Victor was the one who called him.
As soon as Credence spoke, Victor, who was panting, said respectfully, “Mr. Scott, where are you? I have very important information that I need to tell you at once.”
Credence raised his eyebrows. “Is it about Jeremy?”
“Yes, it’s about him.”
Credence’s grip on his phone tightened. “I’m at the hospital. Call me when you’re here and I’ll send Benjamin to meet you.”
“Alright, I will be there right away.”
Victor’s reply was quick and urgent. It seemed like he had dug up and pieced together very important information.
After such a long time, they finally had a lead on the investigation on Jeremy. Credence endured the pain in his head and body as he placed his phone back on the table by the bedside. His eyes gradually turned cold.
Victor arrived soon, about half an hour after the call. He followed after Benjamin, and he looked like he had lost weight.
Though he was now thinner, he still had the strength to knock the wind out of Benjamin. He waved a few documents at Credence, his smile proud. “Mr. Scott, I’ve got something solid on Jeremy this time! It won’t let you down.”
Benjamin saw that his hair was messy and his face was still dripping with sweat. He was disheveled, but he looked delighted at the documents in his hand. Benjamin suppressed his laughter and said, “Maybe you should go clean yourself up first.”
He had been Mr. Scott’s assistant for plenty of years. Naturally, he knew that Mr. Scott was a man who had mysophobia.
This was probably also the reason why there wasn’t any other woman by Mr. Scott’s side apart from Dorothy.
“Alright, I will go and take a shower.”
Victor was a smart person, and it occurred to him that he’d been in too much of a rush to get here to pay attention to his appearance. He hurried into the washroom and spent a few minutes in there cleaning himself up. When he came out, he hurried back to Credence’s bedside and passed the documents to Credence, saying anxiously, “Mr. Scott, look. This is a newspaper from more than thirty years ago, specifically thirty-four years ago. The headline is about your father spending the night with a bar lady and leaving the presidential suite the very next day with her.”
Victor pointed at the black-and-white photo on the newspaper. “This is the photo that the reporter published at that time.”
“It’s of a couple. The man is your father, and the woman is Jeremy’s biological mother.”
As he spoke, Victor took out a few more recent photos from the folder and passed it to Credence. “Mr. Scott, these are some recent photos of Jeremy’s mother, Ysabelle Chilton. After some scrutinisation, we’ve determined that Ysabelle is in fact the woman who spent the night with your father all those years ago.”
“Back then, she worked in a bar. On the surface, it looked like she was only accompanying them for some drinks, but if the customers paid well enough, she’d spend the night with them as well.”
Benjamin stood to one side, and he trembled at this shocking piece of news.
As far as he knew, Mr. Scott’s father was deeply in love with Mr. Scott’s deceased mother.
Though Mr. Scott’s mother had died almost twenty years ago, his father had not remarried and had spent his days alone. He was now in a top hospital in Monticello undergoing treatment after falling into a vegetative state ten years ago.
Mr. Scott’s father had never hidden his love for his mother, and Mr. Scott had always been very respectful towards his father. However, Victor had dug up such a shocking piece of news at this moment. There was no way Mr. Scott could feel good about this.
Benjamin’s worried eyes involuntarily glanced towards Credence, who was silent.
As Credence listened to Victor speak, his gaze focused on a spot, and most of his face was hidden in the shadows from the lights above his head. It was hard to discern his expression.
However, his tone was no different from usual. “So you’re saying that Jeremy constantly coming after me could be because of my father?”
“That is highly likely.”
Victor’s eyes shone when it came to his favourite topic. He bravely hypothesised, “Mr. Scott, my guess is that you and Jeremy must have some kind of relationship, for example…”
“That’s enough.”
Credence cut Victor off. His eyes flashed inexplicably, then he said, “You can leave now. Benjamin will transfer the money to you later.”
Victor was taken aback, then came back to his senses. Credence didn’t want him to bring such personal matters out in the open. He nodded, then placed all the documents on the bedside table. He said politely, “Alright then. Mr. Scott, I’ll be taking my leave. Take good care of yourself, and get well soon!”
After Victor left, Credence’s sharp gaze landed on the old photo.
He did not know where Victor got it from. Apart from it turning slightly yellow, everything else was well preserved, especially the couple’s smile, it was very clear.
With just a glance, Credence could tell that the suited man in the photo was his father. The woman on his right…
Her features were cold and beautiful, her skin fair and her nose straight and tall. At first glance, she looked rather similar to Belle.
Credence frowned and carefully compared the old photo to the recent photo of Ysabelle. She’d taken good care of herself, and aside from a few wrinkles and slightly loose skin, she looked almost identical to her younger self.
Suddenly, a strange thought flashed in his mind. Leilani Chilton and Ysabelle Chilton. What was the relationship between these two?
Benjamin sat on a sofa nearby and turned his laptop off. He transferred a hefty sum to Victor, then looked up and immediately detected Credence’s odd behaviour. He quickly walked over and asked, “Mr. Scott, is anything wrong?”
A sharp light flashed in Credence’s eyes. He nodded and said, “Tell Victor to quickly find out how they’re related.”
“Yes, Mr. Scott.” Benjamin immediately agreed and left.
As he walked out, he almost ran into Dorothy, who was walking down the corridor.
Benjamin quickly steadied her. “Mrs. Scott, Mr. Scott is waiting for you.”
“Alright, I know. I will go and meet Germaine first.”
At this moment, Dorothy did not want to meet Credence. She wanted to hide in Germaine’s ward.
At her words, Benjamin didn’t insist. He just smiled and said, “Mrs. Scott, when Mr. Scott first regained his memories, he told me that he would wait for you, for you to go back to him.”
“I see! Benjamin, I’m going to see Germaine. Let’s talk about this later.”
Dorothy replied perfunctorily, then hurried into the next ward.
When she entered the ward, she closed the door lightly and waited for her racing heart to calm before walking into the room.
At first, Dorothy did not look towards the hospital bed, but when she saw the huge bulge inside the quilt and realized that it was not Germaine, but a large pillow, she was shocked.
