When everything calmed down, I still stood dazed at the stairs. The recent scene seemed like a nightmare.
However, Cameron once again informed me that this was just the beginning of the nightmare…
At night, after helping Carter with his leg massage and assisting him to bed, I couldn’t fall sleep.
I got up, quietly walked down to the living room, had a glass of water, and then sat on the sofa in a daze.
I suddenly realized that the ring was still on my finger. A shock ran through me as images of Stella’s suicide and Anne’s tragic death flashed before my eyes…
I was breathing heavily, I tried to take off the ring. However, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get it off. Just as I was thinking of slipping into the bathroom to apply some soap, a force suddenly pressed on my shoulder, pushing me back onto the sofa.
Startled, I saw a pair of wolf-like eyes in the dim light.
“Cameron?” I whispered, “What… what are you doing? Let go of me!”
His body pressed against mine. One hand pinned me down while the other deftly lifted my nightdress and slid inside…
“No!” I nearly cried out. “Cameron, this is the living room, stop it!”
“Why should I bother with time and place when I want to have you?” Cameron sneered, “Out here in the middle of the night, staring into space… Why? You slept with Carter?”
“We haven’t done anything!” Saying this felt strange, as if I were explaining something to him.
“Even if you wanted to, you couldn’t!” He laughed sinisterly, leaning over to bite me hard on the chest. “Carter can’t satisfy you, you slut!”
“Ah…” I winced in pain, biting down hard on my lip before I could cry out.
In that moment, my heart was filled with hatred.
Cameron, whom does he think he is, to humiliate and scorn me like this? For over a decade, I’ve chosen to endure whatever he did to me. But now, I’m married. I’m his brother’s wife. What right does he have to treat me like this?
I struggled and broke free from his grasp, delivering a loud slap across his face.
At first, he was momentarily stunned by my retaliation, but then he resorted to even more violent means to attack me.
As we struggled, he suddenly froze, a cold glint flickering in his eyes. Following his gaze, I noticed he was staring intently at the ring on my finger.
“Mom’s ring…” he looked at me, “How did you get it?”
My heart nearly leaped out of my throat.
“She… she gave it to me.”
“This was her favorite piece of jewelry, she didn’t give it to Anne, and she gave it to you?”
Cameron’s eyes blazed with resentment…
“I didn’t lie. She gave it to me!” I defended myself.
Cameron paused, then he sneered, “Just because of this, she fell into depression again and suicide? Is that it?”
“Laura…” He leaned in close, his voice filled with harsh curses, “You’re the damn jinx of our Lynch Family! My sister wouldn’t have died and my mom wouldn’t have gotten sick if it weren’t for you! ”
“Cameron, you can’t blame all these things on me…”
“Others might be deceived by you, but I can still see through your true colors!” He gritted his teeth, grabbing my hair forcefully, “Laura, I’ve been investigating what happened back then… I’ll soon uncover the truth and expose your secrets.”
I stared at him in shock, my throat tight as a chill ran down my spine.
He had been investigating… If he truly discovers everything, my identity will be exposed, and the secrets I’ve tried to keep will be revealed.
