed on the screen.
“Yeah, what’s up, Des?”
“Are you still going to Sean’s event?”
Veronica sighed softly. She had almost forgotten that she had a scheduled invitation from Sean today. She was sure she would have to go alone since Darwin had declined her invitation yesterday.
“So, I’ll go with the driver later.”
“Doesn’t Darwin want to accompany you?” inquired Deasy from the other side.
“He has a golf game planned with his cousin and some business associates,” Veronica explained. If she mentioned that her husband had refused to accompany her, Deasy would surely launch into a lengthy lecture.
“Why don’t you come with me then? I’ll pick you up around 4 pm. Be ready.”
“Alright. Just let me know when you’re on your way.”
An hour after Deasy’s call, Veronica decided to prepare herself. She chose her outfit, applied makeup, and waited for her friend to come pick her up.
Just as promised, Deasy arrived at Veronica’s house around half past four. They then drove together in Deasy’s car.
Luckily, during the journey to the event location, the streets were clear, and there was no usual traffic congestion. However, before they reached their destination, unexpectedly, Deasy’s car had a tire blowout and rolled over, hitting the road barrier.
Unfortunately, Deasy’s condition appeared to be severe. After being rushed to the hospital and receiving medical treatment, it was revealed that she was suffering from serious bleeding and needed a large amount of blood transfusion. Veronica herself only had minor scrapes and bruises on various parts of her body.
