Jake’s POV
“We will remain friends in this pack as long as you obey the three first and basic rules. One: Don’t invite anyone to the pack. Two: Don’t reveal the secret of the pack, not the method if initiating members, not the name of the pack you belong to, not the name of your Alpha or the number of wolves present in the pack. Three: Never ever for any reason open your chest to anyone, lady or guy. Always be on a singlet on a shirt as the mark of the pack will be stamped to your chest as it was done to everyone here. If anyone sees the mark, as long as such is a werewolf, he can easily track us down and good for the pack, we will know how the tracker got to us. From whom and such will be found and killed. You can see over there the dungeon we created. We’d throw your carcass there and rogues can pass through the back of this room to chop off the bodies and their names will be blotted out from the book.” He instructs.
“Understood, Alpha. What’s my role for the pack? How do I interact? Do I not get close to anyone else? Am I bound from having a mate?” I ask.
“You’re not bound for having a mate but you’re bound from revealing your chest to her. If she can’t have sex with you without you opening your chest, then you’re banned from having sex with her and reproducing through her. You’re allowed to fuck around until you can have a child from a female wolf.” He retorts, “any more questions?”
I gulp as I am too shocked to absorb all the information, “do you know I’m a twin?”
“I know everything about you.” He says and slowly whispers to me, “I can read your mind. I don’t want Jack, your other one, to be involved with this. In return for pledging to obey the rules and regulations, we’d grant you excess wealth, good accomodation if you’re not convenient with where you are now or whom you’re with, access to any hotels you want, and many ladies to fuck. No limit.” He says and I smile to that last freedom. I love it best.
“I totally understand. Thank you. But was this opportunity granted to each wolf seated here?” I gently ask, trying to catch a point.
“No.” He replies swiftly.
“Then, why me?” I ask, feeling suspicious.
“Because you’re the BETA for the pack, moving forward. I hereby announce JAKE ORION BLACKWOOD whose name has been imprinted on the pack name list, the list of the Decagons, as the Beta Of The Pack. Everyone must treat him with that respect. He’ll watch you all to know when you violate any of the rules. While I am not around, he’ll rule the pack and he reserves the rights to appoint some other auxiliary betas.” He says and exchanges handshake with me. I assume he likes me over others because he can hear my voice.
I clear my throat as I give my speech, “thank you all. I honestly can’t appreciate you enough but I’m grateful for this chance to be your second ruler. I hope we can have a good time together. No fight. No death. No breaking of rules.”
He leads me away from the podium as the members of the pack disperses. He guides me to the empty room where he asked me to join, initially.
“Thanks for cooperating. I’d ensure you don’t regret this.” He says and I wear a smiling expression as I extend my hands to receive the handshake he offers.
“I’ll sniff the scents of the wolves to the air and ensure you catch hold of it before someone else does. I mean those passing by.” He says as he exhales loudly.
I quickly order my wolf to catch the whiff of the scent but it claims to be swamped, as though someone else is being attended to. I almost hit myself for acting so dull, I am still in the stage of first impression and I shouldn’t fumble this time around.
It suddenly responds as I sniff the scent as some strange memories swoon into my mind and I surely understand what he’s been saying ever since. The scent he exhales looks more like manipulation. Like, how could that possibly happen and I feel the same thing he’s feeling.
“Take care and here,” he says, sighing, as he flings a book at me, “a copy of the rules. The pack name isn’t imprinted on it in case you forget it at an open place. Don’t break any. We don’t consider the calibre of power before we make judgment. You can go home. I’ll be on my way. Safe journey back home.” He says and vanishes as he rises to his feet. I assume he’s a vampire but I suddenly understand that he’s an hybrid, just like me.
I keep calming myself down as this seems too much for my mind to bear at this time. It’s sudden, frightening and threatening. I slowly creep after him to see if he’s only lurking around to know what my next move would look like, maybe I’d run away from the college or call someone to inform them about an emergency. But I don’t find him there as I now believe he can easily read my mind if I’m concerned about a thing. I shrug off the thought and drop myself to the ground. My mind is my secret. That’s where I plan whatever I’m going to say or do before saying or doing so. Now that someone can access it, I definitely must find a way to stop that, even though I will stay with him.
He can’t ask me to step down as the beta, according to the rules, the ones he didn’t read to me but handed over to me to pore over. Not until after six months, except I break the eule and nowhere in the rule states that I shouldn’t detach my mind from him.
I suddenly hear fading footsteps as I assume he’s the one just taking his leave. I don’t bother to confirm. Afterall, I didn’t say anything loudly. It all was said in my mind. I heave a sigh of relief as bleeze blows in my direction and I place my head in the direction of the window to receive more wind to bring more relief.
After thirty minutes more, say fourty, I jerk back to reverie as I’m almost drowning in my thoughts. I don’t want to remain anxious anymore. I just want to live my life as it dictates it for me. I gather myself and head home to meet Jack and pretend I didn’t do anything disloyal behind him.
