Chapter 109

Veronica blinked her eyes for a moment. When her consciousness fully gathered, she turned to the side and didn’t find Darwin lying beside her.
For a moment, Veronica fell silent. With a furrowed brow, shortly after, she remembered Darwin’s question from the previous night when he had left the room. Veronica thought maybe her husband had spent some time resting in the office and hadn’t returned.
Glancing briefly at the digital clock on the nightstand, it showed that it was only six in the morning. Veronica quickly got up to head to the bathroom. After finishing her morning routine and applying minimal makeup, Veronica hurriedly made her way to the dining room. She thought this might be her chance to see her husband.
However, Veronica’s hope faded. Upon entering the dining room, once again, she didn’t find Darwin there. Perhaps he had an early work schedule or was intentionally avoiding her.
“Mr. Darwin left early, Mrs. Veronica,” Renata said as she poured milk into a glass, which she then handed to Veronica. “He left a message, saying that you should have breakfast before heading to work.”
Veronica sighed. It seemed that last night’s drama continued into the morning.
“He said he’s not angry. But why sulking until this morning?” Veronica muttered to herself. “If he wanted me to have breakfast, he should have told me directly,” Veronica grumbled this time in a frustrated tone, then took a sip of her milk.
“It seems like he was in a hurry. Earlier, I saw Mr. Randy picking him up.”
“So, he didn’t bring his own car?”
Renata shook her head.
“No. Mr. Darwin’s car is still in front. He said you should just ride with Mr. Randy. Maybe he wants to give you a ride home after work.”
Veronica nodded. She hoped that what Renata said was entirely true. Hopefully, her husband would ride with her when she returned from work. It was funny; they had only been together for a few days, and now they were not speaking to each other.
Veronica admitted that she might have gone too far, but at least she had been honest and had apologized repeatedly to her husband. How long would Darwin stay angry with her?
Ignoring what Renata had just said, Veronica continued to enjoy her breakfast first. Once satisfied, she rushed to the office.
Veronica spent the first two hours finishing up her remaining work. While engrossed in copying the reports, Deasy suddenly approached her room. Her friend entered with a box of cakes, the source of which was unknown.
“Are you busy? Hope I’m not interrupting,” Deasy asked casually. Without waiting for an invitation, she placed the box of cakes she had brought and sat right in front of Veronica.
“See for yourself. Do you think I’m busy or not?” Veronica replied without shifting her attention.
“I don’t really care, to be honest. Whether you’re busy or not, I just wanted to drop by and chat with you,” Deasy replied with a laugh. “By the way, you received a cake delivery from Sean.”
Veronica stopped her hands in motion, looked up, and then gazed at Deasy.
“A cake delivery?”
“Yeah,” Deasy nodded. “Specifically for you, he sent a red velvet cake. It’s your favorite, isn’t it?”
Veronica nodded in agreement. Among all the cakes, she did have a strong liking for red velvet, and Sean knew that well. But she was a little confused as to why her ex-boyfriend was suddenly sending her a cake like this.
“What’s Sean up to, sending cakes and all? Regardless, there’s no way I can reconnect with him. I’ve decided to stay with Darwin no matter what.”
Deasy raised an eyebrow, looking at Veronica with a mocking smile, then let out a sarcastic chuckle.
“Don’t be too confident, Veronica Ashborne. Sean didn’t just send cakes to you. He sent them to almost all the executives and division heads at Vortex Group. Even Mr. Damian got his share.”
This time, Veronica’s brow furrowed. Of course, she was even more curious now. What was the purpose behind Sean distributing cakes to almost all the important people at Vortex Group?
“It’s a kind of gift accompanied by an invitation,” Deasy explained, then handed over a brown envelope containing an official invitation.
“What’s this invitation?” Veronica asked as she opened the envelope.
“It’s an invitation to a farewell event. After the inauguration, Sean will be heading to China soon. Once his project is completed, he’ll be stationed in Nevada. So, he took the time to organize a farewell for all of us.”
Veronica finally understood. Unbeknownst to her, after briefly reuniting and working together, she and Sean would be separated again for a long time. In her heart, Veronica sincerely prayed that her ex-boyfriend would find a better partner in his new place.
“Because this is the last chance…” Deasy continued. “I hope you come, Ve. Don’t worry, I won’t force you to stay married to Sean. I’ve tried to set you two up, but you won’t get back together.”
Veronica laughed. Up to this point, she sometimes wondered why her friend had tried so hard to reunite her with Sean. Instead, why didn’t Deasy pursue a relationship with him herself?
“Instead of pushing me to get back with Sean, why don’t you just date him yourself? Both of you are single, right? Rather than being matched with a guy you don’t know, it’s better to be with Sean, whose background and personality you’re familiar with.”
Deasy sighed lazily. For some reason, she hadn’t thought about being in a relationship or starting a family until now. Being used to a free and work-focused life made her reluctant to seek a partner.
“Marriage is easy, Ve. I’m just too lazy to meet a husband who turns out to be a jerk like Darwin.”
“Oh!” Veronica raised her eyebrows. She didn’t like how her husband was being used as a bad example by her friend. “Why bring up Darwin?”
“Well, I’m still annoyed by your husband’s past behavior. Why does the world have to have guys like him who are rough and ungrateful? Plus, you forgave him so easily. Now you’re back together.”
Veronica just laughed. She wasn’t offended by what Deasy said.
“Don’t hate him too much, Des. You might owe him a favor or need help from Darwin in the future.”
Deasy gave a lazy look. She even tapped her fingers on the table repeatedly while speaking.
“Eww, no thanks. I don’t want to owe your husband anything. I’m too lazy for that.”
Shortly after, Deasy’s phone rang. After receiving the call for a moment, she said goodbye to Veronica. Perhaps there was work that needed her immediate attention.
“Well, I have to head back now. Don’t forget to come tomorrow. If your husband doesn’t want to accompany you, just contact me, and we’ll go together.”
Veronica nodded, smiled, and gave a thumbs-up as a sign that she agreed with Deasy’s suggestion.
After Deasy left, Veronica checked the time on her wrist. Believing it was time for lunch, she intended to visit Darwin. She thought about inviting her husband to have lunch with her. Although she was unsure if Darwin would agree, there was no harm in trying.
