“Mommy!”
“Dory, what’s wrong? Doctor, please help!”
Belle’s shrill screams, along with Germaine’s shouts, were mixed together as it echoed throughout the entire ward.
It all happened so fast that Germaine even forgot she was a doctor. She was so anxious that she had no idea what to do.
However, Dorothy remained quiet. She held her daughter’s small hand tightly with her slender fingers, reluctant to loosen her grip. A sad and broken smile was painted on her drowsy face.
She was thirty-two years old. It was not as if she did not have any desires or regrets.
Over the years, she had yearned for Credence to stay by her side, for him to watch their daughter grow up.
Whenever Belle cried for her father, she would always feel like a rock had smashed into her heart.
The only thing that she had ever done wrong was falling in love with Credence. But why did the heavens want to take their revenge on Belle?
Jonathan had accompanied Credence to the hospital for his annual physical examination. When he passed through a ward with its door ajar, he heard the howls coming from inside, and occasionally, the name ‘Dorothy’ could be heard. For some unknown reason, he could not help but look inside.
The first thing he saw was Germaine moving a pale-faced unconscious girl onto a hospital bed in a flurry. Next to her was a little girl. She had curly, light brown hair and big blue eyes. She looked like a typical mixed-blood child, and she kept calling out, “Mommy, Mom-”
“Credence, wait here for a while. I’ve met an acquaintance of yours. I’ll go inside to take a look.”
After that, Jonathan rushed in and nodded to Germaine to say hello, “Dorothy, oh no! What happened to her?”
“She suddenly fainted. I don’t know the exact reason. Jonathan, your medical skills aren’t good at all. We need a professional doctor immediately.”
They were all in the same social circle, and Germaine was clear about Jonathan’s subpar abilities. She stopped him, turned around and pressed under Dorothy’s nose. She checked her eyelids and looked at her, sighing as she continued, “Dory must have tired herself out recently. She shouldn’t be facing a big problem.”
Credence stood in the hallway as he narrowed his cold eyes. Subconsciously, he turned to look at the pale-faced woman who was lying on the hospital bed.
After looking at her a few times, it seemed that she was unable to discern the disgust on his face. Thus. she smiled cheekily at him, sparking yet another bout of annoyance within him.
At that moment, she was lying on the bed, her slender body elongated under the spotlight. She became thinner and thinner, and her face was as pale as a ghost, as if she could be blown away by the wind in front of everyone in any second.
For a split second, a trace of confusion flashed across Credence’s eyes and he became reluctant to see this woman looking so haggard and weak.
Jonathan made a phone call, and some professional doctors quickly entered. They carefully checked Dorothy’s body, and they all came to a conclusion that she had depression.
“The patient is in a bad mood. She has been depressed for a long time. I can only prescribe some medicine to soothe her symptoms, but we can’t cure the root cause. Mental illnesses need to be cured by a psychologist.”
“If the patient’s condition continues to persist, her depression will worsen, and she will start to feel hopeless. She might eventually become suicidal. You must all remain wary of her condition.”
“Thank you, doctor. I will pay more attention to Dory’s feelings in the future.”
Germaine had always been rough, so it was rare for her to calm down and hold Belle in her arms, her heart as calm as tranquil waters.
Dorothy’s sudden illness must have something to do with that b*stard Credence.
Dory had always been bullied by Rosalie and the others in the Fisher family, and after that, she had gotten married to Credence for four years. In those four years, she felt more sadness than happiness, so how could she not become depressed?
She finally had a chance to give birth to Belle, but in the end, she had leukemia.
All the sadness and bitter feelings in her heart had pressed down on her thin shoulders so hard that they almost broke her down.
Depression? Suicidal?
Jonathan was almost shocked to death. He could not help but look at the initiator who was standing not far away, with an ice-cold face, “Credence, doesn’t your conscience hurt seeing Dorothy in this state?”
“What does her life or death have anything to do with me?”
After being rebuked by Jonathan for some strange reason, Credence suddenly felt flustered and tired. He immediately answered him without hesitation. After that, he had an absurd feeling that he seemed to have said something wrong.
Jonathan shrugged helplessly. He looked at the man’s frigid face, not daring to say anything.
“Keep losing your memories, keep being stubborn. Sooner or later, you’ll cry!” Jonathan thought to himself.
Germaine felt unhappy after hearing Credence’s words. She walked out of the ward with a gloomy face. She could not help but kick the door with a bang. She stared at the heartless man before her with her scarlet eyes and shouted, “Credence, you’ve done a lot of bad things to her to the point where she has no one to rely on to raise her child. Now, you still have the face to stand here and make sarcastic remarks about her. F*ck, are you even a human or not?”
“Me, hurting her?”
Credence sneered coldly, and threw away the cigarette butt in his hand. His voice was deep and indifferent as he continued, “Although I am truly not a good person, I’m quite the gentleman myself, and I would never harm a woman.”
“All of you are telling me that we used to be married, and our marriage lasted four years. How could I have let her down? From what I remember, she cheated on me during our marriage, and she got pregnant with another man’s child. She’s just a disloyal woman, so what’s the point of keeping her? What’s the point in not divorcing her as soon as possible?”
“You’re speaking nonsense. She’s not that kind of woman at all,” Germaine retorted. She was on the verge of going crazy from anger. She was panting heavily and wanted nothing more than to stomp Credence to death with her high heels. “Credence, let me tell you something. Belle isn’t another man’s child. She’s…”
“Mister, you’re so handsome. I think I’ve seen you from somewhere before.”
All of a sudden, a delicate child’s voice interrupted Germaine from telling the truth.
Belle raised her head excitedly from Germaine’s arms and stared at Credence’s familiar face. She opened her mouth and said. “Ah, I remember you. Mommy and I met you at the airport. Mister, you are the most handsome man I have ever seen and you are seven times more handsome than my godfather. No, ten times more handsome.”
Credence suddenly lowered his head and looked into the little girl’s clear azure eyes. The darkness at the bottom of his eyes silently dissipated.
She wore a pink dress, and her pale arms and legs could be seen. Her jawline was beautiful and she was an incredibly adorable child.
Upon meeting the little girl who was even lovelier than Sandy, Credence’s cold, hard heart softened. Just as he was about to speak, Jonathan squeezed his way forwards and interrupted her with a smile, “Hey, little girl, why don’t you tell this handsome mister who your godfather is?”
